Hi, we're Elson Designs and this is PiCE, the ultimate case for your Raspberry Pi.
PiCE isn't cute, it's not sweet. It's rugged, industrial design keeps your Raspberry Pi safe, even from water! Yet, PiCE still allows you to use your Pi and the Pi Camera as the Raspberry Pi foundation intended. You can even use it outside!
The PiCE weighs 400g and is 128 x 79 x 30mm in size.
Tooling for die-castings and mouldings costs tens of thousands. As we're a small family business this kind of money is out of our reach, however, as we believe so much in the project, we are contributing over half to the tooling costs and have come to Kickstarter to raise the rest and bring the PiCE to life.
You can use your Raspberry Pi outside, even in the rain!
The main difference between PiCE and other cases is that PiCE is water resistant. It doesn’t care if you spill coffee on it or leave it outside in the rain, PiCE will still take care of your Raspberry Pi, so you don’t have to.
To ensure that PiCE does stay water tight and achieve IP54 to IP55, you need to make sure PiCE is upside down so the Pi is at the top of the case, that you have the side panels in place, and that the rubber gaiter, (which is included in some of the reward pledges) is attached to the back of PiCE. That way, no matter how hard it tries to rain, no water will be getting anywhere near the Pi.
PiCE keeps your Raspberry Pi extra safe with its Zinc construction.
Zinc is a metal and will make the die-cast PiCE strong, tough and perform well under high impacts. With it's industrial design and zinc construction, PiCE will be the strongest case for your Pi, so you never have to worry about your Pi getting damaged or broken and it can come with you wherever you go.
You can shoot video easily with PiCE's wall and tri-pod mounts!
PiCE also takes amazing videos and photos with the Pi Camera, especially when tri-pod mounted. It can be mounted onto a tri-pod with its (1/4-20 UNC) thread, alternatively it can be wall or desk mounted with the four holes in the top or the 4 in the bottom (M3 thread forming screws provided).
PiCE is perfect for those occasions when you want your Pi outside, streaming video for your friends or keeping watch as your own personal security camera.
Fancy programming or electronics with your Raspberry Pi? No problem!
PiCE's side panels have been designed to give you access to the Pi’s ports, such as the GPIO, Audio, Video & HDMI so you can be hacking and programming all night long.
The side panels are on the left and right of the case and are locked in by the base and the lid. When in place, the panels also provide protection for the Raspberry Pi's internals, when the peripherals are not needed.
Light pipes allow you to see what's happening on your Raspberry Pi
Being able to see the status of your equipment is important. We've designed a set of light pipes which allows you to see 'all' the status LED's including the new LED on the Camera PCB.
So, when you need to see what’s going on with the Pi, simply take a look at PiCE’s light pipes.
PiCE cools your Raspberry Pi so you won't sweat!
When you're recording video, overclocking or playing games, the Pi can cause itself heat damage, especially when it's in a thermally insulated plastic case!
However, in order to reduce this risk we have designed an innovative method of cooling, called CSR (Conductive Stress Reducing) passive cooling. PiCE dissipates this heat by using Zinc & through these 3 columns, so you can carry on playing with the Pi without the worry of causing it damage.
PiCE keeps the cables tidy so they're easy for you to manage!
For cable management and security we've routed the micro USB from the front to the back and sealed with a rubber grommet. The grommet will help provide some strain relief and ingress protection.
Want to expand your Raspberry Pi's functionality?
Inside the case on the lid there are fixings for a internal daughter (68x55mm) board which can fit directly into the GPIO pins and connect to external sensors via the rear panel. Increasing the Pi's hack-ability!
How far along is the project?
The design is all complete and ready to rock n roll. We've had prototypes made to validate the design. All we're waiting for now is funding!
What happens when you've reached your funding target?
As soon as our target has been reached, even if the Kickstarter project hasn't finished, we will ask for the tooling to be made so we can start making the PiCE.
We'll ship on a first come first serviced basis and we will be keeping everyone constantly updated with each stage of the PiCE development.
Risks and challenges
We have a few main risks to the project, such as:
Delays in the tooling and initial batches. The impact of this will push back our delivery times to you. However as soon as we have reached our goal we will get the tooling made so we can start making the PiCE. We will keep everyone updates if any problems occur. We are also getting them made in the UK (about an hours drive away) so even with delays we won't have weeks of shipping so they would be with you quicker than if we had them made in the far east.
Another risk we have would be defects in the design. However our main designer (Dave) has years of experience under his belt and we've also invested in prototypes to validate the design in order to reduce this risk as much as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
