About

We 2 R Poets : A Literacy Initiative For Wake County Schools

A Regal House Initiative Project in conjunction with Fitzroy Books

The senior editorial team from Fitzroy Books and Regal House Publishing will visit eight Wake County elementary schools to conduct a poetry workshop for the fourth grade classes. At the conclusion of the workshop, we will invite the children to submit  poems of their own composition for publication. Our imprint, Fitzroy  Books (which publishes children's books as well as middle-grade and  young adult fiction) will then publish the poetry collection of  the children's submitted poems. A copy of the We 2 R Poets publication will be donated to each participating school library so that the children can enjoy the pride of  seeing their own original compositions in a professional publication.

About Us

Fitzroy Books, like its parent publisher Regal House Publishing, is dedicated to producing quality literature for children and young adults. We want children to not just enjoy reading, but to develop a passion for it.

Even as the world around them grows faster, smarter, and more efficient, children grow to match their environment. Literacy is a fundamental building block to ensure every child has the knowledge and skill to navigate new situations, opportunities, and challenges along their path to success.

The Poetry Initiative

Poetry has a mixed reputation in the literary world. Many adults think back to high school tests on Shakespeare and Wordsworth, and dismiss this genre as too archaic, too formal, too convoluted to be of any practical use to their children. Others think of Dr. Seuss and Mother Goose, and wonder how sing-song, nonsense nursery rhymes can possibly help a child become a more confident, fluid reader and writer.

Overall, it might seem odd and frustrating to think of poetry as the specific avenue through which to lead children to become successful writers and readers.

Poetry as a Building Block

Involving young children in poetry lays several strong literary foundations that they can build upon as they grow older:

  • Increased vocabulary (poetry often uses vivid descriptive words and images)
  • Reading comprehension (some poems aren’t as straightforward as prose writing, so      children learn how to use context and ask questions to understand what      they read)
  • Exposure to varied literary styles (from nursery rhymes to limericks to song lyrics to narrative ballads, poetry doesn’t just fit into one tiny box)

Poetry as Self-Expression, Discovery, and Motivation

Along with the educational benefits, poetry offers solid mental, emotional, and psychological rewards for growing writers.

  • Many children love to tell stories and describe the world around them—if they learn how to write about it, they grow more confident and skilled as writers and as young people
  • Innovation and creativity are key aspects of poetry—young poets, especially, find it      very rewarding to learn how to “break the rules” of writing and language by playing with poetic craft and structure
  • Any writer can tell you that seeing your work in print is a huge self-esteem builder—we want children to know that becoming better writers can lead to opportunities and outlets for creativity and hard work

The Regal House Initiative's We 2 R Poets Program

The team at The Regal House Initiative feel strongly that by encouraging children to find joy and merit in poetry, we are sharing with them one of the keys to learning and achieving whatever goals they set for themselves:

You can work hard, have fun, learn new things, and be creative—ALL AT THE SAME TIME!

Leading young writers and readers through the WE 2 R POETS workshop, we will teach them some of the basic craft elements of poetry, show them how to use their environments and experiences for creative writing assignments, and prove that working together with friends can be one of the most fun ways to learn.

Program Outline

This is a loose description of the proposed workshop activities—run time roughly 1 hour

  • Greet the students, introduce the Fitzroy team, broad description of writing and publishing (5-7 minutes)
  • Ask about students' familiarity with poetry, examples of poems or poets [Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, The Night Before Christmas, etc] (2-3 minutes)
  • Ask if students know what makes a poem—talk about elements of poetic craft like line, stanza, rhyme (5-10 minutes)
  • Talk about different kinds of poems and topics—happy poems, sad poems, silly      poems, nature poems, etc., with one or two short examples of each (5 minutes)
  • Lead students through a limerick with audience participation (5 minutes)
  • Talk about poetry as a way to practice good reading and writing (2 minutes)
  • Pass out handout with prompt list and blank lines for practice (3 minutes)
  • Allow students time to practice writing a couplet, quatrain, or limerick (10 minutes)
  • Invite students to share their poetry [perhaps talk about reciting poetry as public speaking practice] (5-10 minutes)
  • Pass out handout with prompt list and blank lines for submission to Regal  anthology, thank students for participating (3-5 minutes)

Regal House Initiative's Previous Projects

The Regal House Initiative has completed a number of anthology-based projects that serve to provide a broad platform for social issues and provide additional revenue to reputable nonprofits seeking to address these issues. Our anthology series are designed to spark conversation,  promote awareness, and generate funds for groups striving to improve our  society.

Our Speak and Speak Again anthology addresses issues such as immigration, racism, discrimination, LGBTQIA concerns, and women's rights. All net proceeds from the sale of this anthology are donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center to help fund their battle against discrimination.

Our Howling Up to the Sky anthology, the second in our series, contains a multiplicity of voices that speak to the devastation of the opioid epidemic. We are proud, through the sale of this anthology, to support  the fine work of Shatterproof in assisting families and individuals struggling with opioid addiction.

Our We Refugees anthology consists of writing by and about refugees, asylum seekers, and  other forced migrants. We Refugees is intended to amplify the  voices of displaced people and bring their experiences to the awareness  of readers. All net proceeds from the sale of this anthology support the work of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

Risks and challenges

There are logistical challenges inherent in this project. We will be conducting the workshop for fourth graders within eight Wake County schools on specific days in the spring of 2019. This will require our senior editor, Michelle Rosquillo to drive two hours from Greensboro where she teaches at UNC Greensboro. As well as time spent preparing for, and conducting, the workshop, this project will also require the additional costs of submission management, editing, typesetting, proofing, and print and ebook publication. With the funds sought for this project, we will be able to pay for the travel costs of our staff, and cover the costs of publication.
