About this project

We've developed the BuzzBox, hardware and smartphone app, as an open platform for monitoring beehives. We're giving you tools for precision beekeeping, but we've also developed some powerful instruments for scientific research in the form of our hive health monitor.

Key Features

  • Honey Bee Health Monitor: automatic hive health updates via realtime colony audio analysis (details below)
  • Track your bees from your smartphone (Android and iOS)
  • Receive smartphone security alerts to prevent theft or invasion
  • Monitor internal and external temperature and humidity, barometric pressure
  • Solar powered and fully energy neutral
  • Weather-resistant enclosure for all shipped kits
  • Transmits data via WiFi (WiFi connection required for v1.0/GSM is in development for v2.0
  • Over-the-air updates for new, free product features

Open Source Beehives began with a vision of people who are separated by geographic distance, but who confront the same common problems, working together to cooperatively develop innovative solutions for everyone's benefit. Based on the success of projects like Arduino and Particle, we were inspired by the emerging potential for citizen-led scientific research and open data (CC0), owned by no one, but belonging to everyone, to give us all a straight answer when it comes to the crisis facing the honey bee.

We've gathered thousands of hours of beehive audio from all over the world to bring you the BuzzBox Hive Health Monitor. Our team of data scientists have built a system that can automatically tell you how your bees are doing based on input from the kit's microphone, and you'll get updates on your smart phone in real time.

We can currently track the following states:

  • Empty/Collapsed
  • Active/Normal
  • Pre-Swarm/Swarm
  • Missing Queen

Just like a Tesla, we can broadcast over-the-air product updates to the entire BuzzBox fleet, so as we get more data from you, we'll add new hive classifications.

The BuzzBox App is available for both Android and iOS. Developed by Stanfy, we're in active beta and are constantly adding new features based on feedback from beekeepers and our community. Check out the collaboration section below to tell us what you want to see!

Stay tuned as we add more hive states when the data comes back from the field:

  • Varroa Mites
  • Wax Moths
  • Pesticide Toxicity
  • More to come...

We're working with an accredited lab to gather data from 24 hives exposed to a variety of pesticides. We sincerely hope that bees exposed to pesticides emit a unique audio signal that we can detect. The results will start to come through at the beginning of August, 2017, and if they're positive, we'll begin adding pesticide-detecting features to the BuzzBox. Imagine receiving immediate warning when your bees face toxicity sickness. This line of thought opens up a variety of exciting possibilities, so watch this space for updates.

The heart of the project is our beehive audio classification system. Using a growing database of beehive audio and metadata, we've added a hive health monitor to the BuzzBox app so you know what your bees are doing in real time. For more information, check out the Open Source Beehives documentation.

Here's a brief overview of how this works:

We're gathering data from around the world and partnering with accredited research labs to bring you open data on the causes of bee population decline. As we learn more, the BuzzBox will be automatically updated with more accurate hive health reports. Your contribution makes this possible, and we greatly appreciate your support. Your contribution will fund:

  • Data gathering and analysis
  • New hive health monitoring states for the BuzzBox
  • An open data portal for all hive data

The BuzzBox sensor kit comes with the following:

  • 2w solar panel, battery, and charge control circuitry
  • Hive probe with microphone, temperature, and humidity sensors
  • Ambient temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure sensors
  • Accelerometer-based anti-theft device
  • Weather resistant enclosure (prototype shown has less weather resistant functionality than the final kits will)

Born in the Fab Lab, the Colorado Top Bar is our custom beehive made from FSC-certified Birch and sealed with a food-grade, non-toxic Hive Seal. We're offering these beehives in both the US and the EU.

  • FSC-certified wood
  • Food-grade sealer
  • Locally made
  • Open source design

Designed by our parent company, AKER, the Pollinator Haven is a versatile planter and pollinator seed mix combo pack that can be mounted to your wall, railing, or open floor space. Made from FSC-certified Birch and sealed with food-grade, non-toxic Hive Seal, your bee sanctuary will keep your bees happy for years to come.

This is an open source project, and we welcome you to join our development community. During this campaign, we'll be hard at work getting the word out, but we want to hear from you: what are you interested in doing, what ideas are you proposing, etc. Post in this forum thread, and we'll follow up as soon as possible to get you onboarded with the team.

Open Source Beehives was founded in 2013 to create a movement to use open source technology and citizen science to help the honeybee, and to create precision tools to help us become greater stewards of our beehives. We were founded as a partnership between Fab Lab Barcelona and our core team in Denver, Colorado.

We want to send a special thank you to everyone that believed in this project and supported us over the years:

  • Cormac Farrell
  • Our IndieGoGo Community
  • The Shuttleworth Foundation
  • Catherine Jaffey
  • Andre Houssney
  • Seneca Kristjonsdottir

Risks and challenges

Well, our highest hopes for the project are to deliver you a product that gives you immediate warning when your bees are exposed to pesticides, so you can intervene and help save your colony. To do this, we've partnered with a lab running a controlled experiment using sublethal doses of toxins, and our first round of data will come through at the beginning of August. We'll know soon after if we can uniquely identify this hive state just through the audio signal alone. We hope we can, but we won't know for sure until then, so this is one of our big challenges.

The other main thing this project needs is more data, so we can constantly improve the precision of our classification system. We've begun tracking Apis mellifera, but we'd also love to offer the capacity to identify unique data for all of the seven to twelve major species of honey bee in the world today. We need your help gathering this data, so please see the "Collaborate" section above to get involved. And, as always, all of our data and technology is open source, now and forever a part of the public domain.

The BuzzBox can be updated with over-the-air updates, just like a Tesla, so as we get more data, we'll update the fleet of kits uniformly. You'll be receiving upgrades for the life of the project.

We've run two other crowdfunding campaigns and know the territory well, so ability to project timelines and fulfill perks is pretty well established, although we have to mention that unknown unknowns are always a factor. We'll do our best to communicate with you openly and accurately, and we'll do everything we can to ensure we're all up and running as a global network in advance of Spring in the North in 2018.
