Great news! Thanks to your overwhelming support we’ve quickly reached our goal of £10,000! You guys are stars and without you we would still be floundering at the beginning. But we still have 9 days left, so what now?
Well, we believe in keeping things simple. The last thing we want to do is stray away from the simplicity that makes our brand unique. So, in order to stay true to both you as well as our values, we won’t be setting widely ambitious stretch goals. Instead, we’re going to offer 2 fantastic new jerseys colours, and one new jersey design.
If we reach £15,000 we will offer this new jersey design:
And if we reach £20,000 we will add these new colour options:
So we still need your help, and we’ll continue accepting contributions until our manufacturing partners can’t take any more orders. Every cent you contribute and every friend you tell brings us that much closer to making a long-lasting impression on the cycling industry – one that moves away from the rigid industry logic and puts the focus back on what matters most: you guys.
Our fabulous backers have helped us to make this crucial first step, but we still need your help to make a lasting change!
There’s something about minimalist design that is truly timeless. A true exercise in restraint, whereby every aspect of the design is grounded in both form and function. Yet, despite its appeal, it’s exceedingly difficult to find a high-quality cycling jersey that isn’t plastered with company logos, or other heedless branding.
If you are able to find a jersey that does follow these design principals, you are going to pay for it. Normally £100+. In our world, this is stupid money for something to cycle in. Good design doesn’t have to cost the earth, nor does a quality fit.
Somehow, we were always having to compromise: on looks, on fit, on price.
This was the founding principal for Svelte Cycles, and has been the design brief for our first collection, which includes our flagship product, the Heritage Jersey. With this jersey we have set out to change consumer expectations of what you can get for your money when the focus is on premium quality, rather than premium profit margins.
We have spent the last 12 months meeting factories, testing fabrics, zips, buttons, playing with designs and fits, all in an aim to redefine what a mid-priced jersey can be.
After stripping the jersey back to it’s bare essentials, we then set on developing two products, separately. One a jersey for Men, one a jersey for Women, both grounded in the following principals:
Minimalism: In order to create a truly timeless design, we stripped the jersey back to its essentials. Removing everything and adding back only those features we believed to add functionality you couldn’t live without. When it came to branding we took a stricter approach, with subtle brand signatures, like the brass button key pocket, and hip embroidery.
Function: In order to create a true category leading product, we scrutinised every aspect of the jerseys design and construction. We reinforced the seams around the shoulders, enlarged the width of the silicone gripper around the hem, and finessed the size and location of the pockets, to ensure ease of use, day after day.
The new pocket configuration on the Heritage Jersey, is an example of this. It includes: a concealed, zipped pocket in the seam, which has been engineered to sit away from the body to avoid the "sweaty phone" syndrome we all know and hate; a buttoned down key pocket, to avoid pulling your keys out with your banana; and the traditional three pockets across the back, positioned to keep everything secure, while ensuring reachability and comfortable carrying.
At the heart of the heritage jersey, is a fantastic fabric we found in Denmark. Made from a unique blend of Merino wool (36%) and Polyester (64%). It features the breathability, softness and antibacterial properties of a natural fabric, while benefiting from the strength and shape retention of a synthetic. Machine washability at 40 degrees centigrade, also takes out the hassle of hand-washing, and delicate care instructions.
This fabric's advantages over traditional synthetics can be seen below:
The particular weave and blend of Merino wool we use in the Heritage jersey is such that the fabric has a traditional wool look and feel on the outside, while a smooth soft finish on the inside; which functions both to increase comfort, and enhance body temperature regulation.
In a bid to support local manufacturing and skills being lost from the UK, we brought this world class fabric to London, and, working with a manufacturer in the East End, have created a jersey that is 100% sourced in Europe, and 100% manufactured in London, Great Britain.
We chose our factory in East London to handle all aspects of our production. While more expensive than manufacturing in the Far East, this is made up for by their production expertise, proven record of producing high quality garments and their supportive work environment, where workers are treated and paid fairly.
In the development of the Heritage Jersey, we worked with cyclists across the spectrum. The fit that we finally developed gives the security and performance of an athletic fit, without losing the relaxed cafe culture styling that we love so much.
In addition to a completely new cut and fit, available across five sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL), we also developed the fit of the Women's and Men's Heritage jersey independently, giving two garments designed exclusively for their respective gender.
Now by cutting out the unnecessary overheads that add no value to the garment, and selling directly to you, we are able to offer you this premium jersey, made right here in London, for an affordable price.
This is what goes into the price of a Heritage Jersey:
