The universe works in mysterious ways, and the crossing paths of Ben Wallace and Joe Stevens is no exception. Join the family of folks who are supporting their effort to release Ben's first album!
Bennett, 19, who came out as trans about a year ago, has been writing songs since the age of 12. His songs carry common human themes of love and heartbreak, youth and introspection, but more recently he has been writing about his experience of coping with the reality of the rocky, unpredictable, and often lonely road to transition and recovery. At 30, Joe, an out transman who began his transition eight years ago, has been performing with the indie-folk group Coyote Grace for the last six years, and started writing songs at about the same age for about the same reason. The two share a remarkably similar troubled past, and found a fast friendship which began with a healthy acceptance of their unique personal contexts that quickly snowballed into a creative forward momentum that has been a catalyst for their growth as musicians and as people. The resulting project - "Real Boy vol 1" - has been a labor of love and inspiration that captures not only one boy's journey to manifest himself, but also the ways in which communities rise up and take care of their own.
This project was done in partnership with the Second Story Arts Collective in Sacramento, a small community of working artists who produce shows and provide services to artistic contemporaries and up-and-comers. It is also the home of Dirty Hippie Feet, a design etc company that has produced album art, websites, promotional materials and merch for independent musicians and artists of other mediums. "Real Boy vol 1" was recorded in the famous "second story" with its creaky attic floors, circling ice cream trucks, and talkative neighborly dogs, while Ben was working as an intern for the collective over the sweltering summer of 2012. The summer proved far more fruitful than anyone was anticipating, and we would love to share our work with you!
Risks and challenges
We are currently collecting unique T shirts and patches and getting them ready for screen printing, we are also coming down the homestretch in the mixing process and coming up to our mastering appointment in Seattle next month. The artwork is coming along, and will be formatted in time for our December 1st deadline to have the entire project sent in to be pressed and duplicated. There is a two week turn around time, and then the new CDs arrive in the mail! We will have all of our physical prizes ready to go out by January 1st.
The personalized songs will be co-written by Ben and Joe after we have talked to YOU about your story/topic, and we will schedule the house concerts with YOU at a time that works for everyone.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
