About

The Freedom Collection is the forthcoming collection of sunglasses from Danish eyewear brand DEAR LEADER.

Since 2016, Dear Leader has donated $10 from every sale to charities working to improve the situation in North Korea by smuggling information from the outside in. We now want to take this idea further, by supporting eight international human rights activists in their own fights for freedom around the globe.

The Freedom Collection honours this selection of leaders, business pioneers, dissidents, technologists, activists, artists and journalists, who are dedicated to making our world a more peaceful, prosperous and free place.

This new line of sunglasses is designed by renowned Danish design studio Kilo, and celebrates contemporary aesthetics while representing eight strong individuals and their personal desires.

Disclaimer: Kickstarter’s rules state that campaigns may not crowdfund money for charity, so this campaign is intended only to raise the funds needed to start manufacturing The Freedom Collection. This means we must halt any donations to charity for the duration of the crowdfunding period. Donations will resume for all collections after the crowdfunding period when The Freedom Collection is on the market.

The Activists

The Freedom Collection

The Freedom Collection is borne out of respect for design heritage and a wish to turn a world of typologies and styles into a family DNA; distinct, yet related at the same time.

Each of the eight activists for freedom has a style in the collection, designed to fit their individual expectations and stories while representing the family as a whole.

Design

The main construction of each style is crafted from a single layer of laser-cut stainless steel. All components and key features are folded and shaped from this one sheet of material in a holistic design language.

As a fundamental mark in the Dear Leader brand identity, the Morse Code logo has been a driver for the collection from the beginning, and the mark is fully integrated on the temples of each style. The simplicity and precision of Morse Code is used in combination with a study of sunglass heritage and the specified desires of each activist.

These unique features run through all styles, connecting each individual design in a bonded relationship.

The collection is united by a number of unique features that run through all styles, connecting each individual design in a bonded relationship.

About the activists

Yeonmi Park is a North Korean refugee. She escaped North Korea at the age of 13 with her mother after the regime punished her father for selling items to China and the family was persecuted with ‘guilt by association.’ Her autobiography “In Order To Live” was published in 2015 and she currently studies at Columbia University in the city of New York.

These Yeonmi shades will be Park’s first pair of sunglasses, and were chosen based on a study of her face shape. The lenses are green, the colour of hope, to pay respect to the struggles she has overcome in her life.

Manal al-Sharif is a women’s rights activist from Saudi Arabia and one of the primary organisers of the 'Women2Drive' campaign, which advocates for womens' right to drive in Saudi Arabia. She garnered international attention after posting a video on YouTube of herself, driving, in an act of civil disobedience.

The Manal style was chosen as al-Sharif requested a feminine style and is a regular wearer of butterfly shades. The rose colourway also matches her personal style.

Chen Guangcheng is a civil rights activist who has worked on human rights issues in rural areas of China. A self-taught legal worker, Chen faced a series of prison sentences after organising a landmark class-action lawsuit in 2005 against the country’s one-child policy. In April 2012, Chen escaped from house arrest and fled to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. He now lives with his family in the U.S.

Chen had strong opinions on his desired frame shape and requested this oval typology directly for the Chen style.

Abdalaziz Alhamza is the co-founder of Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently (RBSS), a group of citizen journalists who report on ISIS in Syria. Once ISIS took over Raqqa in 2014, Alhamza fled Syria and helped found RBSS from abroad. The group uses social media and smuggled photos and videos to show life under ISIS, and has served as a major source for news organisations around the world.

The bold choice of round frames for the Aziz style matches Alhamza’s fearless personality and effective activism. The jet black plating represents the activist’s struggle.

Zineb El Rhazoui is a Moroccan-born French human rights activist. She was a columnist for the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo when it published “La Vie de Mahomet,” a comic strip of the life of Muhammad. The magazine was the target of two terrorist attacks and El Rhazoui received thousands of death threats. Zineb later left Charlie Hebdo in 2017 saying the magazine had gone ‘soft on Islamic extremism.’

The Wayfarer typology is made to last and fits with the powerful character of El Rhazoui; The Zineb style was also designed to fit her face well. The sandy, Moroccan-inspired colourway subtly celebrates part of her heritage.

Nico Sell is the CEO of the Wickr Foundation and CEO and cofounder of r00tz Asylum, a nonprofit dedicated to teaching children about the values of white-hat hacking. Sell is also an organiser of DEF CON, the largest hacker gathering in the world. Little is known of Sell and she always wears sunglasses in public to ‘minimise her digital footprint.’

The Nico style’s polygon shape takes inspiration from the Wickr logo and the hyperlink blue colourway references Sells internet activism.

Flemming Rose is a Danish author and journalist. In 2005, in an exploration of self-censorship in Denmark, Rose commissioned a series of cartoons, some depicting the prophet Muhammad, for Jyllands-Posten. The controversial cartoons led to demonstrations in the Middle East, several Danish embassies were attacked, and Jyllands-Posten’s employees faced death threats. In 2010, Rose released “Tyranny of Silence,” a book that explores the cartoon crisis and its ramifications from a global perspective.

Flemming Rose is an everyday wearer of prescription glasses. The pragmatic Flemming design takes inspiration directly from the frames he usually wears.

Kimberley Motley is an international litigator and former beauty queen who currently works on commercial, criminal, and human rights issues around the world. She is the founder of Motley Legal Services and the co-founder of Motley Consulting International. In 2009, she became the first and only foreigner to litigate cases in Afghanistan's criminal and commercial courts. In 2015, the documentary "Motley's Law" premiered at film festivals across the world.

As she is highly concerned about concealing her identity in public, Motley requested mirrored lenses for the Kimberley style. She is a regular wearer of cat-eye sunglasses; a simple yet powerful style with a feminine twist.

About Dear Leader

Dear Leader founder Johan Stahl
Dear Leader founder Johan Stahl

Dear Leader is the brainchild of Danish filmmaker Johan Stahl. After a filmmaking expedition to North Korea, Stahl’s eyes were opened to some of the many shocking human rights violations still happening today. Stahl founded Dear Leader as his attempt to make a contribution to organisations such as Flashdrives for Freedom and Rimjin Gang, who work to help those people denied their freedom, security and dignity in their everyday lives.
