Terralith Dice: Organically designed metal RPG / D&D dice

£9,340

We want to make the best, truely unique and most affordable set of metal RPG dice available today...the Terralith Dice

Terralith are a set of 7 metal RPG dice designed to offer practical style and fashionable elegance to gamers who want something more than just a standard flat face dice. They look like this:

and here's a closer look at the D6 an D10...

Well finishes to be exact.  We're offering the Terralith in 12 different finishes: Raw (for painting your own set) Galvanic (Black Zamak, Old Brass, Old Silver and Old Copper), Unlimited (Purple, Orange, Blue and Green); and Rare Metal finishes Gold, Palladium and Ruthenium.

Note that the Gold, Palladium and Ruthenium dice are coated rather than solid Gold etc.

We want to be really flexible with how we're running this so you can either pledge for either a full set of 7 Terralith dice or individual copies of your favourites. If campaign funds successfully, then we'll contact you after the Kickstarter and just tell us which version of Terralith you would like! Check out the add-ons section for more information.

Dice need to be unbiased (random) which conversely means that the design of dice tends to be very uniform. Flat faces based on a platonic solid are the norm which gives an almost mechanical feel to the die. With Terralith, we are breaking away from this format to give something more complex, more elegant and more organic.

We're planning to produce Terralith by casting (centrifugal casting to be precise). This is where molten metal is poured into a mold to create the dice, this mold is spun very quickly to force the metal to fill the mold completely eliminating any air pockets. Casting is perfect for making complex shapes that would be difficult or uneconomic to make by other methods and is the process we plan to use to create Terralith. Such a complex design presents a number of manufacturing challenges, so we've worked hard to create a technique that will reliably produce amazing dice every single time and at a much more reasonable price compared to other methods (e.g. 3D printing, CNC milling etc.).

The metal which we're planning to use is Zamak, which is zinc alloyed with aluminium, copper, magnesium and a few other metals. We've chosen Zamak as it's non toxic, hard wearing and has exactly the right melting point that we need to cast Terralith.

Raw

After molding, the raw dice are soft tumbled in a ceramic bath to remove any spars left over from the molding process. There's no galvanic or varnish coating so these dice are perfect if you want to paint your own set.

Galvanic

As with the Raw finish, but where the dice are then lowered into a molten metal bath. This electro-chemically bonds the galvanic layer (e.g. copper, silver etc.) to the base metal (Zamak) and is a very hard wearing and precious finish, perfect for continuous rolling. Still, as metal like copper, brass and silver tend to oxidize during time, a transparent varnish is then applied to further protect the dice. Some "old" galvanic variants make use of metal oxidization to create a two tone effect, with darker engraved areas.

Unlimited

As with the Galvanic finish, but rather than a transparent varnish being applied, the varnish is a mixture of pigment and varnish (hence the colours). As a result the varnish is less hard wearing than the transparent varnish (as we are replacing some of the varnish with pigment) and the colour will slowly chip away with continuous rolling. For this reason, we're keeping the Unlimited finish as exclusive to Kickstarter, and suggested for collectors only.

Battle Finish

A super hard wearing finish that is a combination between the Galvanic and Unlimited finishes. This is a multi-step process where the dice are first applied with a Galvanic base finish (e.g. copper, silver etc.). A coloured varnish is then applied, with the dice then undergoing a soft tumbling in the ceramic bath to expose the parts of the dice that will take the most wear when rolled. This gives an excellent double-finish effect, where the metal emerges through the colour, and looks like the dice have been battle hardened;) A special extra hard wearing transparent varnish is then added to give an incredibly robust finish that is perfect for continuous rolling.

Terralith is a collaboration between Grublin Games (Kernow, UK) and Irondrake (Curno, IT).

Irondrake is handling the design and production aspects of Terralith, Grublin is handling this Kickstarter campaign, the advertising, the fulfilment and planning side of things. If everything goes according to plan then we have all summoned something new and beautiful into the world - dice that not just look and feel incredible, but are totally different from anything else available today.

Grublin Games, an independent board game publishing company was founded in January 2013 by Henry Jasper. With the help of our backers, we've successfully published two highly thematic, strategic board games that immerse players in the game and focus on creating complex, interactions between players. We're exceptionally proud of them both! You can check out the campaigns for Cornish Smuggler HERE and Waggle Dance HERE with more information on our website (www.grublin.com)

With both campaigns, our highly engaged backers developed into communities that helped to make the games truly unique. Both communities were truly involved in the design process of both games, playtesting, enhancing thematic elements, proofreading and choosing final components - we couldn't have done it without them.

Irondrake is an Italian dice and miniatures publishing company that has been making award winning gaming accessories for the last 5 years (before that they started designing fashion accessories for boutique brands such as Armani, Diesel and Levis). Combining true Italian design, their Irondie series was launched to high acclaim and if you want to see some very nice mechs, have a look at their Ironburst miniatures. There's no doubt that Irondrake are specialists in their field. You can find more information on Irondrake via their website: www.irondrake.com.

We're using Kickstarter for a number of reasons:

  • Firstly is the straight forward funding one. Although with two successful games under our belt, Grublin remains a distinctly independent publisher and cannot afford to successfully create the Terralith dice in anything more than the most basic way; for Irondrake it's a similar story. With Kickstarter, not only can we make these dice, but we can make Terralith the dice that they deserve to be and we can honestly say that they are the best they possibly can be.

  • Secondly, Kickstarter gives us a sanity check that we are publishing something that there is a genuine demand for. By operating in this way, we ensure that we keep our quality high and our companies current.

  • Finally and probably most importantly, we don't want to do this on our own! By opening up some of our design decisions (packaging, finishes etc.) to the backer community it's obvious to us that Terralith is going to be better than we can publish on our own - besides, it's more fun with more people!

Loads of reasons!

  • We can't do this without you!!!
  • Together we can make even better dice
  • Cheaper dice! We're offering Terralith on Kickstarter with a significant discount on the SRP
  • Exclusive dice!! Some of these finishes like the RAW finish will only be available through Kickstarter
  • You can direct the design - we are actively seeking your feedback on what finishes (colours) we have and how we should proceed with stretch goals.

Unfortunately we can't quite give free shipping for Terralith (we tried!!!), but we can make it super cheap and we want to be completely up front about how much it will be.

When you make your pledge, Kickstarter will automatically calculate your shipping based on where you live so you can see straight away what the cost is.

UK: GBP (£) 3

Europe: EUR (€) 6.95, GBP(£) 5, USD($)7.60

USA / Canada:  USD 10.64, EUR (€) 9.73, GBP (£) 7

Everywhere else: USD 10.64, EUR (€) 9.73, GBP (£) 7

Because of the way the shipping costs out, its much more cost effective to post multiple dice rather than just singles or sets of seven so make sure you have a look at our Add-Ons section for more details.

We've based all our currency conversions from xe.com at time of writing.  If something unexpectedly crazy happens then we'll update, so take these as our best guess.

Risks and challenges

We've worked hard to ensure that Terralith will be produced to the highest standards possible, at a realistic price and on time. Although any manufacturing presents challenges (complications with the molds or finishes are the biggest risks with Terralith) and has unexpected problems that can spring up, we have planned contingencies in our timeline to account for any delays that may occur.

Irondrake's intimate experience of the casting process, the fact that production will be happening much closer to home (Milan), Grublin's track record of planning and delivering amazing kickstarters on time makes us fully confident that we can deliver on our promise of getting the best dice that we can possibly make to you by October while keeping you fully informed of the process every step along the way.
