Welcome Comrade! My name is Greg Ash, award-winning filmmaker and founder of We Like Laughter. I am writing to you from a small underground bunker, also known as my parents' house.
Thank you for visiting our campaign to launch a comedy revolution, or RevoLOLtion™ as we're calling it. Our plan is to make 5 brilliant new comedy sketches for YouTube, each one featuring a new set of loveable comic characters. But, in order to do that, we first need to raise some funds. Camera equipment, lighting and novelty wigs don't come cheap. We're aiming to raise an additional £5500 to make our dream happen.
But we're not just asking for your money. We also want you to be part of it! For each kind donation (from £5 all the way to £5000) we're offering a genuine chance of being involved in making new comedy, whether it be as a sponsor, actor, writer or even Executive Producer.
For £30 (£25 if you're an Early Bird) you can become a fully fledged member of We Like Laughter, giving you exclusive behind the scenes access and opportunities to work on our comedy shoots. Oh, and you get to wear a beret!
So watch our video and have a look at the panel on the right to read more about the ways you can join us. Or scroll down for more info.
WHO ARE WE?
My name is Greg Ash. I'm an award-winning writer, director and actor. My comedy short films have been shown at festivals across the world, including Cannes, Palm Springs, Austin and Oldenburg, and my TV Pilot Super Chill featured in the New York TV Festival. Recently my short film Mr. Invisible won the Audience Award at Austin Film Festival and the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Choice Award at Seattle Shorts. I hope to use all this valuable filmmaking experience on our journey.
My lanky right-hand man Chris Ash is my cousin. On his gap year he worked on the checkouts at Sainsbury's. He hopes to bring this valuable experience in handling money on our journey.
You can read more about my previous films here or scroll to the bottom for a selection of my trailers.
"A day without laughter is a day wasted" - Charlie Chaplin
We like laughter. A lot. In fact you could say, we love laughter (but it was too late to change our name). Laughter makes us feel good, it brings us together, and has been proven by scientists to reduce stress and make women find you attractive.
With all the problems in the world - war, poverty, bad twerking - we feel like there's not enough laughter about. And we want to do something about this.
Our mission is simple - to put some more comedy out into the world. The plan over the coming year is to make at least 5 gag-filled comedy sketches and post them to YouTube for you and the rest of the world to enjoy.
'Big deal!' You might say. 'Any man and his cat can be a star on YouTube these days!'
That's true. But our sketches won't be just two guys messing around with their Mum's camera. I've done that before and Mum won't let me use it anymore. These will be genuinely well-produced 3-5 minute long films, with high-quality production values to match those you're used to seeing on TV or film.
But what makes this revolutionary? There is, after all, lots of nice-looking comedy out there already.
True. But for some reason, not much of it has grabbed us in recent years. But rather than sit at home tuning into gritty period dramas, we thought we'd put something out there ourselves. Hopefully something a bit different.
We're calling this a 'RevoLOLtion' because we're starting from the ground up. Neither Chris or I are familiar faces or proven talents. But we're new and we're ambitious. Inspired by some of our favourite British comedies, our dream is to introduce the world to some new loveable characters, who we hope will go on to have a life of their own. We hope these 5 sketches are just the beginning of an epic comedy journey.
And we want to bring you with us! By offering you the chance to get involved, we hope that we can build a great team of people who love comedy, and unearth some new talents in the process.
The exciting part is, at this stage, anything goes. We don't have to play it safe in search of solid ratings. We don't have Channel executives telling us what to do. We answer only to you. The public. We may make some things you love. We may make some things you don't love. But if we fail what's the worse that can happen? You'll laugh at us. And we like laughter.
It's our idealistic ambition to do something new, combined with our commitment to doing it well, that we think makes this a 'RevoLOLtion'. And we're excited about it! We can't wait to introduce you to some new characters like our 2 Techno-Loving Kids Party DJs, or our two wannabe British Lads Rob and Stuart...
SO WHY KICKSTARTER?
What's stopping us from sharing these new faces with the world now?
Yes you guessed it. Money. Wonga. The Benjamins.
As you might expect, we have already put a lot of our personal wealth into this project. I've withdrawn most of my savings, and Chris has generously donated my old Playstation and a half-completed Nando's loyalty card. That gives us about £2000. But right now we're still about £5500 ($8000) short of bringing laughter back to the streets.
This is where you come in...
