Update 142 - Big Box o' Updates

Fellow Fiends – we have another huge update. So here goes:

First, I want to clarify how the independent great old one pledge bonuses work: We have 10 independent Great Old Ones - Father Dagon, Mother Hydra, Abhoth, Atlach-Nacha, Bokrug, Chaugnar Faugn, Cthugha, Ghatanothoa, Yig, & Gobobeg. If you pledged just one Cultist level, you receive Father Dagon & Mother Hydra. If you pledged at a total of $200 or more with Cultist levels, you receive 9 independent Great Old Ones (all but Gobogeg). For each Cultes des Goules level pledged, you receive 9 independent Great Ones (all but Gobogeg). For each Book of Eibon or De Vermiis Mysteriis level pledged, you receive all 10 independent Great Old Ones.

For the Collectible figures – each backer account at Cultist level or above receives one full set of the collectibles, regardless of how many levels were pledged. I realize this is a lot of information and people may want to consider adjusting their pledges, so we have decided to leave the pledge manager open until August 11th, at 11:59 pm Central Standard time.

We now have a pdf of the rulebook. Yay! It is available for download or perusal here. I believe it speaks for itself, and hope y’all enjoy it.

We will be at GenCon on August 14-17th of this month. Hope to see as many of you as possible. You can see and play Cthulhu Wars – obviously backers have priority to get into demos. We are at booth 501, right next to Chaosium. Also at GenCon we are announcing our new upcoming game (which will not be kickstarted until Cthulhu Wars actually ships). Sadly, we won’t have copies of Cthulhu Wars for sale, but at least you can see the few we were able to smuggle out of China, and your friends can pre-order them if they like.

A wandering band of mysterious veiled strangers brought us some neat treats from China, and here are images to amaze and (I hope) impress. Lots of y'all have wondered just how big the box is - so check 'er out below.

We also have images of some of the ACTUAL GAME FIGURES! Woot! I will say that we decided that the yellow figures are a little too saturated in color (it washes out the shadows), so we had the manufacturing plant lighten up the yellow just a tad. So the figures you see below are pre-lightening. Now you know.

Finally, I am sure you will be excited to see that we are currently in the process of approving the final proofs for the expansion figures! While we have ALL the expansion proofs on hand, we are just showing pix of a few of them below. For now.

Cthulhu fhtagn!

My youngest son said the picture of all the cultists looked like a cultist disco.

THE DISCO OF THE OLD ONES!!!!!

    2. Justin Gadze on

Wow! The figures & box look incredible. I agree the red and yellow seem to be much more saturated and the rulebook could use a good proof reading/editing.
Liking the expansions preview pics, look forward to seeing more updates on those.
Keep up the great work guys.

Please proofread the rulebook with a professional. As James Cowling stated there are a lot of apparent mistakes. It's a shame if it's to be printed like that, it took so long to have it ready.
Furthermore, please do the same with the game components having text on them. It'll be close to a year's delay when we get our rewards, most of us didn't mind because "quality was put before haste".

    4. flortz on

There is something fishy about the Complex Battle Example in the rulebook.

      4. [...] "Rich Kills one of his Cultists, and Pains two Deep Ones. "
Rich has already absorbed one of the Deep Ones, so he only have one at this time I think?

      5. [...] "Rich must retreat two more Units out of the Area. He
chooses one of his remaining Cultists plus his Shoggoth and Cthulhu"
Cthulhu was probably pained in step 4 instead?

      Magnifique!

Une seule chose: Bravo pour ce projet tellement bien mené.
Une petite question: Les règles en français qui avaient été si gentiment mis à disposition lors d'un précédent update, vont t-elles être mises à jour?
      Merci encore!

The rulebook pages in the PDF-file are double printed pages. Would it be possible to make an update to the PDF-file so that every PDF-page corresponds to a single printed page?

The "complex battle example" near the end has an error, with Cthulhu choosing to pain two Deep Ones, with only one left.

Just trying to find a link to the pledge manager please...

    9. Mnemonaut on

And I found an error in the Rule Book. Missing word, p. 39 "Everyday we live with the knowledge that it might [be] your last day.". Too late to correct?

    10. Mnemonaut on

No Gobogeg for Cultes'? That's sad. :(

    11. William S. on

The link was in the previous update.

    12. BRW Games, LLC on

Apologies for reposting my comment, but it seems to have gotten lost in the rush. Can you repost the link to the pledge manager? I want to make sure I'm getting Gobogeg.

    13. Ken Thronberry on

      Great update! 3 items:

      1. Those day-glo miniatures simply scream to be painted in appropriately loathsome and slimy tones!

      2. Glad to hear that conventioneers don't get their games ahead of real-life KS investors ...a big pet peeve of this particular gamer.

      3. The photo of the child being overwhelmed by the game box is precious beyond belief. :)

    14. Bruce - Zen Pledger of Brimstone on

Wonderful update. Thanks for the photos Sandy. I'd like to second the motion for a PDF of the rulebook with 'one page to a page' if it's possible. Much easier on the eyes without having to zoom in on my iPad. :-)

    15. Graeme Henson on

Avatar isn't a Black Goat spellbook, it's Shub-Niggurath's special ability.

The artbook was released a while ago, maybe like 6 months ago or so in one of the previous updates.

    22. James Cowling on

Lots of apparent errors in the rulebook. Section on Black Goat refers to "Avatar" a number of times but there's no spellbook called Avatar. Many grammar errors, missing words and/or kerning errors, etc. Would be happy to proofread the text for you, if you like, as an umpteenth pair of eyes -- but a professional pair.

