Charlie Gemora: Genius Monkeyman is the documentary that will inform, entertain and inspire you. Known as the King of Gorilla Men for his many performances inside gorilla costumes, Charlie was much more than a simian impersonator.
The little man with big ideas arrived in Hollywood as the major studios were forming.
He began his career as a sculptor on the Lon Chaney classics The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera.
Charlie Gemora worked at every major studio in Hollywood. He was a known polymath or Renaissance Man. A very knowledgeable and skilled artist and craftsman, a genius at many things...
Plus, he was very funny!
Charlie was a self-taught artist.
No one else has a story so incredible as Charles Gemora. A most talented and generous man whose life intermingled with the history of Hollywood itself. He befriended Douglas Fairbanks, Thelma Todd, Laurel & Hardy, Marlene Dietrich, Yul Brynner, Brando...
and so many more!
In addition to being an ape-actor, sculptor, painter, and set designer, Charlie was a brilliant makeup artist who shared his techniques and mentored many.
He also created many of the screens best monsters!
Featuring interviews with top makeup artist RICK BAKER and former Gorilla Man BOB BURNS.
"When my friend Jason Barnett first mentioned to me that he wanted to do a special documentary on the incredibly talented Charlie Gemora it touched my very soul as not only was Charlie the best gorilla man ever he was also one of the most creative make up artists for his time. Charlie’s name might not be as well known as Jack Pierce but his work certainly is. The martian in George Pal’s WAR OF THE WORLDS is just one example.
I’m extremely honored to endorse this project."
