About

Gimli: a Visual Studio Code extension for front-end developers.

Unlike other visual development platforms, Gimli is targeted towards front-end developers. Gimli is not a “no-code” solution. Instead it tries to combine visual tools often found in “no-code” solutions with your Visual Studio Code development environment.

Don't forget to visit us at gimli.app

Feature highlights:

Layout Tools

Creating complex dynamic layouts often requires the use of Grid and Flexbox. Learning all possible properties and how they interact with one another can be challenging.

Gimli solves this by providing visual tools that greatly simplifies this process.

As you can see in the above GIF, while in “layout mode”, Gimli enables layout tools based on what element have been selected. For example, If an element got its display property set to grid, a set of grid focused tools will be enabled. If an element has a parent with display property set to flex, a set of flex-item focused tools will be enabled, and so on.

Find source

Navigate your files with ease using Gimli's “find source” feature. Gimli lets you instantly find the source code for CSS rules and HTML elements.

As you can see in the above GIF, clicking the "source" button will instantly open up the source code for either an HTML element or a CSS rule.

Works with any framework or library

Just like your browser's developer tools, Gimli is intended to work with any framework or library you chose to work with.

So far Gimli have been tested with React, WordPress, Bootstrap, VueJS, Angular and Stencil

Apply styles

No need to copy and paste styles. By using Gimli's "apply styles" feature, you can see which styles have been added, removed or changed. You may then apply all or just some of those styles.

The above is just an early sneak peek of whats coming.

What you've seen above are implemented features that actually work. Given time and resources I hope to be able to continue improving existing features and implement new features such as:

Why I created Gimli

When I first started out doing front-end development in around 2009, I found this tool called Firebug. Firebug was a Firefox extension that let you debug and edit pages in real-time. I barely remember how my workflow looked before that, but I imagine it wasn't that great.

Firebug was an amazing tool for its time and really enabled a whole new workflow for front-end developers. Today Firebug is gone, replaced by superior built-in developer tools in all major browsers. But when it comes to layout and design, I feel like i'm pretty much doing the same thing I did 10 years ago using Firebug.

CSS have changed a lot since 2009, and for each year, my current workflow seems less and less intuitive. Instead of waiting for browser's developer tools to become better, I decided to try to tackle the problem myself. By making a Dev Tools for designers.

By only focusing on layout and design and by utilizing Visual Studio Code as a platform, I believe I can provide real value to a lot of developers around the world. Also, some more competition in this field might be better for everyone.

FAQ

Will Gimli add any additional dependencies to my project?

Gimli adds one tiny script, only to be included during development builds. Not production builds. The setup is very simple and can be achieved using build tools such as webpack or done manually.

When will Gimli be released?

The beta release is planned to be released Q4 2019 and the 1.0 released is planned to be released early 2020.

Will Gimli collect any data regarding my project?

No.

Why do you need the money?

Since I started working on Gimli about 18 months ago, i've pretty much lived on my own savings. And those saving are starting to run out. The amount i'm asking for is basically the absolute minimum amount to get this thing out the door so to speak.

Also, if I can't reach that goal I don't think there are enough interest in something like this to begin with. My time would therefore be better spent doing something else.

Risks and challenges

As with a lot of other software projects, shipping on time can be challenging. That's one reason I haven't set any exact dates for the final and beta release. I will however try to keep you up to date on the development progress and come back to you regarding more exact release dates later on.
Although I've had some help I should point out that Gimli is at this stage a bit of a one-man show. I do very much hope to be able to involve more people in the future though.
