What is One Act Play?
Every year in Texas since 1927, thousands of high school theatre departments compete in One Act Play (OAP), the world’s largest play festival of its kind. Months of intense preparation lead to a succession of four sudden death competitions governed by a strict rule book - the two best troupes move on and the rest go home, the stakes raising with each round until the state championship in Austin. Among many other rules, no play can go over forty minutes, and each school gets seven minutes to construct and take down their set at any given competition.
The Show Must Go On presents an inside look at the drama that unfolds between high school theatre directors and their ensembles as they travel across Texas for this elimination style tournament. We are following several schools through the auditions, rehearsals, and competitions that make up a season of OAP.
Why we need your help.
Up until now we have been able to cover all aspects of the film as a two man crew. Now the competition is picking up and as several contests happen successively across the state we must get more crew to capture everything. THIS IS WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP! The donations received here will allow us to get the best crews available to finish production. We will be doing a lot of traveling as well as renting lots of high end production tools to help make the production look super pro. We only get one shot at capturing this year's competition so your donations will ensure that it all gets covered!
What received funds will go toward:
- Camera operators
- Sound Mixers
- Location permits
At the end of May we will start editing the film, and any remaining funds from this campaign will go towards finishing that. The sooner we finish the faster we can get the movie to you and start submitting to film festivals!
We've got some really cool stuff to give for our potential donors.
If you love our project and absolutely need to see this film to live a fulfilled life, help us make sure it gets finished and pre-order a copy by donating $20 for a digital download or $30 for a DVD.
For $10 you get one of these limited edition Show Must Go On highlighters. All you actors out there can use them to highlight your lines the next time you are cast in a play!
For $200 we are giving away four tickets to a local Austin theatre production. Go see a play at Hyde Park Theatre, courtesy of artistic director Ken Webster or check out a production by Capital T Theatre compliments of artistic director Mark Pickell.
Mark Pickell is currently a critic judge for the One Act Play contest. He also participated in OAP as an actor in high school, and won multiple state titles as a director before founding the award winning Capital T Theatre company in Austin, TX.
For $300 get one of these sweet miniature unit sets that all of the OAP directors use to design their sets for contest.
For those of you who choose to have us film a production, please contact us before donating. Unless the play you want recorded is in the public domain, we have to secure the rights to film the play first!
Risks and challenges
The challenge with making this film is capturing everything to make the story work. Since we have such a small window of time we have to get tons of coverage. Another issue is the distraction that our crews have been to these directors and actors as they prepare for the contests starting in March. Not only do they have to pass all their classes and learn lines. Now they have cameras in their faces all day. Let's help make it all worth it! Luckily the drama of this film is inherent in the subject matter and our subjects have had no trouble showing their true selves and focusing on the goals at hand.
The most difficult thing by far has been establishing a strong network and getting the word out to everyone we know will want to see the film. Please help us spread the word and remember every little bit helps!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
