Did you know that Not Your Space was a Kickstarter "Staff Pick" from the very first day? Kickstarter recommends not adding such badges to your project image. In retrospect, here on the final day, I'd say following their advice was a mistake.

"This is not some stripped-down RTS game. It's a strip-it-down-yourself-and-build-it-back-up-any-way-you-want game!"

After a thousand years of space exploration, Humanity has finally arrived at the galactic core. But instead of a rich expanse of planets, we found an interstellar battleground, overrun by warring alien species. In order to survive, we must conquer!

Not Your Space is a fast-paced sci-fi real-time strategy game. Your goal is to defeat your enemies before they destroy you.

In a basic game, you will colonize new planets, build up your fleet, fight huge space battles, and invade or eradicate your enemy's worlds. In a more complex game, you can choose options like diplomacy, research, resource gathering, and ship design.

In all games, you have a vast array of minor options that can effect the game in surprising ways.

And since we're talking about story here, I should mention that, should I be able to afford him, I will be consulting with professional video game writer Matthew Ritter. You can check out his game "Welcome to Boon Hill". The first flavor story (pun intended) is in, and you can read it here.

Not Your Space has been prototyped with graphics from my good friend David E. Gervais, and he's done a wonderful job. Thanks David! He's even done a mid-campaign visual update that really accentuates the different races' personalities.

The new Gorvalt, Vuline, Zatchi, and Mormood ships
The new Gorvalt, Vuline, Zatchi, and Mormood ships

But I want to give the game a more unique look, and to that end I have recruited the help of an experienced video game artist. Here is the direction we are going once funding is secured:

Imagine the glory of this hand-drawn universe! But this amazing art style can only be achieved with outside help (I'm talking about YOU, Kickstarter!)

Every time you start a new game of Not Your Space, you can customize all the options to suit your mood. Whether you need a 10-minute quick-fix, or an epic campaign for hours or days, NYS has you covered!

Just counting the major, minor, and facility options (not map settings or player combos), there are over 200 different combinations of rule-sets you can play with right now! And this is just the demo :O

I've explained all of these options and more in various updates, interviews, and press releases. Here is a brief explanation of how the major game mechanics work:

In a game without resources, building ships requires only money and population.

But in a resource game, there are three more things you will need. They are currently known only by their "colors", red, purple, and green. Red is used to power weapons, purple is used to construct strong hulls, and green is necessary for life support. Ships have a resource cost based on their stats.

Planets produce a steady stream of resources, but mining the deposits in space is much quicker. This is accomplished by building mining ships and sending them to the resources on the map. You can see the strategic implications...

Without diplomacy, all players are at war with all others at all times.

Turn diplomacy on and you can negotiate treaties with other races. At first, this will be a simple cease-fire. But if two sides remain friendly for long enough, they can build a lasting alliance that confers bonuses to both sides.

In a game without research, all ship types are available from the start, and all statistics are determined solely by race.

But in a game with research, you start with only destroyers, colonizers, and prospectors; all the rest must be unlocked through research. Furthermore, you can research things like better weapons and faster reproduction, improving your base stats beyond what they would normally be.

In a game with weapons turned off, all ships fire generic missiles and have no defenses.

But select this option and you can equip your ships with four types of weapons and defenses.

Long range missiles home in on their targets and cause average damage. Ballistic cannons don't do much damage or track targets, but they shoot fast! Energy beams cause high damage at close range, but the further they travel, the more it diminishes. Mines can only lock on at very close range, but they can damage multiple targets.

Each of the four types of defenses will counter one kind of weapon, reducing the incoming damage by half. Point defense beats missiles, armor works against cannons, shields deflect beams, and sweepers defeat mines.

Although the story centers around Humanity's struggle, Not Your Space has 5 playable races. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses. In the graph below, you can see relative attack, defense, reproduction, and economy stats.

Some of the playable races
Some of the playable races

All races currently have the same basic ships, but the statistics of each race will heavily influence the final product. For example, the Mormood will be able to afford many battleships, but on a one-to-one basis, a Gorvalt battleship will always be more powerful.