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
In order to launch this project and fund our first group of sketches for 2014 we are aiming to raise at least an additional £5500 funds. But we're not just looking for free handouts.
This is your chance to get involved with a new group of people inspired to make comedy. We have created a series of rewards (on the right --->) for any level of donation, whether it be £5 or £5000, with each one offering you a genuine way of being part of the RevoLOLtion.
By donating £30 (or £25 if you're an Early Bird) you can become a We Like Laughter Member. This gets you the badge and the red beret, but it also means you'll be part of our team. If you're an actor you can put yourself forward for a part, or if you're a crew member you can suggest yourself for a role. Or maybe you're new to film and you want some experience on set? Of course we can't guarantee a role for everyone but we'll try to include as many of our members in shoots as possible. We'll keep you abreast of all our plans, and when we're getting ready for a shoot we'll give you the chance to be involved.
But our Member plan is just one of many rewards, If you dream of Hollywood stardom, we can feature you in a sketch as an extra. If you're interested in writing, you could script edit one of our sketches. Perhaps you've always fancied yourself as an Executive Producer? Or maybe you want to chat to Greg & Chris? Check out the panel on the right for more specific details of our rewards and how to get involved.
WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES
It's important to point out though that this project does not get funded unless we hit our target. So if we don't reach £5500 (about $8500), no one will be charged and the project won't go ahead! That's why it's so important for you to help us spread the word.
Chris and I have invested £2000 of our own money to the cause, funding our campaign video (made with the generous help of Indigo Rebel and Martin Merenyi), paying off the Kickstarter fees (around £400), and buying all our rewards (those red berets aren't cheap).
This means that all of your generous donations can towards the fun stuff - comedy!
Unfortunately the costs for making a high quality 5 minute sketch can seriously mount up. We need to rent lighting and camera equipment, buy props and costumes, pay for locations, hire vans, and provide transport and food for our dedicated cast and crews. Despite people working for the love rather than money, those costs mount up.
Given our experience in previous productions we've forecast that each sketch will cost around £1100 each.
£5500 means 5 sketches. And because we've already paid for the boring bits, that means that every penny of your donation with be spent on making comedy.
But it doesn't stop at £5500. Anything extra will go on making these sketches look and feel even better. For every £1500 we bring in, we'll write and film another sketch. It's simple - More money, more funny!
Here's a complex graph to demonstrate...

MAKE LAUGH, NOT WAR
Beneath the laughs, the grandiose ambitions and the red berets both Chris and I are very passionate about this project. We believe in the importance of laughter and in our abilities to deliver it.
So please join our RevoLOLtion by getting involved today. You can help us do that by donating whatever you can to our campaign. And even if you can't afford to donate you can help us by spreading the word with friends and family, reposting our campaign page on Facebook/Twitter and emailing to friends.
Together we can make laugh, not war! We promise we won't let you down. Thank you for your fantastic generosity!
Yours in mirth,
Risks and challenges
As with any project there are challenges in the distance that we fully intend to overcome. To give you more confidence in our plans though, we will list the major ones here:
The first potential challenge to consider is what if we don't reach our £5500 target? Well then the project doesn't get funded and we don't get any money. Darkness would descend on the earth, the RevoLOLtion would be over, or at least postponed. But that's not going to happen. We hope that you believe in what we are doing and get behind our campaign and want to be part of it.
The second consideration is what if £5500 is not enough money to fund 5 sketches? It's certainly not a high budget in Hollywood terms. However given Greg's background in low-budget filmmaking we are confident that this is a very realistic amount to aim for, allowing us to bring cinematic production values to our work. We're confident that we can film and release these 5 sketches by the end of 2014, and will aim to have most of them out there online for your viewing pleasure in the first 6 months.
A final thing to consider is what happens if the sketches are actually really funny and we gain worldwide recognition? Well that would be incredible and we certainly hope that our work reaches a large audience. If they prove popular then it would be great to expand our ambitions and create more sketches featuring these characters, and perhaps even develop them into a full TV sketch show. This is hopefully just the beginning...
But that's a dream for the future. For now we are focussed on delivering 5 great new sketches for you to enjoy, laugh and tell your friends you were a part of.
So please contribute to our campaign today and and join us on this exciting adventure! You can also help by sharing our page with the world. Tell your families, tell your friends, and tell your enemies. It might put a smile on their faces!
Thank You, from the bottom of our mirth-filled hearts, for your generosity and support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
