About this project
"We’re all made here"
Wonderland is an experimental short film about a young woman struggling to decipher what is real and what is make believe. On her journey to find answers she discovers a parallel world out of the ordinary… or is it?
"Who Are You?"
Samantha Sciotti, the director of “Wonderland,” grew up watching Disney's animated films. Her dreams began while on a family vacation to Disney World. While visiting the Hollywood Studios theme park, Samantha's grandmother brought her through The Magic of Disney Animation. She was hooked the moment Walter Cronkite explained the animation process to Robin Williams.
Soon after her visit to Disney World, Samantha discovered a new art form while watching Tim Burton's, A Nightmare Before Christmas. Samantha was fascinated with bringing characters to life using stop motion. She loved that the characters where actually tangible as it is every child's dream to bring their toys to life.
"Curiouser and Curiouser"
While studying animation at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Samantha met Emily Johnson, the writer of "Wonderland." They found that they shared the same passion for their work as well as the story of Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass. They love Alice's dark, yet innocent, story and began a collaboration to retell this story as they imagined it. This project took somewhat of a backseat as they learned to develop their talents and worked on their required projects with the intention to revisit "Wonderland," but graduation came all too soon.
Years later, the two remained close friends and decided it was time to revisit “Wonderland.” Through their art they feel that they can make anything happen, there are no limits, and it's only as real or as make-believe as you perceive it to be.
"Adventures first… explanations take such a dreadful time"
This film is loosely based on Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass. As the story unfolds, you will find a girl who uses her subconscious to deal with her problems in reality. By using a mixture of live action footage and stop motion animation, the film creates an illusion of reality. However, it is up to you, the viewer, to decide where fiction and reality merge.
What I love about Alice is that she captures the true essence of childhood and proves that our imaginations can take us any where at any time. The responsibilities of adult life have not tainted us in our visions.
The team hopes this film will inspire people to discover their inner child and allow the viewer to be transported into another world – a world of their own little wonderland.
"Oh me! Oh my! I’m late, I’m late, I’m late!"
We are expecting to finish this 10-minute film within a year. We will film the live action footage early this fall, while the animation team works on finalizing puppets and set designs.
We anticipate three days of filming for the live action segments of the film. Once that is complete, the team will begin building sets and puppets for the stop motion portion of the film. Animation is scheduled to begin Spring 2013 with a goal of post-production next fall.
As a contributor to this lengthy process, you will receive updates on the film’s progress, allowing you a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a short film.
"Time is gold"
Unfortunately like everything in life, this project costs money. As young up and comers, we are in need of your support to make a go of this project. All the money raised from Kickstarter will go towards purchasing the supplies needed to bring this film to life. That includes production supplies, equipment, location permits and a lengthy list of "must haves" to create armatures, faces, costumes, miniature sets, etc. Your investment will ensure that this film gets completed. Together, we will take creative risks and deliver a unique vision.
"Read the directions and directly you will be directed in the right direction"
How does this work? A flat rate contribution of $10 will get you a digital download of the finished film as well as access to a password-protected blog site with updates and behind the scenes footage of the production. All financial backers will be the first to receive a copy of the completed film in the available format of their choice dependent on the contribution's reward level.
We have a lot of other wonderful things for everyone that contributes above $10. Check out the list of fun rewards over on the right-hand side of the screen.