One of the biggest complaints about strategy games is that the computer-controlled opponents just can't keep up with the creative and adaptable human players. Far too often, Artificial Intelligence takes a back seat to things like graphics and cinematics.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is my main focus. That is what I, as the developer, want to spend most of my time on. I want to create an AI that can observe what the human player is doing, and counter it.

Of course, AI is a very broad topic, so my plan incorporates action at many levels. Individual units will act according to their design and current conditions. A "Fleet AI" will control the grouping of ships into fleets, and a "Strategic AI" will govern larger issues. Each race will have its own approach at all levels, focusing on its strengths.

A unique concern for Not Your Space will be to ensure that the AI can handle all the different combinations of options that are possible. The AI is already pretty good at executing "resource denial" attacks in a resource game. But care will need to be applied when things like supply lines, black holes, and star lanes are introduced.

Not Your Space will feature a beautiful original soundtrack composed by the very talented and versatile Devin Vibert. We worked together on XenoBloom, and I was very impressed with Devin's abilities.

You can hear a sample of his music right in the kickstarter video. It's the main title theme for the game!

...Under Construction...
...Under Construction...

You can play the Not Your Space prototype right now. The demo shows what the game could become with the proper time and funding.

You'll find three tutorials that cover all the major aspects of the game. Completing the first two of these tutorials unlocks "fully customizable games", allowing you to actually try all the things you've been reading about, selecting only the options that you want.

I want to make the Space RTS that you want to play. But how far am I willing to go?

Here's an example: NYS does not feature "buildings". What? That's a staple of the RTS genre!

In Not Your Space, planets fill the role of buildings, abstracting territory, construction, production, etc.

But if I find that enough people *want* buildings, then you will have buildings! And of course, in a game designed to be configurable, they will be an OPTION. Use them if and when you want.

UPDATE:

As posted in Kickstarter update #6, I have indeed designed structures for Not Your Space. I'm even working them into the final public demo! Here's a short video where I talk about the new features:

Why did I bring Not Your Space to kickstarter? Three reasons:

1. To make a really awesome game that lots of people will enjoy. For that I need money to pay for art, sound, music in the short term, and for software licenses, website fees, and marketing in the long term.

2. To build a community around the game. I have lots of ideas, but I know you can think of things that I haven't. Let's build this game together!

3. Freedom from a publisher. Not Your Space is my creative vision, and I want to maintain control over the project and its IP.

Not Your Space is intended for windows.  If there is enough demand for mac, linux, maybe even xbox or mobile, then those avenues will be explored.

Multiplayer has been a consideration from the beginning of work on Not Your Space, but it is outside the scope of the initial release.

That being said, depending on the demand for human opponents and the total funding received, head-to-head multiplayer is possible.

Not Your Space is on Steam Greenlight right now. Please go vote yes!

And in the final hours, David Gervais came through again with some shiny new art:

And on the final day...
And on the final day...

Risks and challenges

Not Your Space is already a fun playable game. Most of its core systems are functional. There is nothing in its design that presents a technical challenge that I can not overcome.

I ran a successful kickstarter campaign in 2013, and released "Approaching Infinity" with the help of hundreds of backers. I got a lot of things right, and in the end, the game is awesome!

But I also got a few things wrong:
1. Completing the game took longer than I estimated
2. I was not able to take time off of work with the money I raised.
3. When the game was done, I signed a binding contract with an exclusive publisher.
4. That publisher encouraged me to create DRM for the game

I HAVE LEARNED FROM MY MISTAKES!

1. I'm giving myself a solid year to work on "Not Your Space"
2. When this campaign is successful, I WILL take time off work.
3. NYS will be released on Steam, itch.io, and other friendly distribution sites.
4. I will not create DRM.

My point? I'm going for absolute risk minimization. I've been making games since 2002. I'm not going to stop now. I want to make "Not Your Space" a unique and engrossing experience for people who love all sorts of strategy and space games.
