Great heroes walk among the world of Tellest, a place of magic and splendor. The strain is considered a blessing to some, and a curse to others. With uncanny abilities, these heroes clash with one another, creating a schism that the planet hasn't seen in centuries.
While excavating the burial site of a forgotten hero, the dwarf, Miter Coldwhistle unleashes an ancient evil that threatens the very planet. When Retrus O'Ryan, wielding the mighty gauntlet, Azaros, crosses paths with Miter, the future of Tellest looks bleak indeed.
Kaos Kreegan, grief-stricken and lost, ventures toward the only thing that instills him with a sense of purpose: duty. With the dragon, Crega, and the warrior, Lyla Brenna, by his side, he sets out to find Retrus and retrieve Azaros. Along the way, Kaos learns that he may have been better off staying in Atalatha.
Meanwhile, Christopher Linus and the ranger, Steel Tip, journey north to the opposing country of Blacklehn. The city of Clifton is said to have been destroyed, and they need to see the truth with their own eyes. Before long, just surviving the harsh country is an adventure in itself.
The Enemy Within is a fantasy superhero crossover novel with a planned publication date of May 2013. The first draft is complete, exceeding an epic 700 pages. I've previously self-published The Bindings of Fate, and As Darkness Falls. The Enemy Within will be the final novel in the Child of the Stars trilogy, and it will also be self-published.
You will enjoy The Enemy Within if you like:
Over the course of this Kickstarter campaign, I will be steadily releasing excerpts of the books. What better way to find out if you like the novels than to see some of the pieces falling into place?
So, without further adieu, and for the first time ever, exclusively on Kickstarter, I'd like to present to you, the first fifteen chapters of The Bindings of Fate, absolutely free.
Additionally, I'd like to give a few looks at As Darkness Falls, if you're interested.

"DeAngelo does show promise as an author of fantasy and I hope he keeps up with his writing ventures. ...it's not a bad thing to have one's debut compared to early Dragonlance novels!"
"Like the X-men, each of them possesses a special ability. This book would make a great movie with all the fight scenes."
"Fast paced right from the start. Pulls you in and keeps you guessing. Looking forward to more from this author..."
This Kickstarter campaign will help fund the initial costs of publishing The Enemy Within, Including:
Kickstarter is the perfect place to introduce The Enemy Within, because there are so many people who know folks who would like to read an epic fantasy with medieval superheroes. If you know anyone who would find the Child of the Stars trilogy intriguing, send them here!
There are three eBooks that will be available at the end of May, which encompass the Child of the Stars Trilogy. The Bindings of Fate and As Darkness Falls have both been released already, but you can get easily indicate here what you want, and a gift email will be sent to you (or a friend or family member you designate). Just tell me an email address when you pledge, and I'll handle the rest. The conclusion of this original trilogy, the novel The Enemy Within will release for the first time in May. You can use your pledge here to preorder your copy of the book, and I will make sure you get it as soon as possible on the day of release. Additional copies of any of these eBooks can be acquired for extra $5 increments.
I have the pleasure of working very closely with a competent and entertaining artist named Rhianna Brennan. She's been so wonderful as to collaborate with me on this venture. One of the rewards we're collectively offering are signed prints of charcoal drawings of the characters. This first set includes five of the major characters from the series, including Kaos Kreegan, "The Child of the Stars", Alicia Mane, "The Firehearted", Steel Tip, "The Steel Prince", Dirk, "The Wolf", and Christopher Linus, "The Master of Iron". When you pledge at the $20 tier or higher, you will be able to select one charcoal to be included in your rewards. Additional Charcoal prints can be acquired for extra $5 increments.
The physical copies of the books are where things get really fun. You'll get a signed copy of a book of your choice, with a personal message from me. Additional copies of any of these books can be acquired for extra $10 increments.
I wanted to offer something very aesthetically pleasing, which could be practical as well. Rhianna Brennan is back, offering a full color look at the characters that she portrayed in charcoal. These tarot sized trading cards will express her interpretation of these characters, so you can get a more intimate sense of each of the heroes.
Limited Edition Hardcovers
As a self-published author, there are very few places where I am able to go to adequately produce print-on-demand hardcover versions of my books. That's why for this project, I'll be providing people with limited, numbered editions of the book in hardcover. This first edition version will never be replicated, meaning that if I ever die a messy and untimely death, it'll be one heck of a collector's item!
Creating Your Own Hero
This is my absolute favorite reward. My biggest strength is in creating interesting characters, and I'd like to invite you to join in that process. A select few people will get the opportunity to collaborate with me on developing their very own avatar in the Tellest universe. We'll decide on a character, their backstory, and of course, their special ability. When we come to terms with something interesting that you can be proud of, I'll write a short story about them. They might even be featured in a future Tellest novel!
If this Kickstarter project raises more than my target goal, I do have stretch goals in mind. Most of them are enhancements for rewards for your pledges. I may also be able to add additional reward levels. I'm a little superstitious about being overly optimistic, but I'll let you decide. If you want to hear about the Stretch Goals I have in mind, you tell me. When it seems that I've got enough traction and interest, I'll update this section, and show you what potential we have going forward.
Beyond the reward enhancements, there's not much more I can do besides graciously accepting your money for my future endeavors. Tellest is meant to be a lasting franchise, and any extra will go to additional projects (rumor has it a tie-in game and a graphic novel might be in the works...).
While my main goals with this project are to get the word out, introduce people to the series, and offer affordable and entertaining rewards, sometimes, life gets in the way.
International shipping makes getting some of the physical products to my overseas friends a little cost prohibitive. If I were to send over three books, the US Post Office would have to charge me nearly (if not over) $60 in shipping!
If money was no obstacle, I would eat the costs myself. Unfortunately, I can't be cavalier with the money I earn from this Kickstarter. I wish I could price my physical rewards a little lower, but the high shipping rate carries over to my bottom line as well.
If, by some grace, I am able to put together some kind of fulfillment deal in the country where you live, I may be able to work around some of the hurdles that hinder me in this project. If you're interested, there may still be some other ways to get the items in your possession without such a wallet-punching price.
As it stands, if you wish to purchase a paperback, it'll cost $20 for international shipping. Once you get to the higher levels, where the hardcovers are available, my options are a little more limited. At that level and higher, shipping is at least $60. Let me know if you have questions, and I will try to explain costs to you. Again, I'm very sorry for any inconvenience this causes.
There's always the chance that I won't be able to meet my deadline. While the first draft is done, this is a massive book, and editing may take longer than expected.
The plan is to finalize the book's content by the end of March before sending it out to a professional editor. After that, it comes back to me for a final sweat. At that point, I'll format the novel properly for its eBook format. Finally, I'll double check and make sure the novel has some beautiful front matter real estate, something you can be happy to keep on your virtual, or real book shelf.
Even if this campaign is unsuccessful, I will still eventually publish this book. It will take longer than I prefer, but I am passionate about continuing the Tellest series.
In case of an act of God, where I am inexplicably destroyed, or mangled into tiny pieces, I will leave instructions to my loved ones to publish what I have.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
