About

GOAL OF PROJECT:

Secure $7500 in 30 days to make an impact in the work of prevention of lethal school violence in 3 areas:

1) $2500 towards sponsoring an amazing school shooting survivor, Missy Jenkins Smith, to co-present at a conference. She wrote the book, I Choose to be Happy, and survived the 1997 Heath High School shooting in West Paducah, Kentucky.
2) $2500 towards finishing the book, Ending School Shootings, that adds to the scholarship on how to prevent lethal school violence.
3) $2500 towards going to Colorado to (a) give 100 copies of the book, no royalty, to the school district where a school shooting occurred in Dec. 2013. Also, on this trip, I would like to visit the family of a young lady who died and give their foundation 10 copies of the book and a framed certificate recognizing those who helped this Kickstarter Campaign. An FAQ will provide more details if these are requested.

BACKGROUND

18 months ago, a school shooting happened in Colorado and I thought to myself for the last time, "Somebody needs to do something about this."

In short, I began and finished the book, Ending School Shootings, which uses a strengths-based approach to work with distressed youth. This portable set of strategies is good not only for students who may engage in self-harm or harm of other students, but also who are just disengaged and need their hope restored.

Imagine your top three strengths in life. What are they? When did you learn them? How are they impacting you now? Imagine if struggling students - whether traumatized, bullying others, or being bullied - imagine them being helped by knowing their strengths in life. Further, imagine a leadership team in each school that helps all distressed students to find their strengths and then supports these students so they can be impacted by their own capabilities and potential. That's what the strengths-based approach for distressed students is all about.

As a result of my book project, I have two results to share already.

First, I keynoted a school violence prevention conference last month at Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut, just 25 minutes from the location of the former Sandy Hook Elementary School. What an honor it was to share the strengths-based approach with educators, mental health professionals, and law enforcement.

Second, I wrote a bill in Massachusetts that aims to test the strengths based approach. Are you interested in writing a letter of support? If so, check the website link for the bill and send me an email.

I want to keep the ball rolling. Here are my three products to be completed within the next six months, with your help! Thank you in advance!!!

Kickstarter Goal (and three steps): $7500

1) Get Missy Jenkins Smith (school shooting survivor, 1997, that I have written with on the Huffington Post) to join me at the National Behavior Intervention Team Association conference in San Antonio in November 2015 (I am already sponsored as one of the Institute Faculty. For her: $1,500 flight, hotel, food, $1,000 honorarium for her time). $2500 total

2) Funding for the book. I’m paying for it currently and publishing it myself on Amazon this summer. If I am in the red for the book, it is hard to put traction on building strengths based supports for students. (book project budget: $2,250 plus website costs, $250). $2500 total.

3) There is a foundation in Colorado in honor of a young lady that died as a result of a school shooting. I’d like to go to Colorado and present the family’s foundation with a 10 copies of the book. Also, while in Colorado, I would like to visit the school district and give 100 books for their secondary level teachers. Book cost will be about $5.50 each. (budget ($1200 for flight and hotel, $700 for wholesale books and cost to ship). Total: $1900

Rewards

Anyone who gives $50 or more will get a signed Ending School Shootings book in return. Any who gives $150 will get both a signed Ending School Shootings book and an I Choose to be Happy book in return. Up to 80 potential $50+ backers are anticipated. Rewards of $25 or $35, respectively, will be provided an emailed or mailed certificate which is a copy of what the school district and foundation will receive.

Summary, Totals

  • $2,500 (Missy Jenkins Smith speaking and honorarium)
  • $2,500 (Book project, publication date August 15, 2015)
  • $1,900 (Colorado visit and books)
  • $600 Total book rewards includes shipping. (Anticipated rewards for 80 backers of $50 or more).

TOTAL PROJECT COST: $7,500

Happy 4th of July to all Supporters.
Remember, "Be a Part of the Solution."

Risks and challenges

Risks
1) If not enough funds are given, Missy Jenkins Smith will not present at the NaBITA conference in San Antonio in November 2015. There is no way to recoup this loss if the Kickstarter does not succeed.
2) No risks with the book. It's publication date is August 15, 2015. Amazon has assured of this.
3) The only risk of giving the book to a foundation or to a school district is that they disregard it. To deal with this risk, if the Kickstarter is funded, I will coordinate with a deputy superintendent there who is in my network for training of district staff. To do this, I will arrange a time for me to train either district administration or even a group of teacher-leaders while i am in Colorado in Fall 2015.

Challenges
There is only one challenge and that is getting educators to deeply understand and be able to help students realize their strengths, especially distressed students. To help with this, I will be providing hands on training while I in Colorado, as described above.

On a more national front, I am also soliciting national leaders around the country in the aid of getting the strengths-based bullying prevention bill in Massachusetts passed. This would be an opportunity to get build and deepen the evidence base around using strengths with distressed students. One of the thought partners in my court is Dr. Bill Pollack, who wrote the series of books, Real Boys. Lastly, to build more awareness for this work, I will also keep writing articles that explain how schools and districts can use strengths to help distressed students.

There are no other challenges.
Thank you, in advance, for your support!
