About this project
AXIOM was born from the notion that the historical impact of dance has been forgotten. Though certain elements of dance have received recent attention through media, television and advertisement, the understanding of its most basic and significant origins needs to be remembered.
AXIOM is an evening-length live dance show incorporating acting, dance and theatrical elements. Through the ages, dance has been an agent of change and truth revealed by the works of historical figures such as Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Isadora Duncan, Twyla Tharp and Pina Bausch. AXIOM strives to continue the legacy of these dance greats by offering a fresh perspective on the present human condition.
AXOIM consists of a team of the most talented artists in Los Angeles from a diverse field of disciplines. Through a highly collaborative process AXIOM will present its audience with a show that moves them to question and to change. We plan to give detailed attention to design, costumery, choreography, lighting, character development, spacial design and production elements. AXIOM will unite these variables into a singular experience.
Paying homage to our dance predecessors with subversive work in the present AXIOM will move the art of dance and entertainment into the future.
Risks and challenges
One of the biggest challenges we face is the translation of an idea to its full realization in movement. AXIOM with be very intimate and specific to the artists involved. This means a high level of trust and sensitivity to the collaborative effort is vital. The work does not strive to be literal or 'black and white', rather an in between space where we expect the audience and participants to create their own significance. Finding the depth in ourselves, in our dancers, and in our audience and how this relatability can coexist will pose a very welcome challenge.
The intensity of subject matter and how it manifests in character development will be a crucial element of the success of our show and our story. From concept to realization, performer to viewer, each step will be a challenge to the mind and spirit of all those involved.
