Comedy short about a TV ghost hunting show descending on a peaceful Pennsylvania bed and breakfast and wreaking havoc.
Hi wonderful people!
My name is Matt Scott and I'm a filmmaker. I've partnered with my friend, actress/comedienne & talent genius Mary Birdsong (star of RENO 911, ADVENTURELAND, and you can see her now in Alexander Payne's long-awaited film THE DESCENDANTS, starring George Clooney) in the hopes of making a comedy short,
THE SPIRIT SEEKER.
It's about a TV ghost hunting show that descends upon a peaceful bed and breakfast in rural Pennsylvania and inadvertently wreaks havoc upon the locals.
The crew of the TV show is spearheaded by an overzealous, New Age-y, true believer host (played by Mary),her often-stoned but loyal tech guru, and her moody teenage son, Kyle, who secretly believes his mom to be out of her mind.
On one level, this movie is a straight-up spoof of TV ghost hunting shows (of which there currently seem to be about 4000) and their, shall we say, truly unbelievable good fortune in finding "proof" of the supernatural nearly every week. It also explores why people believe in the supernatural, and, well, crazy things in general. (Including us!) But, more importantly, it's a world of characters we truly love and believe in.
It was borne out of a feature script we developed called KYLE BELL VS. THE DEVIL, featuring the same characters. In it, Kyle is forced by circumstances to fake his own demonic possession. Then, things snowball and he becomes a national news story. Mayhem ensues.
(Think THE EXORCIST meets SUPERBAD.)
We've had some genuine interest in the script, and even staged a hugely successful, star-studded reading in New York featuring the likes of Rachael Harris (THE HANGOVER), Andrea Martin (MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING), Wallace Shawn (THE PRINCESS BRIDE) and more! You can see pics from this reading and even some priceless audio on our Throws Like A Girl production website.
Out of our working on the script came the idea that the ghost hunting show itself would make a funny idea for a TV show, and we developed a whole pitch for that show. We even made a fake trailer for the TV show that was produced by FunnyorDie. (You may recognize actor Steve Agee as tech guru "Rob Isley" from his work on The Sarah Silverman Program.)
This short film, THE SPIRIT SEEKER, is our chance to finally get this idea, this world, and these characters really out there for everyone to see.
Ultimately, we'd like to use the film as a pitching tool for a SPIRIT SEEKER series, or for developing an indie film version of KYLE BELL VS. THE DEVIL. Our main goal, however, is to make our audience laugh, love the characters, and want more.
We have a lot of what we need. A great location - Mary's sister lives on an old farm in Amish country in Pennsylvania. A great script - Matt has worked hard to pack as many laughs and great character moments into our 22-minute projected length. And, best of all, an amazing potential cast! Through Mary's vast network of showbiz friends, we have several well-known TV and film actors poised to jump into our movie and give us their time and talent for free.
What we need is money. At first, we thought this was a teeny-tiny project we could cast out of NYC and do for nearly nothing. But, as we attracted the interest of our potential dream cast (and once we have the budget, we can lock them in, schedule the shoot and officially announce their names), we realized we would have to up our game:
1) fly our dream cast to the location shoot (one from the UK), some from L.A.
2) transport them locally once on location, feed them, and board them all
3) rent some better equipment and increase our crew size to make them all look great.
This is where we said:
"This is a job for Kickstarter!"
The video above is a tongue-in-cheek approach to our mission, but we are serious in our passion and dedication to getting THE SPIRIT SEEKER made. We think it's a wonderful comedy that will really click with an audience and just needs your generous help. We've even come up with nifty reward ideas for your support! And we will truly, humbly, deeply appreciate any amount you can help us with.
We want to shoot in mid-December. That's about six weeks away. We have everything ready but the budget. We really believe in this movie. We hope you can believe in us. Even if you don't believe in ghosts.
p.s. Boo! (You totally jumped.)
