When gods fight, human blood flows.Theomachy lets you take the place of a high god – lord of a group of devoted followers. You have one goal and one goal only: annihilate your foes’ believers and seize absolute power.
Achieve this task by staking the souls of your followers, using the same bluff, psychology, and tactics that have made Texas Hold 'em Poker the world's premier card game.
Once you seize victory, you can rest, and listen to the cheerful song of your people. You have won the clash of the gods. You have won Theomachy.
Now is your opportunity to face off Poseidon against Ishtar! Thor against Cthulhu! Morrigan against Yog-Sothoth!
Theomachy has been highly successful in Polish and German. Historical Games Factory (publishers of Sigismundus Augustus, The Outcast Heroes, Ark of Animals, First to Fight, and Heroes) has joined forces with Petersen Games, publishers of Cthulhu Wars, to bring about the new English translation, adding new pantheons, cards, and rules never seen in any previous edition!
The game is quick to play – typically less than 45 minutes. First, choose your god. Then, drafting cards into your personal deck lets you slowly build your might. Ante up your followers, and stake them against your foes' minions. You can call, raise, or fold, in similar fashion to high-stakes Poker games (and what stake is higher than your own worshipers' souls?)
Your spells are powered by a Constellation, which is laid down in the middle of the table as a Texas Hold'em Poker style flop, river, and turn. Just as in Hold 'em, some Constellation configurations provide you with great combinations for your secret hand of cards, some are disastrous, while most are middling to fair.
Using miracles, spells, and powerful artifacts, powered by the Constellation, send your followers into battles, build temples, and inflict terrible curses on the unfaithful. You face a tough decision in every hand: do you put your power on the line to help your believers, or do you turn your back to cut your losses, abandoning them to certain death? If neither you nor your opponents yield, the showdown takes place - hurricanes are opposed by deathly plagues, tempests extinguish walls of fire, and the ranks of the faithful shrink every second.
Use your god’s power to create miracles and activate myth cards for your heroes, temples, and godly artifacts. For example, the Norse pantheon has access to the Fenris wolf, Thor’s hammer, and more. Babylon has Lilith, Ur, the tower of Babel, and more. Even the Lovecraft pantheons have myth cards and their own dark miracles. Place Wilbur Whateley in the forefront of your fight, or wield the Pallid Mask!
Not one, but two new games are on offer here.
Theomachy: The Warrior Gods includes four pantheons: Celtic, Norse, Slavonic, and Lovecraft's Great Old Ones. It will retail for $49, and includes god sheets, myth cards, prayer cards, power cards, last stand cards, hint cards, the rulebook, and over a hundred die-cut tokens, including followers, priests, prophets, heroes, miracles, and victory tokens. It contains everything needed for 2-4 players.
Theomachy: the Ancients also includes four pantheons: Greek, Babylonian, Egyptian, and Lovecraft's Outer Gods. It will retail for $49, and includes everything in Theomachy: The Warrior Gods - god sheets, myth cards, prayer cards, power cards, die-cut tokens, etc. It contains everything needed for 2-4 players.
You can order just one game (choose “The Warrior Gods” or “The Ancients”), or you can get BOTH games at a discounted price ( “Priest” backer level).
Mix and Match
The two games have different gods, heroes, artifacts, and their 120-card prayer decks are significantly different, though they are completely compatible with one another. You can freely face-off gods from one box vs. those from the other. In addition to the greatly enhanced possibilities this offers, you can play with up to 8 people at once by combing sets! You don’t have to, of course – you can run a 2-player game using both box sets, plus one god (and accompanying myth cards) from each set.
For two-player fans, Theomachy originated as a 2-player game, and fits that style of play well. But it is also terrific in multiplayer. Note – this is emphatically not a cooperative game. Be aware.
This is a first-rate product. If you are familiar with Cthulhu Wars you know the level of quality Petersen Games will bring to bear on Theomachy.
Demi-God and Deity Pledges
There are special pledge levels for those of you that want to be a part of the game. The individual Demi-God and Deity levels let you purchase a place in Theomachy and take the place of a god or hero of your choice.
Our art team takes your portrait and transforms it into one of the gods or heroes in the game and you will appear in all of the Kickstarter versions of Theomachy and potentially the store copy as well.
What this I see about Cthulhu Wars?
As a special incentive, we are also offering our best-selling game of Cthulhu Wars to interested backers at a discounted price who also buy both Theomachy games.
About Petersen Games

About Historical Games Factory
Historical Games Factory is a Polish game publisher founded by a team of Master's Degree and PhDs (in progress) who are also fans of board, card, and battle games. Their knowledge, interests, and experience form a foundation which lets them develop great games, plus teach history and lore smoothly, by means of game mechanics, settings, and graphic design.
Why is Petersen Games offering Theomachy?
The truth is that Historical Games Factory, an established Polish game publisher, approached us. They wanted to work with us on offering their game to the English-speaking market. We were tentative at first, but after playing the game, we were hooked. Historical Games Factory told us that they wanted to add Lovecraft’s mythos to the game, and that they wanted to work together with us on testing and design.
Naturally, Sandy Petersen was unable to resist, so you will see elements of his crazed mind at work in this game.
Risks and challenges
Almost none. The game has already been developed and published in German and Polish, though we are able to add significant new material, and offer it at a lower price.
It contains only cards and die-cut counters, no new technology. The art is being completed (by the original Polish artists) during the Kickstarter!
The vast majority of it is already done. Really the main risk is that Marduk, angered by our hubris, smites us down for trivializing him in a game. We feel this is unlikely, as Marduk has been slow to smite folks of late.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
