Hello, my name is Richard Bailey, I am a London based photographer with 20 years experience and I would like you to back the publication of my book, which is called 'Darwin's Pigeon's'
The images you see here have been in the press worldwide and now I need your help to produce this beautiful book, which will be limited to 1000 copies.
I have been very lucky that Charles Darwins’ great, great grandson, Randal Keynes OBE, visited one of my exhibitions and has very kindly agreed to write the foreword for the book.
I started to photograph these pigeons back in 2009 when it was the 150th anniversary since the publication of the 'Origin of Species' and also the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth. Fancy Pigeons, believe it or not, played an important part in helping Darwin prove his theories.
Charles Darwin set out to prove that all fancy pigeons are descended from the common pigeon known as Columba Livia or Rock Dove and this particular research, would in turn help him with his theories towards the 'Origin of Species'. In 1855 Charles Darwin became a pigeon fancier and set up a breeding loft at his home in the village of Downe, Kent.
The images I have taken were intended to celebrate the pigeons which played such an important part in Darwin's work. But then the project became more than that. The photographs became ‘portraits’ of the birds and they took on an anthropomorphization. (I think you can say that.)
Because the different breeds did take on unusual characteristics, some looked a little bit naive, others have a conceit about them, an air of self-importance as they puff up their chests and present themselves to the camera.
Over the last few years I have set up my small studio at a number of fancy pigeon shows and photographed over 50 different types of pigeon. I wanted to photograph them in such a way that the abundance of colours on the different pigeons are brought out and emphasised, as well as showing off their characters.
I have always admired the animal paintings of George Stubbs, especially his horses and the very regal way in which he depicted them. I wanted to give the 'humble' pigeon this authority. I hope that this series of weird and wonderful pigeons that Darwin worked with carries on the great tradition of classical animal iconography.
The book is beautifully designed and ready to go to print. It will be hardback and measure 24cm x 17cm.
This book will be the first of it's kind and if you like pigeons you will LOVE this book, if you like photography you will LOVE this book and if you like pigeons and photography, WELL this is just perfect for you!!
I hope you like the project, either for yourself or for a friend and I look forward to sending you a copy of the book!
Thanks for taking the time to look and best wishes to all.
