About this project
$20,235
Remember the robot toys of the 80s? World-spanning battles of good and evil across the living room floor? Shape-changing and modular warriors of all shapes and sizes? So do we, and those memories inspired BMOG, a building toy system that lets you make wild, robotic animal characters where each component is an action figure accessory.
BMOG characters separate into numerous weapons and devices, each with additional 5-millimeter ports and pegs. Because many toy companies use 5mm as a standard grip or hole size, individual BMOG parts are extremely versatile; they can work with both modern or vintage toylines, some going back over thirty years. Among the dozens of compatible lines are famous franchises like Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, other building systems like LEGO and K’nex, and even obscure favorites like Starriors and the Yuusha/Brave series – plus many, many more!
Each Bio-Mechanical Ordnance Gestalt figure will come on a model kit-style plastic sprue and include a decal sheet so you can build and customize your BMOGs the way you want… and the universal 5mm peg system allows each set to combine with others to form new creations from the depths of your imagination! Let your creativity roar out with BMOG!
Meet the BMOGs
The first two BMOG figures are URSENAL, brash warrior of the heroic AUGMENTOIDS, and MANTAX, slippery sea-spy of the evil PARAXXOIDS.
Ursenal is a robotic bear formed by two assault rifles, two missile launchers, a multi-range scanner, a warhammer, a combat claw, and his head (with 5mm peg "grabbing" jaws)! Ursenal represents the standard BMOG character size.
Mantax is a robotic manta ray composed of a battle axe and a laser pistol! He represents the smaller Mini-BMOG character size. Both figures are gang-molded for affordability and color-consistency and will be injection molded in high-quality ABS plastic.
The Kickstarter Exclusive Set
The first main colorway for Ursenal and Mantax is black (after all, when accessorizing, black goes with everything!) However, by contributing to our Kickstarter project at the $15 and up levels, your reward will include one or more figures in a special colorway produced only for this Kickstarter funding project.
What is that color? It’s up to you!
Contributors will get to vote on their favorite colorway from the following:
1. Arctic Custom - White
2. Toxic Spill - Florescent Green
3. ProtoPrimer - 'Prototype Gray'
4, Action Hunter - Florescent Orange
5. Solar Flare - Canary Yellow
In keeping with the line’s 80s-retro roots, a different set of colors doesn’t just mean a new look, it means new characters! The names, faction affiliations and bios of the Kickstarter exclusive characters depend on the colorway chosen and will be revealed once the campaign completes. Their existence is quite literally in your hands!
BMOG figures are adult collectibles and have not been safety tested for children at this time.
UPDATE 11-19-13: NEW REWARD TIER & TIER CHANGES
Thanks to the generosity of action figure artist Rob "Cheets" Roberts, we can now offer ten custom painted Ursenal/Mantax sets. Each set will be hand painted in a unique deco by Rob Roberts. For examples of his work, check out his gallery here. The $205 dollar tier is the only one that includes this custom-painted figure set.
We have also updated the costs on the BMOG Designer and Deco-Choice reward tiers.
$31,000 - Featherblight & Non-Dino Squad
If the Kickstarter campaign exceeds its base goal by $12,000, this will be sufficient to produce a second set of steel injection molds and will allow for production of the second set of BMOG figures, specifically Featherblight, a bird of prey:
This also unlocks the three member Non-Dino Squad, three prehistoric reptiles that are often mistaken for dinosaurs. The team consists of: Slashback, a dimetrodon, Splashpoint, an ichthyosaurus, and the Multi-Function Pterattacktyl, a pterodactyl.
Once this stretch goal is unlocked, add-on options for Featherblight and the Non-Dino Squad will be added to the campaign. After that point, any backer who has backed for any reward tier that includes an Ursenal or Mantax figure will have the option of adding Featherblight, the Non-Dino Squad or both to their order for an additional charge.
As with Ursenal & Mantax, Featherblight and the non-Dino Squad will get a Kickstarter exclusive color scheme voted on by the backers.
Risks and challenges
The greatest risks are difficulties with the overseas factory resulting in production delays or a need to locate another manufacturing outlet. For the former, this is made less likely due to the simplicity of production process. We’ve put every effort into ensuring that we can produce this line quickly and efficiently. Our model-kit-style approach reduces labor efforts for production to a minimum. That said, there are occasional, unavoidable delays in product production, ranging from shipping delays, customs issues, and production setbacks.
We have secured a manufacturing outlet but if this changes we have alternatives in place. We would be able to change over to one of these alternates if a situation arose and, while it would delay production, said production would still be able to go forward.
Our $19,000 goal covers $5000 for tooling the steel injection molds, $6000 for an initial production run of both figures and their decal sheets, $1900 for Kickstarter fees, $2650 for taxes and other business fees, leaving $3450 for Kickstarter reward obligations (shipping fees, the reward sticker, production costs on 3d printed parts and hand-painted samples, etc.) and a small buffer in case of unanticipated costs. To ensure this would be viable we calculated said shipping costs on an assumption of reaching our goal with the least-efficient shipping-cost-per-unit reward tier.
While we really want the figures to be able to come with stickers for easy customization, this feature could be dropped to allow the project as a whole to continue in the case of financial setbacks.
