Nelson Mandela gave me important advice 13 years ago when he said “Jane, if you really want to make a positive difference in the world, you should focus on conflict resolution and citizen led change.” I followed his advice, and this has led me on a journey where I’ve become a global advocate for advancing women’s and girls’ human rights.

In this book I chart what it has been like to be a participant in the rise of a global women’s movement and a global citizenship movement, and the opportunities and challenges inherent in this momentum for social change. I share what it takes to sustain the momentum and retain the resilience needed for real change to occur. I talk about the programs that are making a difference to women and girls realizing their universal human rights, and the role of men in supporting this work.

There’s also my parallel spiritual journey, and I reflect on what this path has meant for me. This includes the deep internal questions, and the answers that sometimes come, that have been an intrinsic part of this journey of working globally with and for women and girls to secure their full human rights.

Why did I write my book?

I’ve been writing a journal for most of my life as, for me, writing is as natural as breathing. This book has been in formation for the last six years. I feel privileged to do the work I do and I also feel the urgent need to accelerate the momentum to achieve women’s and girls’ full human rights.

Over the last few years, so many young people have asked me for advice on how they could do similar work and how should they begin, or change course, to make this possible. Many have said they wished they could access a book that could be a touchstone and resource for their own journey, as they set off.

So, I felt increasingly compelled to write this book as a combination of a love of writing, a love of my work, a love of being a mutual mentor with young people (we learn more than we give), the urgency of the cause and a recognition that this journey has been at a time of citizen rising.

Behind The Scenes

I've priced my project at the absolute bare minimum.
Here's a breakdown of what is involved:

  • Production costs - includes author/editing team, marketing team, video production, book layout design, t shirts for pledges
  • Kickstarter/Amazon Fees - Roughly 8%-10% of final funding.
Production of books - these rates vary depending on amount ordered, but it is likely our most sizable budget item.
  • Shipping and shipping supply - another big cost, depending on amount shipped, and number of international orders.
  • Buffer Amount - necessary for ANY Kickstarter. Set aside for dropped pledges, lost books, refund requests, and any miscalculations.

How To Get Started

Step 1. Decide which Pledge description you like, taking note of any international shipping estimates.
Step 2. Create a Kickstarter account, determine payment method.
Step 3. Wait and see what happens! If my campaign is successful, in 30 days, your account will be charged and your reward is secured. If my campaign is unsuccessful, then you will NOT be charged.
Step 4. If you would like to join in helping this project succeed, then feel free to spread the word! Tweets, Facebook shares, blog posts,

Update #1 Another Chapter

Less than a week. That's all it took to get to 50% thanks to all of you who backed my book.

Thank you SO much for believing in me! You really came through and I have another chapter to post... Download and read Chapter 22 as a PDF

There is still the next 50% and there is still time. The more we raise the better I can make it. Every cent goes to making this book.

Thank you for telling your friends, colleagues and classmates. And for checking for updates.

This Kickstarter experience feels like being lifted up by so many hands and voices. Which goes to the heart of movement building.

Thank you!

Jane

Risks and challenges

I am seeking to manage any risks inherent in this project by having a tight knit, well qualified team of friends supporting my work. This includes ensuring a double editing process to manage any errors in the manuscript
.
I am also working now to secure the necessary permissions for images and quotes within the time frame set for pre-publishing. We have developed a project plan for publishing on-line on Amazon and for sharing details of the book using a strategic social media campaign.

I realize that waiting months to receive book orders requires a good amount of patience; however, my plan of using print on demand printing should ensure a speedy turnaround of the product.

I have both a hard deadline and a reserve deadline based on how everything is tracking with the work required to publish this book. I am also preparing an FAQ to manage any questions people may have about issues and initiatives described in the book, in order to build an engaged dialogue with a global community.
