#GamerGate: How Hate Tarnished A Movement and Gamer Image
An exposé book on what the twitter phenomenon, #GamerGate, is, how hate affected the movement, and how it tarnished gamer image.
TL;DR (Too Long; Didn't Read) Version: This Kickstarter is to help publication of a book based on GamerGate, what it is, how hate hijacked its message, and how this affected gamer image.
(Long Version) When you hear the word "gamer," what comes to mind? Is it the image of a young child playing on his father's lap? A family playing Wii Sports?
Or is the first image which pops into your head one of an overweight, pimple-faced, middle aged man with glasses, still living in their parents basement?
For many, it was the latter image that they associated with being a gamer, but over time that view was changing.
More recently, the view of a gamer has been one of a diverse group of people from all ages, races, and walks of life who enjoy a similar hobby. The change in perception was in no small part due to our strong community on and offline.
However, an event known as GamerGate is still ongoing, which has caused perception of our community to dip back to the narrow-minded view of years ago. The perpetrators are a small minority spreading hate on the back of a laudable ideal.
GamerGate is an internet movement, mainly taking place on social media, over the issue of ethics in gaming journalism. GamerGate has gained national attention and coverage on many mainstream news outlets due to the actions of the outspoken minority mentioned previously.
This book is based on the events surrounding GamerGate and broken up into four main points, with room for extras if desired:
- Explain the true message behind GamerGate and clear the confusion surrounding it due to misinformation by mainstream media.
- Show what a vocal minority did when they hijacked GamerGate to harass women in the industry.
- Examine how this has affected the image of gamers across the globe, and,
- Theorize how those who support the true cause of GamerGate can move forward to affect true change for their movement.
The hope is that this book will illuminate the overall GamerGate phenomenon and clear the misconceptions which have occurred on both sides of the debate.
The name of this Kickstarter is not the final name for the book, and the pictures shown are not related to the final cover. There will be a chance to vote on the final name and cover after the Kickstarter is complete if you select the appropriate reward tier.
The book will be available for sale in three ways:
- iUniverse Publication - Paperback: 5" x 8", white paper
- CreateSpace Publication - Paperback 5" x 8", white paper
- Amazon KDP - Ebook for Kindle (Available in other formats (EPub, PDF, etc) with rewards on the right, but only for sale on Kindle after publication)
(iUniverse is to bring the book to store shelves (http://www.iuniverse.com/Packages/), CreateSpace is print on demand for Amazon Sites.)
Projected length is to be 30000 - 50000 words+ depending on interviews and how in-depth I want to take it.
The money will be used as follows: $4000 will be used with iUniverse to bring the book to store shelves through one of their publishing packages. I am leaning towards the Indigo Chapters Bookstore Signing package at $3999, http://www.iuniverse.com/Packages/ChaptersBookstoreSigning.aspx, to have guaranteed shelf space for a period of time$4000 will be used for editing, as we all have issues with grammar :p ,and perhaps consultation fees as this is my first non-fiction book. The remaining $2000 is to cover any unforeseen costs and Kickstarter's fees.
Anything extra will go towards making the book better, or just finishing it faster than normal.
This Kickstarter has another purpose, and that is to gauge interest in the book itself. If not enough is donated, then I probably won't even end up publishing it on Amazon's free services (CreateSpace and KDP). If more than the goal is donated, then I will put that much more work into the book.
I believe together we can come together and bring awareness and understanding to others on what has gone on recently in the gaming community.
Thank-you for your donation!

Risks and challenges
As the book is currently a work in progress, due to this Kickstarter also working to gauge interest in the project, there is a lot left to do, and an abundance of research still needed, and (hopefully) interviews to provide a secondary voice.
Depending on the amount of research still needed (I've already done a lot, but there's so, so much more that I could look into), as well as the willingness of those I'd like to interview, it could take more time than projected to finish the book, thus the June 2015 timeframe.
This will also be my first time working with iUniverse, so the time for editorial feedback and getting the final product on the shelf is variable.
Another risk is, depending on the length, the cost of editing could increase as it is on a per-word basis. This is why a buffer of $2000 as mentioned above is necessary.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
