About this project
Who are we?
We are a family based technology business serving our community with over 10 years of service with 38 years experience. Our storefront is located in Wahpeton ND where we used our own experience combined with years of research to create a high value, low cost alternative 3D printer that would not be quickly outgrown.
The MK1 3d Printer
So first and foremost let me make sure everyone understands that THIS IS A KIT. Included in every Mk1 kit are all the parts, electronics, and materials to build a very nice 3d printer. Also included are detailed written instructions. This, along with videos and public forum on our website, coupled with the fact that the very design of our 3d printer is such to make it very easy to assemble.
The Mk1 has a 6x6x6 build area, and utilizes two fans to give a great printing experience. The blower fan is for support, bridging, and general print cooling. The J-head hot end also has a fan on it to cool it for printing quality PLA prints.
Every kit also includes our Spool holder with tubing so that the filament is not just flailing about.
Ok, But does it work?
I want to take a minute to tell you about the quality of the product we are offering. Everything on this kit was hand chosen, from the mechanical end-stops that have plugs so you don't have to know how to solder , to the arduino - based motherboard that is tried and true, everything was designed with quality in mind. Consider the wiring, every point that must be attached with a screw fixture has a Ferrule end on it. Also all of the screw holes on the printer itself are marked to aid in assembly. It is little details like this that i think will set us apart in the budget 3d printer landscape.
- Build Volume: 6"x6"x6" (150mmx150mmx150mm)
- Resolution: <50 microns (0.05mm) X/Y & 100 microns (0.1mm) Z
- Nozzle Size: 0.3mm or 0.4mm
- Hot End: J-Head ( easily replaceable, upgradeable)
- Filament Diameter: 1.75mm
- Materials: Tested with PLA, Nylon 618, and NinjaFlex
- Power: Includes 110v Power adapter. 12v 6amp
- Controller: Ramps 1.4 board (Arduino based)
- Software: G-Code compatible (Using Marlin Firmware) / Free Open
- Source programs like Repetier Host or Pronterface
One of our main focuses is that the design had to be open source. All of the instructions, laser cutting instructions, and plans will be available on our web site (Makrtoolbox.com, still under construction) once the initial kits have been shipped. We look forward to using the power of the open source community to help make the printer better and better.
The main tool needed to make our 3d printer is a laser cutter. Our first laser cutter we designed and built ourselves.
After using this laser for about 6 months is was apparent that we needed something bigger. So we bought a much larger laser that more appropriately met our needs.
We currently have two laser cutters and the ability to produce approximately 4-6 kits a day and have the room to expand if necessary. We already have all the partnerships in place to provide electronics, motors, hot ends, etc.
There are certain things that we are doing to save you time in the build process and make it easier for you. The firmware comes preloaded and set up for your printer.
New Reward: Personalized Key chain Fob

This is a material only kit for the Mk1 3d printer. It includes all wood pieces and an acrylic build plate.
Makr kit 2
This backer level includes all the electronics needed to build your own Mk1 3d printer. It includes Ramps 1.4, arduino mega, stepper drivers, Nema 17 motors, mechanical endstops, cabling, J-head Hot end, fans, power supply, and others seen in picture above.
Basic Mk1 3d Printer kit
This is the basic kit. It includes all the parts, materials, and electronics needed to assemble and run the mk1 3d printer and the spool holder.
Advanced Mk1 3d printer Kit
Includes Everything from the basic kit and the LCD / Control Panel. This has the LCD readout and the ability to print from SD card.
Acrylic Advanced Mk1 Kit
This is the Acrylic version of the the advanced kit, it includes the printer kit, the spool holder, and the LCD / control panel all made out of clear acrylic.
The source files for the printed parts in the kit will be released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license. Backers of this campaign will be granted early access ahead of receiving their kit.
Only skilled users should attempt to build or operate this kit and do so at their own risk. The operation of this kit involves electricity, high temperatures, and other potential hazards. Children should be supervised at all times when near the printer. The printer must not be left unattended during operation for any reason. All Customs and duties for international shipping are the responsibility of the recipient.
Risks and challenges
We already own all the manufacturing equipment to produce the Mk1 3d printer. We simply need to order the materials (specifically the elctronics) in bulk to afford to sell it at the price we have have set.
If we do not meet our kickstarter goal we will still be able to produce and sell our 3d printers, it will just take us longer .Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
