Overview

Treatment  presents a unique opportunity for you to support a locally-produced, high quality film that will expand a much-needed conversation about substance abuse and addiction.

Synopsis

As with all of our films, this fictional narrative is based on a series of interviews and research in order to authentically address real circumstances in the Evansville, Indiana area. A recurring theme that appears in almost all of our research and listening is the damage caused by isolation.

This story emphasizes how isolation and trauma are both causes and results of substance abuse, and how the shame and social stigma of addiction drive a person further into isolation.

Substance Abuse and Addiction

In 2014, Vanderburgh County was ranked as the community with the most methamphetamine use in the world. Since then, methamphetamine use has dropped drastically, but Indiana continues to be the state with the 7th highest rate of drug use and addiction.

According to local experts, trauma and isolation are the driving forces behind the substance abuse habits of most addicts, and substance abuse is a leading contributor to countless other issues in the community, including foster care, unemployment, infant mortality, and suicide.

The goal of our next film is to further a much-needed conversation about this issue and inspire people to look past the shame and social stigma of addiction to connect with people who are isolated.

Our Team

Our Emmy award-winning team is led by director Chris Weatherly, a local filmmaker with over 20 years of shooting experience in both photography and video. See his director reel and other projects at www.chrisweatherly.com.

Chris is joined by writer/co-producer Jonathan Boettcher, who made his screenwriting debut with the Emmy-Award-Winning short film Left Turn and has since written and co-produced Care and Left Turn II.

Leah Roop joined our team during the production of Care as a producer.  Having earned a BA in Broadcasting at Arizona State University, she manages many of the details that go into production like setting up shooting locations, communicating with the cast and crew, and securing props, wardrobe, and hospitality needs.

Ross Chapman serves as executive producer for this team, providing vision and direction for the stories by capitalizing on his deep involvement and commitment to the Evansville community. His research and relationships within the community play a vital role during the listening phase of each film project.

This film would not be possible without the help of the other excellent filmmakers, actors, and funders who join us on these projects.

Past Films

Our first film, Left Turn, highlights neighborhood revitalization, challenges assumptions about poverty, and encourages people to be better neighbors. It garnered widespread success, with over 160,000 views online and an Ohio Valley Regional Emmy Award.

Our second film, Care, educates people about the foster care crisis in our community and has inspired many to take action in a variety of ways. This film has prompted the formation of an official foster care coalition among church leaders in the community and continues to be a valuable tool for raising awareness.

Left Turn II, our most recent short film, continues the story of our first project to examine some of the ways deeply-rooted racial division in our society affects the everyday lives of people in our community. It has been used as an artful way to generate conversation around the difficult topic of racial division, and it continues to do so at screening events throughout the city and in other communities.

Funding

We’ve already raised most of the budget for this film, but the additional $5,000 we hope to raise will be spent hiring actors, production crew members, and renting additional equipment to improve production quality. We work hard to find as many ways as possible to save on costs so that no dollar is wasted and our budget is well-spent on an excellent film. All of our films utilize several volunteer actors and crew in free venue space in pursuit of this goal.

Risks and challenges

As with any film project, there are potential delays that could impede our progress. Scenes shot outdoors rely on specific weather conditions, which create scheduling and filming constraints. Finding actors and actresses to fill the roles in our script also presents a challenge.
