Hi Kickstarters. My name is Alex. My friends and I want to present you a project of a pen & stylus made from Damascus steel and Titanium - Damastylus.
We have also developed Inkless refill, which is superior to regular refill. Damastylus works with all types of touch screens iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phone etc.
Design and Materials
Every day we use many touch screen devices. Unfortunately our fingers do not always like to work with our phones or tablets. Many people need higher accuracy and the ability to draw, others do not want to leave fingerprints on the screen.
Traditional paper is still here and we will use it for a long time. Trying to combine both of them we came up with the idea original pen & stylus that won’t leave you indifferent. In Damastylus we tried to make a beautiful minimalist design that would be easy to use.
With the high quality Damastylus we tried to keep the price affordable. Compare to other pens made from damask steel that cost $200 - $1000, we are able to make $80 price. We chose the materials that most durable, hard and beautiful - Damascus steel and solid Titanium. Titanium Grade 5 is strong and light alloy, it is used in aircraft, spacecraft, military applications etc. Damascus steel is very durable and beautiful material; it has been developed in India around 300 B.C. and used to produce swords.
Damascus steel swirl pattern found is achieved by forging two different grades of steel together, pattern never repeated, so each Damastylus is unique. You can find many different titanium stylus, but none of them are made of the Damascus steel. Damastylus is the first pen & stylus of Damascus steel.
Titanium and Damascus steel have another good feature - they have about 10 times lower thermal conductivity than aluminum, which means Damastylus will be warmer to a touch and it will be more pleasant to write. We have produced several prototypes Damastylus and chose the best of them, the ergonomic and beautiful. In Damastylus can use our Inkless refill or Pilot Hi-Tec-C refill.
First Inkless pens with a metal alloy tip appeared in the 13th century, their tip was made of silver. The silvery markings may resemble a pencil, but unlike the pencil writing was permanent. The disadvantage of metal alloy pen of silver was high hardness, due to which they left too pale line.
We decided to make a special alloy which will be softer than silver and will leave a bright mark on paper and other surfaces. We took the softest metals (Tin, Bismuth, Lead and Indium), and make more than 300 different alloys from them.
After testing all of these alloys we chose the one that left the most vivid mark, couldn’t be erased and did not cost too much. Inkless refill is ideal for taking notes and drawing. He perfectly slides over the surface and your hand will not get tired.
Now you never run into the problem that the ink in your pen suddenly ends. Unlike a regular pen, our inkless pen lasts forever. It does not require sharpening, can write at any temperature, under water, upside down, on wood, plastic, it does not leave stain your hands. The size of our inkless refill repeats size Pilot Hi-Tec-C refill, which can also be used in Damastylus.
We present two versions Damastylus Da and Damastylus Ti. They will be available worldwide. Damastylus Da are made of Damascus steel with some parts made of titanium. Damastylus Ti has more titanium parts and less weight.
We thought it would be not bad to make a version specifically for Kickstarter, that will be available only on Kickstarter. This version is for those who want even a more unique thing. We present two versions Damastylus Da mini and Damastylus Ti mini only for Backers.
Kickstarter restricts making rewards with more than one thing; however, if you want more - contact us on e-mail, we can help you.
Manufacturing Plan and Process
Damastilus makes by CNC machines from solid rod Damascus steel and Titanium.
Parts are made from Damascus steel, afterwards run through electrochemical etching including sulfuric acid (H2SO4), orthophosphoric acid (H3PO4) и ferric chloride (FeCl3). After that comes the stage finish polishing.
Metal alloy tip of inkless refill is melted in a furnace at a temperature of about 250 degrees Celsius. Afterwards we assemble and test Damastilus.
We thoroughly worked on the production chart and thought over most possible problems that can occur.
For right now, we decided to focus only on two regular and two unique for Kickstarter options of Damastylus. But if we can collect enough money, then we going to offer additional Reward Level. We'd love to hear your suggestions for the future update.
If we collect more than $45 000 then we add a new Reward Level "Damastylus Wo". We will use Blackwood and Damascus steel for it. Wooden pattern is in perfect harmony with damask steel.
If we collect more than $95 000 then we add a new Reward Level "Damastylus Tim". This is made of Timascus. Timascus has the same manufacturing technology as Damascus steel, but instead of two steel alloys used two titanium alloy.
If we will be able to collect more than $155,000 then we add another Reward Level "Damastylus Mo". It will be made by the technology Mokume gane. Mokume-gane - is a mixed-metal laminate with distinctive layered patterns. Mokume-gane translates approximately from Japanese "wood grain metal" or "wood eye metal"
Why do we need your help?
Developing Damastilus we find that cheapest machine production of Damascus steel worth over $200, and for handmade production price exceeds $1,000. Damascus steel expensive material, and it is difficult to work with.
At first, we could decrees price to $110 for Damastilus Da, latter we went even further. We improved production technology that allowed us to decrees the price to $79. But it works only if we make many pens and here we need your help.
We hope you help us with your donation, and we can provide you with our high quality Damastylus in a short time.
You will get Damastylus first, and save your money compare to the final retail price. With the funds raised on Kickstarter, Damastylus will become available to everyone.
Site and social:
Our web site: www.damastylus.com
Will pattern fade out? - No! This is not a layer. In the process of electrochemical etching Damascus steel little relief appears, which gives resistance to the pattern. Titanium also does not contain coating - we use Solid Titanium.
Why pattern Damascus steel is unique? - Damascus steel swirl pattern is achieved by forging two different grades of steel together. This is a manual process, so each pattern has its different style for example like a wood pattern.
Why do we use this particular titanium alloy? - This is the most common titanium alloy - it has the best set of features - strength, hardness and is perfect for Damastylus.
What surfaces can Inkless refill write on? – Almost any surfaces: paper, wood, plastic, glass. it can write on a wet or dry surface.
How long can Inkless refill write? - He can write almost indefinitely on paper. if you use it at a hard surface such as a metal, you will need sometimes to sharpen it by sandpaper.
Can I use Inkless refill with another pen? - Yes, if your pen uses Pilot Hi-Tec-C refill.
Is it possible to order several Damastylus? – Kickstarter’s rules prohibit create rewards with more than one item. If you want to buy more - e-mail us and we can help you.
Is it possible to buy only Inkless refill? - We consider this possibility. At the moment the price of the refill will be too high because of the expensive shipping, but if it doesn’t scare you – we will be glad to help you.
Can I somehow influence on the project? - Yes! We'd love to hear your suggestions for the further development of the project. Further updates and new rewards are depend on you. Your ideas and suggestions will be considered and the most interesting and popular can be done in Damastylus.
How else can I help to the project? - If you like our project, but you do not want Damastylus for yourself - tell your friends about it. This will help us to find new supporters. Thank you for your support.
Risks and challenges
We will keep you informed. And you will be aware of what’s going on and see what stage we're at.
Problems that might happen:
1. Trusted Damascus steel and titanium suppliers. Unlike titanium, damascus steel is more rare and we decided to work with three suppliers. This ensures that delay won’t be a problem because of it. The remaining parts are not unique, and we will be able to purchase them from reliable suppliers.
2. Production. We spent a lot of time to prepare the project. We have made several prototypes, that were successfully tested, and allowed us to evaluate and solve most problems. Damastylus will be made on CNC machines in China. Electrochemical etching and producing Inkless rods will be done in our workshop. We have necessary equipment already.
3. We faced with the problem of too high in our opinion the cost of international shipping and we will try to minimize it with our friends from different countries. On the production chart, you can see how long shipment will take. We calculate time with some margin in case of minor emergency.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
