About this project
Reef Points is a small producer of hard cider located on the central coast of California. Our cider is made from apples harvested from a family owned orchard near Santa Cruz, CA. We have blended and bottle-conditioned Reef Points to create a refreshing, 7% alcoholic beverage that is light, dry and crisp on the palate. All our labels, packaging design and imagery are originally conceptualized and hand drawn. The ciders reflect a unique creativity found in imaginative, quality practices.
Reef Points is in its infancy and is continuously evolving into something bigger; as we grow, our need to seek outside funding is paramount. The funds raised from this Kickstarter will allow us to purchase equipment that will facilitate the expansion of our production from our current five barrel capacity to a capacity of more than 10 barrels in the next year. The money from the campaign will give us the opportunity to purchase a new apple press, stainless steel tank and bottle filler. Funding will also allow us to buy larger quantities of the highest quality, pesticide-free apples that are essential to our cider. We also need more room to store, create, blend, and test our product. Lastly, this funding will create an exciting opportunity for us to expand our line of ciders from our current house-style to a variety of special releases.
Our first blend of cider has already been created and is currently waiting to be released to the public. We have a TTB permitted location to make the cider, and have met all legal qualifications for hard cider sales. California licensing has been granted by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. We began this process in early 2013. After countless hours of preparation, planning and elbow grease Reef Points is proud to announce the name of our first limited production cider, Kid Neptune. Over the next few months we will be labeling and double wax dipping each bottle by hand to create an elegant representation of our company and our product. Future cider production and packaging will remain the same. Each aspect of the creation of Reef Points is and always will be done by hand.
From the start, Reef Points has focused on building community with its customers. We want to be connected, so we have created ZOOX, our cider club. ("Zoox" short for Zooxanthellae, are a marine algae that symbiotically share nutrients with coral reef, jellyfish and a whole world of sea going creatures) ZOOX is the official "symbiotic" relationship between us and our club members. We print a biannual newsletter filled with artwork, company updates, recipes, etc. and neatly package it with a club shipment of ciders. Members can get their hands on limited releases and truly special runs of cider. ZOOX includes two shipments of cider per year along with an invitation to our annual feast of friends.
We are very excited to have everyone become a part of our needed foundation. With backer support we can build and create a prosperous, viable future. It our hope that every reward represents the product of our hard work, artistic branding and ocean centered identity.
Risks and challenges
Reef Points is founded on creative techniques, excellent hygienic practices and a contemporary analytic approach. The cider we create requires a balance of all three. The company is driven by originality and artistic method without compromising quality.
Over the last year, we have put much energy into identifying future obstacles. As the company progresses, production control becomes increasingly more important to making a consistent quality cider. We will have to invest in top-notch equipment, tools, barrels, and potentially a different winery location. While all this can be overwhelming, we are excited to put our work experience and careful planning into action.
Research and development are critical to building a successful future. We work tirelessly to create an honest and expressive product. An initial challenge ahead involves the introduction of our cider to market. We understand that dry, crisp, bottle-conditioned cider is currently uncommon, but we can't wait to pour a glass for the public!
In the production of any natural product there is always risk in the process. But like any good sailor knows, it's not the storm that is the problem, but how one weathers it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
