Thanks for taking at look at my very first Kickstarter project! My name is Todd VanHooser, a teacher in Arizona, author of The Laughing Moon Chronicles, and the designer behind the tabletop RPG, Adventures Under the Laughing Moon.
This is the very first stand-alone adventure module for my table top role-playing game. The game itself is a good old-fashioned RPG with an emphasis on story-telling, character creation, and figuring out how to shape the world around you through luck, skills, and the roll of your favorite dice.
The Ragged Man is the first stand-alone adventure for the Laughing Moon tabletop role-playing game, and is designed to be both a supplement and an expansion. The story is a blend of fantasy and horror where players are able to enter the Laughing Moon world and affect the outcome of the story through dice rolls and decisions based on the characters they have chosen to play. The adventure is written with all player types in mind. Whether this be a first-time player, or an experienced veteran gamer, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The idea was to create a game that would be fun to play, and a story that would be fun to read.
The Ragged Man adventure opens with the player characters trapped in a gypsy camp, surrounded by a mysterious bank of fog. During the night they hear the legend of the ragged man, as told by one of the gypsies and discover the tragic origins of this tale. For centuries the Ragged Man, a vengeful spirit that appears in scarecrow form, has haunted these lands in a mindless search for his lost children. The adventure takes players on a chase to save the gypsy camp by battling hideous creatures that are part man, part raven, a coven of vampires known as the Sullen Ones, a treacherous enemy masquerading as a friend, minions of the powerful and mysterious Raven Duchess, and the Ragged Man himself. The interior of the book will feature artwork by Scott Alan Gregory. His unique style will bring to life characters and creatures in a way never before seen. Designs include new monsters, gypsy fortune tellers, the Raven Duchess, specific scenes from the story, and of course the Ragged Man himself.
The final 8 1/2 x 11 bound product will be around 50 pages, full color. The interior will also feature numerous full-sized pages of Scott Alan Gregory’s art to really show off the spectacular designs he has created. Along with the adventure story, stats and write-ups for new characters and monsters will be included for Laughing Moon players to add to their collection.
If we can hit a Stretch Goal of $2,400 or more, we'll increase the number of pages in the adventure to 60+ and make room for additional art and content.
If we hit a Stretch Goal of $3,000 or more, I will include 6 additional playable characters in the back of The Ragged Man book, plus increase the content of the book to 60+ pages. These new characters will include unique items that have not previously been published in a Laughing Moon product.
If we hit a Stretch Goal of $5,000, we'll include everything mentioned above PLUS allow each backer the opportunity to name a gypsy character in the book. The names of ALL backers will also appear in the final printed product on a special dedication page.
And lastly, if we hit a Stretch Goal of $10,000, I'll include all of the above mentioned items in the publication, a unique art commission will be signed and mailed to all backers, and I will include all stats, information, background, and secrets of members of the infamous "Carrion Court" which is referenced heavily in the Ragged Man story, but manages to remain off the gaming radar and therefore safely in my sole keeping...for now.
The cost of printing each full color book is expensive on us, but if we have the backers that want to see this product take life, then we will happily offer up even more for you to enjoy!
1) An adventure story like this invites a group of friends together to spend some time laughing, rolling dice, and generally enjoying each other's company. It just so happens that the story I'm offering with the Ragged Man is also a fun, creepy, and compelling one that will help to heighten the entertainment level of that gaming night with friends.
2) Laughing Moon is a small, independent fantasy series & game with aspirations to be so much more. Sure there's a lot of fantasy out there, but those who play Laughing Moon tend to fall in love with it. The focus is on story, character, and finding your place in a dangerous world. Gamers have asked for more, and this is our very first attempt at taking a big step into a broader world.
I've been independently pushing the Laughing Moon titles since 2008. This particular project takes the work that I've done and literally puts a fresh story into the hands of gamers allowing them to leave their own footprints in the sand of the Laughing Moon world.
3) The book is beautifully designed, the artwork is absolutely stunning, and the story itself has all the elements of a campfire horror story blended with a fantasy adventure.
Ultimately I'm very proud of the work that has gone into this project both on my end, and from our artist, Scott Alan Gregory. I'm excited to see this become a reality and get some dice rolling with the Ragged Man story!
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge will be possible production and printing delays with this project. Although the artwork and writing will be complete, there is always the possibility of unforeseen obstacles hindering the layout or printing of the book, and therefore impact out intended timeline and roll-out. To avoid these delays, the plan is to finish everything early enough to have The Ragged Man sent to the printer with plenty of time to spare. Barring natural disasters, abduction by aliens, or being offered a major role in the recently announced Star Wars movie, everything should be ready to go off to the printer by mid-April. Regardless of any potential delays, I am committed to seeing this project through to publication and getting this into the hands of supporters, gamers, fans, and anyone who enjoys great artwork and a good ole-fashioned adventure tale.
