Companion & Co. is a creative social business. We are co-founders Will and Kareen Durbin, working collaboratively with migrants and former refugees now living in New Zealand.
We believe diversity is a very good thing. So, through celebrating the artisanal knowledge carried here in migration and generating meaningful jobs that match such skills, we co-create furniture and textile items.
The Hex is a signature object – a stool (used by many as a coffee or bedside table). Each is hand carved with unique imagery by Sasan, who is Kurdish from Iran.
This Kickstarter campaign is your opportunity to commission Sasan to carve a design of your choice into The Hex stool top. We will work with you to develop a one-off piece of furniture.
Sasan spends 6 hours carving each stool. The following are some examples of what is achievable. Various types of wood have been used in these photographs but the stool tops for the campaign are Sapele Mahogany, the legs from FSC certified Birch ply. Ali (who is from Afghanistan) finishes the wood post the carving process – through which it will darken slightly, the grain becoming more pronounced.
Cut by a CNC machine, the stool is 45cm in height / the stool top 30cm square.
Consider this your blank canvas.
In doing so you are supporting us as we seek to contribute to the integration of migrants within the context of an increasing refugee crisis.
Risks and challenges
We will aim to fulfill and ship pre orders of The Hex in time for Christmas. But depending on locations of international supporters, and how quickly or not we receive and finalise individual designs, this may not be achievable in all instances.
There is also the possibility of unforeseen taxes on arrival in international contexts.
However, we will retain contact throughout the process with all individuals involved so you can track the progress of you new one-off object.
