Greetings! My name is Barry Allen Williams, I'm an artist, toy maker, and proprietor of Gorgoloid studios in Portland, Oregon. I've been making collectible resin figures for the past 6 years and have recently been exploring the medium of soft vinyl. Last year I collaborated with Awesome Toy and together we turned my resin Fiji Mermaid figure into a soft vinyl toy. Being a part of the production process inspired me to create my own standard size soft vinyl toy line, something that has been a dream since I was a kid.
Grimebrute is a horror art toy that is an amalgamation of numerous monstrosities and tragic characters from cinema that has inspired and influenced my own art. It is an homage to our childhoods and the stories we saw and heard. Influences from Japanese tokusatsu films, American horror, b-movies, and cult cinema percolate from the form. A heavy 90s black metal influence has also made its way into the project through the use of lo-fi aesthetics and grainy imagery.
Last winter I conceptualized and began sculpting the figure that would become Grimebrute. This is my largest sculpt to date and was excited to piece together the foundation of the new process. After completing the original sculpt out of clay, I created a silicone mold and cast a master copy out of resin in the studio. After a few adjustments to the resin master, the figure is ready for production.
The resin master has been sent overseas to the factory and is awaiting the green light to create the wax copy and metal molds from which the figure will be produced. The figure's production will be overseen by Awesome Toy, using the same high quality vinyl used in Japanese sofubi and using the traditional slush mold production style. Those of you familiar with Awesome Toy will understand the quality that will come with this figure. A considerable amount of turnaround time will also be saved by working with Awesome Toy's production team.
The Grimebute figure will stand 9 inches tall and will be fully poseable with 6 points of articulation. The figure will come in the classic poly-bagged with a header card packaging. Header card art will be finished and previewed in the project update. I will be offering the figure in a blank sewer green version (color example below) and a painted 1-off version. I do not have samples of the painted versions, but they will be unique and well worth your trust. I have some great ideas planned for this incentive.
Also available will be a black metal inspired screen printed flag. Each limited flag will be printed by Gorgoloid studio on a 12''x14'' black cotton canvas with white print. Alternatively, it could be used as a gnarly back patch. You make the call.
I have decided to keep the incentives to a minimum to reduce the over all project cost. I would love to make Grimebrute stickers, enamel pins, t-shirts and other merchandise in the future but for the sake of streamlining this project, I've tried to keep things simple. I have some strong stretch goals mapped out and if we can get near those I'll start rolling them out! Mini Grimebrute perhaps?
The generously provided funding will go directly to: producing the wax for the metal molds, creating the metal molds (these two account for most of the funds), vinyl materials, production costs, overseas shipping (another large cost), parcel materials, header card printing, paint (for those who choose the painted version), poly bags, screen print materials (for those who choose the screen print) and Kickstarter fee.
Risks and challenges
Having something produced overseas can have challenges. I have had a great relationship with Awesome Toy and they have always provided detailed production pics and updates in our projects as well as timely delivery. I have provided a little slack in the timeline for any unforeseen production delays. Regardless, you the backers will be updated and notified of the production progress as it happens through the project updates. This is your project too, you guys are the capitol investors and I will keep you in the loop with the progress as it happens.
