Still wondering?

For those who are on the fence, or uncertain whether Cthulhu Wars is really as neat as it seems, I recommend traveling here http://boardgamegeek.com/forum/1386889/cthulhu-wars/reviews

Boardgamegeek is the premier website for boardgamers to meet and discuss games, and as of now there are 5 reviews up, plus at least one more coming soon (this last will be a video review by UndeadViking, a well-known game critic).

All of these reviews (including UndeadViking's) are by guys who either have never met me (Sandy Petersen), or have only met me once, when they played the game (I did not participate in any reviewer's games, though I did provide sodas & snacks in some cases), so you can take all these reviews as impartial. These men owe me nothing.

While I am sure that eventually, as with every popular game, Cthulhu Wars will eventually attract a few unfavorable reviews, the strength of these early reports are pretty telling.

Also I guess I couldn't resist a little showing off, for which I apologize humbly. (If that makes any sense at all).

Sandy

You are entitled to some showing off... The quality of the whole product and all the investment you have done... Who could've done better...

      Seven tentacles thumbs up! :)

Promotion is always good! Was there a post on the 6-8 player map that I missed? I'm wondering if that is an upgrade or an add-on?

Where can I read more about the doom phase?

@Sandy: Wonderful! I am seriously more excited for this game day after day.

I just wish I had the big bucks to get everything, but I figure 2 factions and the dreamland creatures will keep me going for a long time :D

I must say, biiiiiig kudos for getting these out before the KS finishes. Way too many game kickstarters end up finishing, never having given out review copies etc. Great stuff!

The new Doom phase (which we have been playtesting like fiends for a couple weeks) does not change game length much. The accumulation of points early in the game plus the fact that Elder Signs are now worth more Doom points than before (they average 1.5+ points) means that the fact players do fewer Rituals of Annihilation doesn't slow down overall play. In fact I had to stretch the Doom track to 30 to keep games at the same length.

It does make the games much more close at the end. Last night for instance, the winner (me! Hurray!) had 30 Doom points, and the runner up had 29. Take THAT, Paul Slusser! (I played Cthulhu, incidentally).

Undead Viking had (literally) to go fix his family car broken-down on the roadside so was unable to post last night as he'd expected. He has played it 4 times, said he liked it in an e-mail to me, and presumably it will be up soon.

This game sound so good, I might have to buy two. One for home and one for wherever else I'm gonna play it. I don't want to be carting a steamer trunk with me everytime I leave the house. :P

We should have a new stretch goal where Sandy provides us with soda (or beer) and snacks for our first time playing the game.

I think its fair to say that there has been so much information about this game now, experienced gamers should know what there getting.

Well, I'm hardly on the fence but the reviews were still a great way to get a broader range if opinions on game play and value.

As with most of the people backing this project I just have to say not only do you get huge bragging rights for your other works but just the quality of this game the depth and uniqueness speaks for itself, I mean come on 2400% of funding. This is going to be the best game ever. I will make everybody I know play this (they are helping me back it I was quite forceful) and their family, pets, dead relatives brought back to life for only this purpose, you get the gist.

I'm with Lagoon. Sandy - I've never met or talked with you, but your body of work speaks for itself.

    17. Jerry G on

@Sandy: There is also a new session report on BGG that describes, briefly, a new Doom Phase of play where players automatically get doom points equal to controlled gates and the once-per-turn chance to ritual.

Does this change affect speed of play, at all? It sounds like it would make early game accumulation of doom points faster, but I'm thinking that balances out with late game slowing down a bit as rituals aren't being done multiple times a turn, but I'm just spitballing.

I have to admit those reviews are very good and they're part of the reason why I'm pledging so much money for CW. Your reputation as a game designer and your commitment to the project as well as your love for this specific lore have been foundamental too.
