What is it? ✂️
I am making packaging tape that can also be used as useful stickers. That’s it!
Tape or stickers, up to you. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What to do with it? ✂️
1. As tape. Use it for your cardboard boxes, parcels, anything requiring packaging tape.
2. As stickers. Cut segments and stick them wherever and whenever needed.
A collection of 2 rolls ✂️
Roll #1 - Ruler and protractor
Roll #2 - Formats and sizes
Do you know the exact size of the A5 paper format? Of the A2 format? Do you know the exact height of Arial regular printed at 8pt? Do you know what diameter hole you need to drill in order to tap a M8 thread? I do! But I keep on forgetting it.
I also use packaging tape everyday. To ship my products, to store old projects, to box things in the house, …
I’m sure I’m not the only one who could find those tapes useful. So here they are on Kickstarter!
This is the first Kickstarter as part of Quickstarter, a series of campaigns where I give myself a brief that I have to fulfil in a short amount of time, in parallel with my design practice. I’m doing this to challenge my creativity and for the joy of working on “quick/fun” projects.
Each of them will follow the same criteria:
- Designing, prototyping and manufacturing should not take longer than 3 months.
- The product has to be launched on Kickstarter.
- The campaign has to be under 30 days.
- The funding goal has to be below £1 000.
- The reward has to be offered under £20.
- The video has to be shot in 1 day with a smartphone.
Want to launch a Quickstarter too? Feel free to do so!
I have been doing lots of prototypes to test the designs and also to calibrate them with the printers. The prototypes you see in the video/photo are the final designs. They got produced by the factory that will make the large batch. It’s all ready to go.
The tape is made from vinyl, a great material for packing tape and stickers. The print is applied on the vinyl while it is being rolled, so it is possible that the tape stretches a bit. The only thing that can be affected is the ruler. There is therefore a tolerance of ±3mm on the 400mm ruler. It's a useful tape, but don't build a house with it!
Budget and shipping ✅
I’m raising just enough to start the full production run, which is £467. That is to print the minimum order quantity: 72 sets of rolls for each design. Each tape is made from high quality 35 micron vinyl, 48mm wide and 66m long. This budget is 100% only to launch the production and cover the shipping costs. Due to the size of the tape (48mm wide), they will be shipped as “small parcels” and the cost is quite expensive. Sorry but this is what it costs! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Milestones and dates ✅
Here are the project milestones from beginning to end:
- December 2017 - Start of project, ideas/research, prototypes and sourcing manufacturers
- January 2018 - design and prototypes
- February 2018 - final prototypes and Kickstarter campaign build.
- March 2018 - Launch of Kickstarter campaign
- April 2018 - End of campaign and sending Purchase Order to Factory
- May 2018 - Receiving products at my studio and dispatch of all rewards.
- June 2018 - Your tape in your mailbox!
Thanks a lot to Elisa Bertron for working on the project with me, Louise Morgan for the graphical eye, Hannah Thual for holding the Iphone, Stina Gromark for the graphical eye, Sophie Demay for the feedback.
Risks and challenges
I am a product designer and have intitiated many projects and products in order to fulfill them from beginning to end. I have ran 3 crowdfunding campaigns of my own and have fulfilled them all. The last Kickstarter was MOON in collaboration with Kudu studio (check bio!) and we designed and manufactured the product from scratch. This product was a great challenge as it it is made up of more than 60 different custom parts.
In parallel with my design practice, I run Sidekick Creatives ltd where we help other creatives to launch their Kickstarter campaigns. To date, I have been involved directly and indirectly with 48 Kickstarter campaigns.
I am aware of the potential pitfalls of running a Kickstarter campaign. I know what it takes to run a Kickstarter and especially how to wrap the project and send you the rewards. All the costs have been well overlooked, and I have set the shipping date realistically within my capacity. All will be done to make sure the deadline is met and I will let you know if any problem occurs in the production and fulfillment of the project. The great thing is that this product is only 1 component, made by 1 factory!
