Game Play Highlights:

Election Night! is a battle for critical electoral votes in a gripping race for the presidency. Use your dice pool to choose sums (as in the addition game) or products (as in the multiplication game) that could help you the most. Strategically target key states with freezes and re-rolls to counter your opponent's progress, and be quick to adapt strategy as conditions change. Lock down quick victories in small states or work for longer-term objectives in larger states on your way to gaining the 270 electoral votes you need to become president.

Two Games in One:

A Double-Sided game board includes addition and multiplication game versions that develops fluency in the most difficult to learn sums and products.

Players roll 4 uniquely numbered PlaySmart Dice™ to create sums that will help them earn the most electoral votes. The numbers on our patent pending dice produce combinations that are harder to add than numbers that appear on normal dice. There are no 1s, 2,s or 10s, on these dice, and 3s and 9s occur about half as much as numbers 4 through 8, reflecting the reality that many students begin mastering addition with 3s and 9s shortly after mastering their 1s, 2s and 10s.

Players can use up to two sums per turn to apply to individual states. The larger the number of electoral votes a state has, the more rolls it takes to win that state’s electoral votes. Because players are trying to maximize points, they quickly learn to try different combinations of the 4 dice in their “dice pool,” which can represent up to six different harder to learn addition math facts per turn! Compare that to board games that use two standard six-sided dice, where each roll/turn results in only one calculation of numbers where at least one of the die faces shows a one or a two 55.6% of the time (yes, it’s true, the math doesn’t lie). Moreover, players continue to add votes earned on the running vote tally at the bottom of the game board, further increasing mastery of essential addition.

Mastering Multiplication Facts

Like the addition game, players roll 4 uniquely numbered PlaySmart Dice™ to try and earn electoral votes, but in this game they are multiplying the die faces. What’s more, we have carefully picked the state product groups to coincide with the most difficult to remember multiplication tables, weighting the value of these results in the game according to their reported difficulty level.

During play, players use freezes and re-rolls to target desired results, which further encourages repeated calculations involving the hardest to remember times tables. By linking these results to desired winning outcomes, players become fluent in difficult multiplication tables after just a few games. Moreover, the stimulating game play ensures players don't even know they are mastering their multiplication facts as they play.

Tactile Learning of U.S. Geography:

On both addition and multiplication game boards, players assign the results of their roll to an individual state within the corresponding number group by using the color coded index and map. This makes it easier to find the selected state, and emphasizes tactile learning principals by requiring the players to physically mark a state when targeting its electoral votes. Players will typically index individual states several times during the game and learn locations with seemingly no effort. The geographic indexing also helps associate winning number combinations with a natural memory aid, further promoting long-term memory of harder to learn math facts and geography.

Learning How We Elect a President and Imagining Who We Could Become:

Have you ever been asked by a child, or anyone for that matter, how a U.S. President is elected? Ever been stumped trying to explain the Electoral College? Not only does this game teach something essential about U.S. democracy, it does it in a way that transcends difficult to describe concepts by incorporating the mechanics of the Electoral College into game play. No abstract learning here. This game uses the actual amount of electoral votes assigned to each state, and the winner of the presidency must compete to earn 270 votes. It also reinforces the concept of proportional representation present in other aspects of our democracy.

As described in our project video at the top of the page, the unexpected upshot of this game was the inspiring impact it had on the hundreds of kids that helped us play test it. Not only did they have fun, but they were extremely enthusiastic about running for President. Our kids will inherit our Democracy. Let’s have fun helping them learn about how it works. ### Risks and challenges

All of our artwork and production is ready to go! Our publisher has been in the business for over 30 years and they have already produced a run of our dice games after our successful campaign last year and the sample prototypes you see in our video. If there are issues that arise that we can't foresee at this time, we'll be sure to update and let you know.

The minimum number of copies we can run with the publisher is going to cost around \$25,000. In addition to other development costs, we've worked our minimum number to \$21,000 to feel comfortable going forward with larger scale production. The minimal copies we have right now are prototypes, and there will be some improvements we make to them in our final run based on beta tester inputs.
