Quantum Quest is designed to appeal to anyone who fondly looks back at classic gaming from the 90's. Featuring characters that look like they could have been ripped right from Super Nintendo or Playstation platformers and beat-em-ups, there's sure to be a hero that'll be your favorite. And even if you've never touched an old-school system, you're sure to love this gorgeous art by sprite artist Sergei Churbanov.
Quantum Quest was created by Michael and Matthew DeAngelo, two brothers who want to bring their love of games to others. They co-founded Black Furnace Games in order to bring their own games to life, and Quantum Quest is where it all begins. In order to fund and create a the most cost effective print run with The Game Crafter, Michael and Matthew need your help!
In order to be financially feasible, Quantum Quest needs to raise $2,000 on Kickstarter. This will account for the minimum size of the print run, as well as the cost of shipping and fulfillment of an order of that volume. We want our game to be especially affordable to you, our earliest backer. With that in mind, the basic pledge of $30 gets you the full game (in the US), in addition to some extra digital content that's bundled in. We're also offering bigger rewards, like bonus heroes. You'll only be charged if the Kickstarter is funded and successful.
In Quantum Quest, each player takes control of a party of five adventurers, and goes through a dungeon of at least twenty chambers, with more added for every additional player over two. This dungeon crawl is always different, thanks to the assortment of cards. Almost all of these chambers exist for only one purpose: to put the hurting on the adventurers.
Player's spend mana to control these chambers, which serves two purposes: first, they can no longer harm their owners; second, the owner decides how their enemies take damage when landing on these rooms. It's a fun, spiteful way to come out on top!
We've added a fun mid-game mechanic. Characters have class specific abilities that they can utilize to change the momentum of the game. Nudge an opponent forward or stop yourself from moving one space too far; deal double damage to an enemy character; even choose to roll one die instead of two.
Our game also benefits from an interesting end-game phase. If all your adventurers perish in the dungeon, you're not kicked out of the game. All the rooms you owned before your untimely demise remain yours, and get a boost since they're haunted. You can choose to deal double damage to your surviving foes when they land in these chambers!
If you want to learn more about how to play the game, you can read or download our current rulebook, or watch this gameplay video:
If you have any questions about rules, ask in our KS comments section, on our Facebook page, or on the Quantum Quest forums.
Quantum Quest is an extension of one of Michael's passion projects. He's worked on a series of fantasy books for the past seventeen years, and Quantum Quest loosely connects with those books.
Several of the characters that feature in this game come straight from the novels and novellas of that book series, and if we're successful with this Kickstarter campaign, you can be sure that more characters are on their way with booster packs and full expansions.
Gatehouse - $25- The Game
Pledge at $25, and you'll get the full retail copy of the game, including 90+ cards, dice, tokens and scorecards. We guarantee you'll never play the same game twice.
We're also bundling a slew of digital content with this level and beyond: behind the scenes material and footage, an ebook novelization of Quantum Quest—we'll even thank you on our website!
Laboratory - $30- The Game + DLC + Kickstarter/Convention Exclusive Character Booster Pack, Old World Legends:
By upping your pledge to $30, you get an awesome extra. We're offering up a pack of adventurer cards that you can only get here on Kickstarter or directly from us when we attend conventions. Earth has its own mighty heroes (and villains), and we're giving you a chance to get your hands on them. With the Old Worlds Legends booster, you get to add the likes of Thor, Merlin, Isis and Arachne (among others) to Quantum Quest.
Throne Room - $250 - Signed copy of a card, original artwork, your name in manual + Laboratory Rewards
The ultimate reward! At this level, you'll get everything from the Laboratory pledge level, but you'll also get to select one of our adventurers. We'll send you a signed copy of that card, and have our long-time artist collaborator Hozure work with you to complete custom artwork of that character. You'll also be included in the game manual as a contributor, so that everyone can see that you're a hero of Tellest!
We made it past the initial funding goal, so it's time to start talking about stretch goals. These can really amplify the cool factor, and we're sure you're going to be happy if we manage to make some of these happen.
We already hit our first stretch goal. At $2001, we added two cards to the base version of the game. Rhys and Nyrshia have some pretty cool abilities, and they tie into the game nicely.
We hit $3000, and two more legendary heroes have joined the likes of Hercules, Thor, Hades and Chiron to bring our grand total of Old World Legends extras up to 18. Everyone who pledges at the Laboratory level or higher will get these two new adventurers, Odin and Medusa, as a bonus.
We've reached $5000 on our last day, and now everyone who pledges for the Laboratory level and beyond will be automatically upgraded to full tokens instead. These feel a lot nicer, and they're easier to move around the board.
NOTE: We reduced this goal from $6,500
A small jump from our first token upgrade will bring more tokens to the game for the Laboratory pledge level. Certain chambers make you lose your turn, or change how you move during your next turn. We'll include status effect tokens to help remind you that the dungeon has changed your progress in some way.
A late addition to the mix, the $8,000 stretch goal will allow us to tell stories within the greater lore of Quantum Quest and the world it hails from, Tellest. This quarterly ezine will be one that we commit to for at least one year, and will contain art, house rules, behind the scenes content and more.
This is the big one. At $10,000, we'll unlock a new pledge level where you'll get all the rewards from the Laboratory level in addition to a prototype "blue box," the very earliest version of our full follow-up to Quantum Quest. This second set introduces powerful new adventurers and chambers that are even more sinister than in the original set, and it can be played on its own, or mixed in with the red box.
With a lot of time left in the campaign, anything can happen, so we'll put together ideas for other upgrades as we move along.
Risks and challenges
The cards have been designed and playtested to our 100/100 rule of thumb: at least 100 people have played our game for over a collected 100 hours.
We've been using The Game Crafter for all of our prototypes, so we're sure you'll end up with the same quality product we've been playing with.
The only risk we run is a risk of delay. We've given a sizable gap for the final delivery date of our rewards, but anything can happen. Production issues do sometimes cause the process to run longer than we like.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
