What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About this project

Hello there, have you ever wanted to dress up as your favorite character but don't have the time or money to make your outfit? Well now thanks to my traveling 3D printing service you'll be able to not only dress up as your favorite character but you'll have an outfit specifically fit to your form!

Who I am:

My name is Michael Shinton and I am a 3D designer that has been making props for cosplayers for a while now and during my down time I was making armor for myself, but I found it challenging and time consuming to constantly keep taking and retaking my own measurements, only the print the piece on to find that it doesn't fit properly. I told myself there has to be a better way. I was looking at 3D scanners but most were handheld and did not give a proper scan without the user having to apply dots to the subject.  Then I came across the Twindom full body 3D scanner which would allow me to scan myself and then build armor around my frame without having to worry about if it will fit or not.

The concept:

My plan is to travel to conventions (anime, comic cons, anthrocons you name it) have a booth set up where I will have the body scanner set up and ready to scan. I will then scan you for free and ask you what you would like me to make for you. From there I will design it and give you a price on what it will cost. and time it will take to make. I will also be selling other props and items while I'm there as well so I won't just be scanning people the whole time. My goal is to give you the props you have always wanted for an affordable price and without having to worry about making it yourself.

How does it work:

It's quite simple, all you will have to do is step into the scanner and make a pose that will allow me to properly build around the area that is needed and that's it! (i.e if you just need a vambrace and/or gauntlet made I would need you to pose with your arm out and fingers separated so I can build around with ease) For full body work I will have to ask that you strip down to your underwear before the scan so that I will be able to properly fully fit your body with the armor and/or gear of which you ask. Now don't worry though the 3D scanner will be walled so no one can see in or out and I will have a curtain on the main entrance that goes to the floor for full privacy, I will be the only seeing the scans and I will only be using them for making your form fit props and gear so no need to worry about your wandering around the internet. I am a designer I here to make things for you I am not here to judge you or body shame you.

What can be printed:

I will be able to fit form fit armor and props such as vambraces, chest plates, utility belts, gauntlets, wing structures, jewelry, weapons you name it. I will also be able to print you a true scale (1:1) mannequin of yourself if you wish in order to to sew, shape, and build around instead of having to constantly measure yourself. I am also available to be your dedicated 3D printer if you have designs but no access to a printer.

How reliable are the prints:

Everything I print is exactly like what you see. In the video above I show one of Bayonetta's guns from Bayonetta 2, and as you can see the body is beautiful and there are no blemishes or holes like you might find with resin casting. There was a seam because my printer is small so I made it in parts but I filled it in so you could not see it. Also you're probably wondering why they're white and not blue, that's because the girl I am making them for wanted to paint it herself. I will finish and paint the props if you wish, or if you want them in their raw form to finish and paint yourself you I will gladly send them that way.

What does it cost:

After the design is done I will price it based on what it costs to print. No scan fee and no shipping fee unless you want express shipping and even then I'll only charge half of what it will actually cost to do the express shipping. The main goal here is to give you props and satisfaction you deserve.

What will the money be use for:

All money that is pledged will be spent on the scanner, the Solidworks program, larger 3D printers, and to stock up on materials, as well as con fees so I get them all paid for ahead of time and give you a schedule on where I'll be. My 3D ptiner that I have only has a build space of  8.9" x 5.8" x 5.9" (227mm x 147mm x 150mm) which is not a lot of space. The machines I will be building will have a build space of 24" x 24" x 39" (609.6mm x 609.6mm x 1000mm) which will give me able room to work. If more money is pledged than my goal then the machines I build will increase their build space size to 36" x 36" x 59" (914.4mm x 914.4mm x 1500mm). If an extreme amount is pledged then I will build the previous machines plus I will begin my construction of my experimental machine that will be 48" x 48" x 72" (1.21m x 1.21m x 1.82m). Why is the last one experimental? Because it is a design I have been working on that will be able to print aluminum parts.

When can I receive my props:

With most I will design the part and wait till I return home to start the process, I will give you a time frame based on how long it will take to make as well as how long the estimated shipping will take based on your location. I will also be bringing printers with me so if it is a simpler design that I can get done within the time I am there at the con I will print and finish the part for you while I am there.

Can I have prints made for me outside of conventions:

The answer is yes I will be able to travel to your location outside of a convention, and/or event I might be at if you are comfortable with me coming to your home to do a scan or a print. If I already scanned you at a convention I will keep your file on hand so if you request new parts to be made I will easily be able to pull your file up and make new parts immediately without having to worry about doing another scan.

What is in store for the future:

Right now I can only work in plastics and some metals, in the future I plan to hire on a seamstress, a leather worker, and other designers to be able to create anything and everything form fit for you and also be able to travel more and travel further, as well as get a home base set up and a website.

Risks and challenges

The main risks and challenges are, the customer's comfortability with being scanned, the amount of money raised, and your patience. 3D prints take time, it took me 16 days of continuous printing to produce the guns for Bayonetta, but the more that is pledged will determine the amount of machines I can produce. The more I can print at one time reduces the time it takes to get you your props.
