About

The Story

An ancient land. An invading conqueror. A strange academy for misfits and outcasts. It all waits to be discovered in Leo & Helen: The Lost City of the Americas, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction, fantasy, and history in an exciting reading experience. Get ready for an adventure filled with time-travel, ancient evils, and betrayal.

As our story opens, unforeseen events lead thirteen-year-old twins Leo and Helen journeying through a portal to the Coast of Peru, where they discover Butterworms Academy for Telekinetics and Telepaths.

As Leo and Helen explore the ancient capital of the Americas, Cusco, it becomes clear that their mother's disappearance was more than just mysterious. Something, or someone, may have been trying to stop a prophecy being fulfilled. And somehow, impossible though it seems, that person may have tracked them 500 years into the past.

This being speculative fiction, Leo and Helen -- twins -- are both telekinetic and telepathic, they can move things and communicate with their minds. The current draft clocks in at 65,000 words, or 300 pages of the published book.

The Story Behind The Story

My late sister-in-law challenged me to create characters that her children could look to as a guide; heroes spanning science fiction and fantasy, that would inspire children to be great. A character or characters who would give those of us who never had a chance, a hero in fantasy that looked like us.

Someone to look up to.

Someone to inspire us.

Someone we might become one day.

And so we've created Leo and Helen to do just that.

Leo & Helen are by design, classic heroes. Our goal is to give children (ages 8 - 99+) characters and stories that inspire us to become all that we can be. To become better people and demonstrate for us the characteristics we desire, namely, love, joy, patience, bravery, honesty, integrity, kindness, humility and self control.

I was simultaneously inspired by a family I met while traveling to Machu Picchu in 2012. This family (mother, father and their 12-year-old son) was adventuring around the world, homeschooling their son, telling me that "the world was a better classroom than their school at home in Alaska".

Leo and Helen, physically modeled after my niece and nephew, embark on a Carmen Sandiego/Indiana Jones/Uncharted /Tomb Raider-esque adventure where instead of going to historical sites in the present day, they literally travel in time to the sites of the seven wonders of the world while they were still prominent.

The Book

Leo & Helen: The Lost City of the Americas will be a hardback 5.5in x 8.5in book printed on 50lb paper. It will have a cloth binding and include a dust jacket featuring the title image.

Why Publish Ourselves: We Didn't Start the Fire

There is a high overhead in traditional book publishing due to expensive staffs, physical locations, and traditional marketing spend. Publishers don’t have a direct relationship with readers - you - because they sell primarily through external retailers.

The Origin of Story -- where a story comes from the first time it was told -- matters more now than ever, but publishers are poorly positioned to deliver as commercial interests often override creative passion.

In short, they often care more about profits than telling a great story -- we want to tell the best story possible. We want to tell the great stories of the universe, regardless of creed, culture, or commercial interests.

Diamond

Our goal as writers and producers is simple: we want to tell great stories of the universe.

A story is not just a moment.

Story is not just what we do.

Story is not just what we read.

Story is who we are.

Story can stay with us in the high moments of exultation, and the low tide of despair;

Story resides in our hearts and can change the course of our destiny.

To create story is to believe in your heart that a story is forever.

To create story is to believe in your heart that there is more to the story than the story.

To create story is to believe in your heart that a story not only can be forever

A story is forever.

Diamond: Forever Story.

If you are interested in getting to know more about our purpose, or have a story that NEEDS to be told, please let us know! We can’t wait to hear from you.

We Need Your Help

We can’t make this book a reality without your help. We decided to launch this book on Kickstarter because right now it’s the only way for us to get the book into your hands. We are huge on collaboration and couldn’t be more excited to involve you in the project. Hopefully this book will inspire you and all the young people in your life to find joy in the journey.

Special thanks to:

Risks and challenges

The book is about 80% done! We are currently in the final edits of the book, and are making some slight touch ups to the illustrations and book design. Our top goal is getting this book in your hands so you can read it as soon as possible. We are ecstatic to hear and see what you think.

We have the printer lined up, as well as in the middle stages of book design (that's actually putting the book together, choosing typography, etc.) We've gone through developmental edits and are in the final rounds of edits.

That being said, we expect to have the book in your hands by July 17, 2018.
