A new artist's book called A Flock of Signs!
This book is inspired by an art installation I did last summer at 100 Acres @ the Indianapolis Museum of Art called Notice: A Flock of Signs in which clusters of arrow signs are installed through the park, making a Dr. Seuss-like landscape. Because the installation is temporary, I wanted to create something more permanent that would have some of its spirit. The artist's book will be filled with drawings of arrows in smudgy charcoal that respond to the form of the book in the same way the installation responded to the shape of the landscape in the park.
The book also builds on previous installations and drawings I've made of blank signs and billboards, including called Space Available, NYC (2011), a series of sculptures I was commissioned to create by Friends of the High Line, NYC. In that piece, three large sculptures that looked like blank billboards were installed on rooftops along the southern edge of the High Line in the Meatpacking District.
This book will be published by Printed Matter, a non-profit organization in New York City and will be launched there this spring. My first book with Printed Matter called A Field Guide to Weeds (2007; 2008) has consistently been one of their best sellers and we are about to print a third edition to come out at the same time as A Flock of Signs. I'm thrilled to be working with them again on this publication and they've invited me to make an installation in the store with signs like those at the park! The launch of these two books will be timed with my upcoming solo show (April 24, 2014) at Mixed Greens, NYC at the end of April 2014.
I've already made most of the drawings and I'm excited about how they look. The book will be about 5x7 inches and will be printed on a warm paper with a chipboard cover.
I need help to cover the costs of printing the book, including the paper, proofs and shipping! And the installation at Printed Matter!
I've received seed funding from the Carnegie Mellon Berkman Faculty Development Grant but it only gets me a tiny bit of the way there.
The amount I'm asking for is exactly what it will cost to print the book. It does not include shipping or proofs or even the materials for the exhibition. Nor does it cover the cost of shipping out your books to you! If somehow I'm able to raise more than what I've asked, additional funds will be used to cover shipping, proofs and the installation.
The way these things work, if I don't reach the fundraising goal, I'll get nothing and then there'll be no book and no book launch.
So please give whatever you can. And thank you so much for giving my project a kickstart!
(They'll be sort of like, not exactly like, these...)

Risks and challenges
If for some reason there's a problem with printing and production, I would work with the printer to make enough copies for the book launch and then complete the rest of the printing later. If this meant a delay in shipping books to all of you, I would keep in touch to let you know about new delivery dates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
