All stretch goals reached! All backers pledging £15 or more will now get a 2nd exclusive print added to their reward package!
See below for further details of our final Stretch Goal and our new Add On Options!
Hi, I'm Steve Tanner and I'd like to tell you about Flintlock. It's a regular comics anthology series with a difference - each issue will feature stories featuring a unique range of characters in an Eighteenth Century setting, co-existing in a shared historical timeline.
The Eighteenth Century (1701 to 1800) encompassed some of the most tumultuous changes in world history involving some of the richest personalities - and these will be the inspiration for the stories and characters that feature in Flintlock. The book will introduce us to ruthless highwaymen, fearsome pirates, noble samurai and mysterious law-enforcers - and each story will feature amazing artwork by some great comics talent.
This campaign is for the first 48 page book in the series that introduces some key characters to the Flintlock universe!
The first is the title character Lady Flintlock, a very wicked lady with a supporting cast that each have their own secrets. The art on Flintlock is by South Carolina artist Anthony Summey. He's drawn a fantastic 24 page story that not only introduces us to the Flintlock anthology's flagship character, but also sets things up nicely for more action and intrigue to come in future books (which are being planned for release twice a year).
In our second story we meet Shanti, the Pirate Queen of the Indian Ocean, with artwork by Italian artist Lorenzo Nicoletta. Ruthless and beautiful, Shanti puts a new spin on the traditional pirate tropes - so anyone expecting a female Captain Jack may be in for a bit of a shock!
In our third story (which has been added as an achieved stretch goal!) you'll meet The Clockwork Cavalier! London is rife with rumours that the Bow Street Runners have recruited a mysterious mechanical man to assist them in their battle to quell the rising tide of crime in the City! A strange contraption made from iron and bolts? It must be nonsense... mustn't it? A complete story written by Steve Tanner and drawn by Ed Machiavello that introduces The Clockwork Cavalier to the world of Flintlock!
All stories have been lettered by Bolt-01 who has also designed the Flintlock logos and completes our Book One creative team.
You'll notice the artwork is black and white - this is very much intentional. In part Flintlock was inspired by the British weekly comics of the sixties and seventies, many of which featured historical adventure stories with terrific black and white artwork!
Flintlock will be published by my very own Time Bomb Comics - a mainstay of the UK Independent comics community since 2007 and through which I have released several critically acclaimed graphic novels and one shots - including the Bomb Scares horror anthology that was my first successful Kickstarter last year.
I'm not using this Kickstarter as an all-or-nothing approach to publishing Flintlock either; instead I'm interested to see how I can perhaps reach beyond the traditional distribution networks and properly reward everyone who pledges at the same time.
First off, the price of the book (both print and digital) is going to be at least the same price when ordered through the Kickstarter than it will be anywhere else. With free or minimum postage to UK and BFPO addresses and set postage costs for international backers, hopefully you agree that the fixed prices of £3 digital and £7 printed is a good deal for a book like this. Secondly, I'm not looking for 100s of backers. I'm just aiming for 70 print copies at £7 each to be sold through Kickstarter (which is how I arrived at the low £500 target). With 70 copies (or the financial target) reached I'll then start introducing some stretch goals. As with the target, the goals will be realistic, achievable and hopefully desirable!
There are a couple of higher pledges available – you can increase your pledge to get a limited edition print of the cover artwork or a copy of the 96 page Bomb Scares anthology that was successfully Kickstarted last year which also features a highwayman tale drawn by the talented Mr Summey. You can also pledge higher to receive some original artwork - including pages from the book itself. We've also got a couple of very special "top tier" reward pledges – but these are limited and designed to give you something extra special should you want it.
So I'm excited about potentially being able to really give you, as a Flintlock backer, a great comics anthology at a great price without too much of a wait. Hopefully the story teasers posted here are enough to whet your appetite and get a taste of how much a quality piece of work the Flintlock anthology will be. Thanks for reading and I hope you consider backing - I won't be as ruthless as Lady Flintlock herself about it though...
£2000 STRETCH GOAL - THE CHIRURGERY
I'm pleased to announce what will certainly be our last stretch goal - The Chirurgery! This is something that wasn't planned, but has come about entirely due to the success of the campaign. As part of the development of Flintlock there's been a lot of design sketches and artwork ideas produced by Anthony, Lorenzo and Ed, that apart from one or two pieces haven't been seen anywhere. There's the design plans of Shanti's vessel by Lorenzo for example, Anthony's Lady Flintlock alternative pages and Ed's Clockwork Cavalier design concepts. As well as that there's some of the reference material that our three terrific artists worked to when putting together their pages - some of which really do deserve to be shared.
The Chirurgery then will be a special behind the scenes booklet, made exclusively for our Kickstarter backers that will feature all this unseen art, as well as some details as to what it all is. The cover will be in the style of an 18th Century tract (printed pamphlets and tracts were hugely popular at the time - anybody with a literate opinion would take advantage of the new printing processes and produce one!) and not only will it be sent digitally to all backers but a numbered physical copy will be sent to everybody who is getting a printed copy of Flintlock Book One. So, everybody will get a copy of The Chirurgery in one form or another - and every backer will also be listed in a special thank you page within its pages. I wanted to make our final stretch goal unique and perhaps a bit of a keepsake - and something that only those who supported the book in the early days would get. I hope you like the sound of it.
£1500 STRETCH GOAL UPDATE:
As Flintlock Book One has reached its third stretch goal at £1500, all backers who have pledged £15 or more will receive this second exclusive print, featuring this artwork by Ed Machiavello:
I'm also pleased to make available the following add-ons. If you would like to receive any of these just add the listed amount to your pledge!
Now out of print, this is the digital edition of my first journey back to the Eighteenth Century, with art by Andrew Dodd. A complete story featuring the notorious highwayman!
When notorious highwayman Dick Turpin stumbles across a deserted village it seems the ideal place to hide out. But the village is not as empty as it first appears – and Turpin is soon surrounded by hordes of rotting, hungry zombies! This horrific historical has all what you’d expect from a comic featuring the iconic highwayman: Black Bess, highway robberies, Flintlock pistols, the immortal line ‘Stand and Deliver!’, and zombies. Lots of zombies!
By popular demand I returned to the Eighteenth Century to write another horrific highwayman adventure, this time with art by Graeme Howard. A complete story featuring the notorious highwayman!
From the hanging tree at Tyburn to the pleasure houses of Pall Mall, there’s only one thing stopping the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin leaving 18th Century London and returning to the open road - a nest of vampire prostitutes eager to spread their Crimson Plague! (And these vampires don’t sparkle!)
Our high-end add-on but this one is pretty special. This is a ceramic beer mug featuring our cover depictions of Lady Flintlock and Shanti the Pirate Queen by Anthony Summey. They will be produced to order, and therefore extremely limited. Postage for these will be FREE to UK addresses, for those outside the UK there will be a shipping charge - but this will only be determined once the campaign concludes. This is not a coffee mug - this is a pint-sized ceramic tankard that would look at home in any appropriate drinking establishment!
Risks and challenges
All of the artwork for Flintlock Book 1 is complete, fully lettered and in-house with all pages expected to be fully print ready by the end of the campaign. Time Bomb Comics has a solid reputation of delivering quality books on time so no delays are expected. Regardless of the outcome of this campaign the book will be published in April 2016 - however this campaign offers prices and extras that will only be available to Kickstarter backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
