Hi, my name is David Pentland, I am an artist, and for the last 20 years I have specialized in painting various military subjects.
In September 1916 the first tanks appeared on the western front, and to mark this centenary I have been working on a book tracing the history of this unique vehicle through my paintings and drawings.
I have structured the book to cover early design concepts, and the developments through the two world wars and the postwar era. Each image describes a specific battle or engagement, and has been thoroughly researched to be as accurate as possible. Unfortunately not all tank types could be included due to sheer numbers, but I have selected those I feel important examples of the vehicle.
The book will comprise 112 pages, (280mm x 215mm, 11 x 8.5 inches), landscape format hardback, fully illustrated throughout with full colour paintings and black and white drawings. The edition will be divided into a signed and numbered Commemorative Edition for all Kickstarter buyers, and an Unsigned Trade edition to retail at £25.
As part of this campaign in addition to the book I am also offering a wide range of rewards. These include postcards, limited edition prints and original paintings and drawings.
Pledges start with packs of postcards, and the Commemorative Edition signed and numbered book, Additional pledge packages offer this book with various combinations of prints and originals.
For those not aware of how Kickstarter works, if you make a pledge from one or more of the rewards offered, your credit card is only debited if the campaign reaches it's funding target. Should it fail to reach it's £5500 target within the 30 days then no charges are levied.
Basically I am looking to raise enough money to cover printing and delivery costs for the initial book run. With your help we can do it!
A NOTE ON THE LACK OF STRETCH GOALS
Many campaigns include such goals, however in this case, I hope the fact that the book run is a signed numbered edition will encourage Kickstarter buyers to see it as a good bargain. Hopefully the backers will also appreciate that the print rewards offered represent a big discount on RPP prices of these signed limited editions. (Prices are almost half normal level.) Prices for original pieces have also been discounted for a limited number of items, and commissions.
A FINAL WORD FROM DAVID
Regardless of whether you contribute towards this project or not, I would like to thank you for taking the time to look at my campaign. I would also like to offer my gratitude to those who have supported and enjoyed my work over the years. I hope if the book does go ahead it will in part be a thank you to all those “Tankaholics” like myself.
Risks and challenges
At present over 90% of the proposed book is complete. A few additional paintings and drawings are still being worked on and will be completed for the conclusion of the campaign in March.
Once funded (end of March) a six week period is required for delivery from the printers of the books, which following signing will begin dispatch by end of May or early June 2016.
Hopefully this timeline may be shortened should funds be made available sooner, or delivery from the printer quicker.
As regards distribution, I will be relying on my agents of long standing, Cranston Fine Arts,(Scotland) to pack, and dispatch all book and print orders.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
