About this project
My name is Emmanuel Barbosa, I’m an 8 year veteran for the United States Navy and the father of a lovely 3 year old whose name is Leonardo. I came straight from the island of Puerto Rico at the age of 19 into the military and since then, my life has been a rollercoaster of events which have led me to become the man I am today.
Recently I had my first deployment as a father and it was an interesting experience to say the least. I never realized how much I loved my son until we had to be apart from each other for an extended period of time. During the time I was deployed, I missed so much of his first times and those are moments I’ll never get back. Worse yet, is the fact that he becomes very upset with me when I am gone that not even seeing me on a webcam is good enough for him.
But, these are sacrifices I’ll gladly make to ensure he has a better life than I did growing up. The sacrifices that military parents such as I make are enormous and the love for our children is immense. But, we will never get back the time that was spent away from our kids.
Personally, I had no idea how to explain to my 3 year old that no matter how far away we were from each other, he was always in my heart and mind. Thus, I wrote him a book and titled it “Father Is Always with Me”. I started sharing this book in digital format with my co-workers and everyone started asking me when the physical version was coming out in order to obtain a copy.
I started looking for ways to get this published, and I came to the realization that in order for an actual publisher to pick up my book it might take longer than my natural life-span. I started looking for other ways to get my book published and I noticed that a lot of military children books were made by self-publishers and in my research I noticed that it would cost me a lot of money to get my own book out there.
But, I’m not rich enough for that, and as such this campaign was born. You see there aren’t enough books out there aimed for military children or kids who see their parents go away for long periods of time. I am aiming my book at these children. I want my book to get into the hands of military children everywhere, and I know that a physical publication will be the most effective way. Your contributions will help me achieve my dream of seeing my books in the hands of those who are affected the most by their parents departure, our children.
What We Need & What You Get
I’m not going to beat around the bush here; it cost easily 3,200 U.S. Dollars to have my book published. I have a list of self-publisher websites and I’m pretty much set on hiring AuthorHouse as my publisher. They have a good list of programs they offer for children’s books and my book is already created. All I have to do is give them the money and the book in order to have it appear on the market.
But, you won’t go at it alone, choose one of our perks ranging from my eternal gratitude, first edition copies of my book with an autograph, postcards with a little message, dedications to your favorite little military brats, and even *gasp* a T-shirt for those who go above and beyond in our campaign! These perks are going to be signed by the author and maybe even have Leo’s signature in it (if he’s in a good mood!)
If this campaign isn’t funded the entire way, all funds will be returned to their original owners as stated in the rules and regulations of this website, so if this campaign does not succeed, don’t fret your money is safe.
Contributors, if you’re anything like me, have a relative in the military that has kids, or even simply are a supporter of the military, then you understand how valuable it is for those parents who go away for a long time to have different means of telling our children we love them.
Being torn from our families is painful, and being able to read a book with our children is one of the many things that we do for our children when we are home. But, when it comes to smaller children it’s even harder because we don’t know if they fully understand our intentions. We have to leave with them all of the good memories that we can afford in order to ensure that when we return, it is a warm welcome and not a cold shoulder. Many military parents will appreciate this book, as have the people who’ve read it and with the feedback I’ve obtained. But, we can’t do it without you!
I even got featured on the front page of the Stripes Japan:
There exists a demand for these types of books out there, but I feel as if publishers aren't willing to gamble on a niche market such as the military. This is why I need your support.
Other Ways You Can Help
I understand that some of you might not be able to contribute financially, and that is all right. But, I could still use your help and will appreciate it immensely. If you can make noise, raise awareness of this product and Indiegogo campaign then perhaps those who can afford to make contributions will start pitching some funds.
Believe me, the power of awareness is invaluable and, with your help, I know we can have a successful campaign. Let’s do it for those “military brats” we love and adore.
Risks and challenges
There are many obstacles in the way of a military man, but I will try to be as honest as possible.
Deployment is a very real possibility that might delay the release of the book. But, as a mature and well-prepared family man, I will ensure that my spouse has power of attorney to have the book published under my name. If this were to happen then the perks would be delayed for some time (not too long hopefully, but I can always send mail from the ship).
It’s going to take time and editing to finish the first renditions of the book once I do sign up with the publisher, but again it is nothing that can’t be handled with the many programs offered by these fine people.
The hard part was done. I found a very talented illustrator who gave me the commercial rights once the writing had been completed. I just need to have the physical copies available.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
