About

Our game is an epic rogue-alike space adventure, inspired by movies such as "Gravity", "Mission to Mars" and "2001". Players take the role of an intrepid space captain, designing and building a unique ship from components in their shipyard. They then launch this ship from Earth into the Solar System.

The mission? To find the STS Hope, lost well beyond Mars, somewhere deep in the Asteroid belt. Many ships are departing to find her - but only one can bring her home. Will it be your ship which finds this great prize, or will you die in the depths of space like so many others?

Features

Build a ship - For the first time in a space rogue-alike, players start the game by constructing their own ship. Use parts in any configuration you like. Build a gunboat, bristling with weaponry. Build a graceful explorer or a pared-down speed demon. Build whatever ship that you think will get you there and home again.

Evolve and rebuild as you play – Each section of Solar Storm will present new challenges to your ship, requiring the design and function of the ship to change as the game continues. Adapt and evolve your design to the ever-changing challenge of survival in the cold depths of space.

Adaptive combat tactics - Need more parts? Make the most of the huge array of weapons to blow the enemy literally to pieces, and take the parts you want from the wreckage. Our combat mechanics allow you to precisely pull apart your enemy and make their components part of your ship.

Unpredictable gameplay – Each time you play will be unique, as Solar Storm will procedurally generate events and encounters on the way to the asteroid belt and beyond. Player will have no idea what they are about to face when they launch, and each play-through of Solar Storm will be uniquely theirs.

A deep, non-linear story – The story of the STS Hope and its disaster is a story of bravery and redemption, told through non-linear story methods. Players will have to explore carefully to find all the clues to tell the full story of the STS Hope.

An immersive, realistic universe – Solar Storm is the story of humanity's exploration of the Solar System. There are no aliens or faster than light travel in our game, the myriad dangers of space travel are enemy enough. This is the golden age of exploration, with all the risks and riches that go with it.

What other people are saying about Solar Storm

Storyline

In the near future, humanity has expanded into the Solar system. But this expansion through space is threatened by relentless solar storms. These interstellar hurricanes of tremendous power destroy ships and lives every time they strike.

So humanity built a new, experimental spacecraft to try and calm the solar storms. They called it what it was: the STS Hope. But when the first solar storm struck it, the Hope vanished into the depths of space.

Now, a decade later, she has been detected within the asteroid belt, powerless, damaged and drifting. So build a ship, fly to the asteroid belt, and try to bring her home.

Download our demo, STS-96: the prequel to Solar Storm

STS-96 is the story of Earth’s first attempt to land on Mars, against the Great Filter Movement , an alignment of states who believe that travel to Mars will destroy the planet, by triggering the ‘Great Filter’ – a force which destroys anyone attempting to build an interplanetary civilisation.

Players take command of the inaugural Mars mission, STS-96, by constructing their ships and then launching their mission. This demo features the core gameplay concepts that Solar Storm will include, demonstrating that our game is a deliverable product for our backers.

A revised version of STS-96 will also stand as a tutorial and introduction to the universe of Solar Storm.

You can find more details about STS-96 and its mechanics in our development videos on our YouTube channel

What do we need the money for?

We need the money to buy development time. If we hit our production budget, the Solar Storm team will be able to devote significant amounts of time to our game, and ensure that we release the best tested and most rigorous game that we possibly can.

With this budget, we can ensure that our game will be released within 9-12 months of being funded, at a gold standard after a full, professional production process. The Solar Storm team want to avoid going to the Steam Early Access route, and allow ourselves the time to develop Solar Storm to the level that we want it to be.

As you can see from our stretch goals, any further funding beyond the minimum layer directly adds new features to our game, including added content, music, different mechanics and entirely new campaigns set in the universe of Solar Storm.

Our Goals

To deliver the best game we can.

Doing so will include:

  •  New engine and graphic assets – As part of the development process, we’re going to rebuild the graphics engine from the ground up, ensuring that we evolve the style and mechanics of the game while improving the fidelity and quality of the graphics.
  •  New assets and components – STS-96 has 15 components in-game with which the player can build their ship. The full game of Solar Storm will include at least 40, plus unlockable components which will be made available as the player goes through the game.
  •  Alpha and Beta testing – With any rogue-alike, especially one which is so player focused and adaptable, balancing each component and build is going to be extremely difficult. Therefore we will focus on ensuring the game balance as the priority.
  •  To deliver a gold standard game – Many video games projects on Kickstarter are too ambitious, and run out of development money before they have gone gold and are at a truly professional standard. We are not going to make the same mistake, and will ensure that this game is as good as we can make it.

Stretch Goals

£33,000: We will develop a series of new skins for components, allowing for a much greater variety in the looks of the spacecraft you can create.

£38,000: We will deepen the story of Solar Storm by adding more hand-drawn, animated cut scenes.

£50,000: Original soundtrack. We will work with a composer to create a unique and original score for Solar Storm.

£65,000: We will develop a much more detailed mechanic for the management of the ship's crew, giving them stats, personalities, unique looks and special skills – not to mention allowing you to monitor their stress levels and watch for them cracking under the strain.

£75,000: Pirate and Raiders. A separate campaign set in the Solar Storm universe, players will play a pirate, raiding shipping, dodging the authorities, and attempting to see how long they can survive in the space between Mars and the asteroid belt.

£90,000: “The Forlorn Hope” Another unique campaign for Solar Storm, based on movies such as “Sunshine” and “2001”. Pilot a carefully designed vessel towards the sun, to build a support station for the STS. Hope to refuel on its inaugural mission. This will involve the development of a new heat mechanic which players will have to manage as part of their journey towards the sun, as well as unique components created for this campaign, including mirrored shields and cooling centres.

£150,000: Galleons of the Void. The final campaign to accompany Solar Storm, “Galleons of the Void”, will be a real-time strategy version of Solar Storm. It would feature an epic story of the first interplanetary war between Earth and Mars. Galleons of the Void will include mechanics for ships with multiple decks, Newtonian physics which will affect gameplay, Battleship style naval warfare, and the integration of autonomous drone fighters into combat.

£250,000: The final stretch goal. This will involve the creation of a separate programming team, to design and develop a multiplayer mode for “Solar Storm”. Our players will become one of the fleet of ships sent out to find the STS Hope, interacting with the other ships en route – fighting, trading, or flying away from their opponents. There is only one STS Hope – can you find it first, and will the other players let you bring it all the way home?

Risks and challenges

We’re trying to minimise the risks for our backers through a lot of pre-Kickstarter development work. Our backers are not just buying an idea, as they can already see the way these ideas are implemented and will be developed in STS-96.

A lot of the initial coding and concept design has already been done as part of this. Additionally, none of our team are rookies at delivering successful products, though this is the first video game project that we have worked on together.

Kieran Mathers has helped deliver two successful Kickstarter projects already, Ghosts of Hefei (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1931671462/ghosts-of-hefei-tabletop-near-future-gang-warfare) and The Department (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1931671462/the-department-sci-fi-noir-tabletop-wargame-rpg) as a writer and producer.

Tom Hallam has been involved in the making of several successful tabletop RPG’s for Jackal Pack Games (http://www.jackalpackgames.com), most notably as project lead, writer and artist on the Steampunk fantasy Homelands series.

John Harrison has created professional design and materials modelling software which is now in use in the construction industry.

However, we are a small team and if something should happen to one of us, then there would obviously be delays in the production of Solar Storm. This danger of delay is the principal risk that we will manage depending on how the situation changes.
