According to 2013 estimates by the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, California will be in 47th place in the nation when it comes to arts funding per capita, estimated to be budgeted at only 11 cents per student. Given the current economic state, lack of funding for arts education in the state of California and the nation at large has caused many existing public school arts programs to be cut entirely. BruinLIGHTS (Leaders Inspiring Growth and Hope Through Stage) believes that the performing arts are the building blocks for public speaking and social skills. That is why it is our mission to work with schools that have a lack of arts and provide them the education that schools are unable to. Barack Obama Global Preparation Academy is a 6th through 8th grade middle school in South Los Angeles. The school is unable to provide arts education due to a limited budget.
BruinLIGHTS fills this void by providing performing arts instruction to students through an after school program. The structure of our weekly program allows our members to form lasting, impactful relationships with the students and witness their personal growth and transformation over the duration of the program.
This year we have chosen to put on a holiday musical production that explores the origins of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. In putting on this performance, we aim to educate the 32 students participating on different religions and cultures as well as encourage them to work together despite their different backgrounds. Through the motivation of our volunteers and through rehearsals, the students will be able to foster their creativity, grow in self-confidence, build on their communication and problem-solving skills, and establish bonds with their classmates. Your donations will help change these students’ lives and help lead them down a path where accomplishing their future goals is possible. All proceeds will go to programming, supplies, costumes, set building, and tech rentals in order to put on the showcase. With your support our vision can become a reality and these young students will be able to put on their very own production.
Risks and challenges
BruinLIGHTS strives to encourage the students to believe in themselves in order to accomplish their dreams and in putting on this showcase, they will see this as an attainable goal that can be achieved with hard work and dedication. We will be there along the way to mentor and guide the students through this process. In preparing and performing a production celebrating different cultures and traditions, students will develop a deep appreciation for the diversity of others. Our hope is that they will gain knowledge, experience, and confidence in their talents while having fun at the same time!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
