Who are we?
We are a small Bristol based business focusing on using wholesome, natural ingredients to create delicious cakes and puddings, allowing for that feeling of indulgence without any of the naughtiness.
What we do?
Our Norty creations are made with a crunchy oat base, a creamy plant-based cheesecake middle and are finished with a superfood topping that will leave you feeling deliciously satisfied without any guilt.
Why we do what we do?
Whilst our founder Elspeth was working in London she was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Being from a foodie family rooted in clean living, she left London to train as a chef in Italy and then studied at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, based in New York. The more she learnt about food as medicine, the more she actively changed her diet becoming vegan in the process. Eventually she was told by doctors that she no longer had symptoms of PCOS. She is now on a mission to show people that vegan and free-from food is delicious and also more nutritious.
Elspeth then founded her first company Elspeth's Kitchen, where she set about perfecting her recipe for vegan cakes, starting with a smooth and creamy cashew plant-based "cheesecake". https://elspethskitchen.com
From this Elspeth decided to create a range of puddings that she could make more widely available, representing her fun loving attitude to indulgence whilst maintaining a vegan diet. Freedom from food is something that is very important to Elspeth and her team, which includes guilt free indulgence. This is where Norty was created.
Norty puds are gluten-free, soya-free, refined sugar-free and vegan. They currently come in three scrumptious flavours and are sustainably packaged in recyclable glass jars, which you can reuse or upcycle at home.
What we need
Our business currently relies on food festivals and events to bring delicious plant-based cakes, puddings and coffees around the country. We stand firm in the scolding hot summers and brace the blustery winters in our worn out gazebo because we are passionate about sharing our puds and getting to know the people around us.
Meeting new people is something that we love and want to carry on doing. We have set up this campaign because we would like to be at even more festivals and events around the whole of the UK. To do this, we really need to scale up by adding a food truck!
Elspeth and her boyfriend Joe can be seen at a lot of events and they often use their home (a converted horse lorry) to transport everything around. This means taking everything to events is quite a challenge with the living room being filled with stock! A food truck would allow us to have our coffee machine and refrigerator set up wherever we went and would make a perfect pop up stall at events. We aim to be at a different festival / event each weekend of summer 2019 (rain, hail or shine!) - a tall order, but we are excited to try!
We are truly grateful that you've taken the time to read our story and for any pledge towards our journey, however big or small.
We cannot wait to start this new chapter!
We've set our goal to be lower than we need. Kickstarter operate a policy whereby they do not release any funds unless you meet your target goal, so we have set ourselves some stretch targets instead.
We want our food truck to match our brand values, and this means that we want to do it up ourselves. This will allow us to do it on a tighter budget but it also means that we will be able to make it personal and fun!
The truck that we have set our sights on needs a fair amount of TLC before it is roadworthy, and these are our estimates;
£4500 will get us a second hand truck, no frills
£6000 will get us a lick of paint, Norty signage, some shelves and a chair (if we're lucky!)
£7000 will get us a coffee machine, which is pretty essential since we plan to make coffees
Hitting £10,000 is where we would really like to be in order to get the van kitted out, full of fuel and ready to roll! Everyone will receive an extra celebratory pudding from us if they have pledged £40 and more.
If we hit £15,000 then everyone will receive a pack of three extra puddings if they have pledged over £20 and more.
Thank you for getting to know us!
Some reviews that other people have given...
THESE CAKES ARE INSANE!! The friend who gave these to me is vegan, I myself am definitely not, and so was ominous, and of course let her know it (I think I'm actually only leaving this review just as some kind of guilty apology). If all vegan food was this good I would become vegan tomorrow.
To me, Elspeth's Kitchen is a passionate and ingenious place for great tasting cakes and treats, produced in artisanal ways and small batches. Everything is gluten free and vegan, which is great, but really what I love the most are the flawless flavours. I can also warmly recommend the intimate cooking classes.
I ordered 4 cakes to enjoy with friends wand they were delicious. Sweet enough and very tasty. A much better and healthier choice than sickly sweet shop cakes. The vegans and gluten-free among us were very complimentary and I will definitely buy again.
I recently went on a fabulous yoga retreat (Eden Rise) in Totnes. Elspeth was our resident chef extraordinare for the weekend. The food was perfect, delicious, healthy and imaginative. I’m pleased to see she also provides cookery workshops ...I’m going to book up for a class with some friends. Thank you so much!! We didn’t go hungry 😋
I really recommend doing a workshop with Elspeth, it was so fun and really opened my eyes to how cakes can be made with such natural, unprocessed ingredients! The cakes were delicious and Elspeth was really great when explaining and giving tips. Would definitely love to do a workshop again.
Risks and challenges
Launching a Kickstarter is always a risk if it doesn't succeed or deliver properly. I have been running Elspeth's Kitchen for two and a half years and launched Norty in February this year. Everything up until this point has been funded by myself.
I love doing what I do and would love it even more with your support. I am super determined and want more than anything to show people how delicious wholesome natural food can be and make it accessible to as many people as possible.
No number of orders will prevent me from getting it to your doors for Christmas and beyond.
I have a good relationship with a trusted courier company to ensure everything will run smoothly, as well as some great printers.
For those that book for workshops or catering then I have a pretty clear diary and will work with what it is that you want to make sure that we deliver what is convenient for you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