    23. C on

Sorry, forgot the (: after the first paragraph! (:

    24. C on

What? You're not going to sell copies at GenCon? You're taking pre-orders there instead? Why can't you be more like Robotech Tactics? You should have taken a poll like Kevin Siembda did!

Anyway, thanks for continually showing us that you're putting backers first. Looking forward to your next game. I recommend not starting it until backers *receive* their games. I'd like to know as much about the game as possible before the KS, but see Dark Darker Darkest on BGG for why this isn't such a good idea. ):

    26. Craig ONeil on

      @Sandy

It has been so long since the campaign, I am no longer clear on all these old ones.
I would appreciate you clarifying/ confirming.
      Is this correct?

The bonus Old Ones referred to are the 10 independent old ones. Only 9 are supplied to Cultist Pleges exceeding $200, so for me to get number 10 (Gobobeg) I will have to pay extra.

Each Faction has its own great old one, and that Old One is included with its Faction in either the core game or its faction expansion.

The Collectibles are the stretch goals, which includes Old One collectibles plus many other models. A full set of collectibles comes with each pledge, so if my original pledge is Cultist and I add a second one in the PM, I will receive 2 sets of collectibles.

    27. Sandy Petersen 20-time creator

Each pledge at Cultist or higher gets a full set of collectibles. Sorry for my misspeak above.

    28. Jamie B. on

I don't want to "adjust my pledge." I want you to fulfill the written agreement of terms which you sent me when I questioned what those terms were.

    29. Jamie B. on

RE: Collectible figures. Sandy, this directly contradicts prior information.

Do you not remember hashing this all out a year ago? Your son Linc should remember my name--we hashed this out in emails, at which point it was agreed that if one pledged twice, even on the same account, one would get two sets of collectible figures. I kept all of this communication if you really want me to post it all here.

In short, I very specifically expressed my intention of purchasing an extra CdG on top of the BoE I'd already pledged for more or less expressly for the purchase of getting an extra set of collectible figures. At which point you or your representative said that yes, If I pledged twice at a qualifying level I would get two sets of collectible figures. Then you said no. Then lots of people got pissy and you said yes.

As JM Fernandez says (in as many words), that bird has flown, Sandy.

Quote: "But there is no hope for anyone who owns Ogre DE."

...I knew that, a long time ago....

    31. Sandy Petersen 20-time creator
      Superbacker
      on

You are right, JM Fernandez. I will change it at once. Each copy of the game gets the collectibles.

We did not "delay" the delivery of our project. We have been working as hard as we can to get this sucker out. It is an incredibly large and complex game. Compare our speed of completion to other, similar games and I think you will see that we are doing well.

    32. Scott Huber on

So much mind-destroying goodness in this update I'm afraid for my sanity.

On the upside, I look great in a straight jacket.

    33. JM Fernandez on

Why was the way that the collectible figures are given out changed? Fundafull FAQ stated,

"Q: Which collectibles and independent Great Old Ones do I get when I make multiple pledges?
A: There are five different categories of special awards, and these vary with the pledge. 1) For EACH pledge you make of Cultist, Cultes des Goules (which include Father’s Day Specials), Book of Eibon, or De Vermiis Mysteriis, you will receive a FULL SET of the unlocked collectible figures (Cultist, Undead, etc., all the way through to the Leng Spider)."

Which in english means each copy of the game gets a set of the collectible figures. Whereas the update now states,

"For the Collectible figures – each backer account at Cultist level or above receives one full set of the collectibles, regardless of how many levels were pledged. I realize this is a lot of information and people may want to consider adjusting their pledges, so we have decided to leave the pledge manager open until August 11th, at 11:59 pm Central Standard time. "

It's unfair that you change that now after you've taken my money LAST YEAR promising each pledge gets a set of collectible figures AND delayed the delivery of your project.

Two severed heads.. 18.5x45x26 cm then?

    35. Sandy Petersen 20-time creator
      Superbacker
      on

The Cthulhu Wars box will emphatically NOT be able to hold the whole game. The whole game (not counting collectibles) is well over 200 figures, all of which are large. Plus you have five 40"x20" maps, heaps of counters, and so forth. I'm not even sure the box will hold the 20 Great Old Ones all by themselves.

    36. John D on

I don't see Uncle Creepy anywhere.....

(Warren reference for the old timers)

    37. William S. on

I've pledged for DVM, and I have a quick question about the box. Will that box be able to hold the whole game, or is there a bigger box? And if there is a bigger box what is the gravitational force of said box?

    38. Sandy Petersen 20-time creator
      Superbacker
      on

For your convenience, the Cthulhu War box is sized to hold one or more severed human heads for storage.

The only game box I own (out of hundreds) which is unequivocably larger than Cthulhu Wars is my Ogre DE. But there is no hope for anyone who owns Ogre DE.

    39. Tim Felts on

Not sure if I am trying to talk myself into or out of upgrading to DVM from CDG:EB2...

Amazing update, and is it just me but does Sandy look happy or what . Fingers crossed but is this is an amazing product has anybody ever attempted a boardgame as ambitious as this one. I don't think so..:)

    46. James Cowling on

That there is a big damn box. Sandy, in the third picture you remind me of nothing less than everyone's creepy uncle. But in a good way.

    47. Graeme Henson on

When did that Great Old One in the background get added to the independet GOOs? The one with the bald head and glasses in the back? The sculpt on that one is horrifying, Fenris really outdid themselves on that one.

I would say the red is a bit too saturated as well, but I'll end up painting everything anyways, so it's not even a thing.

      Rule book is amazing.
