Stretch goals added - see below
A poster comic that looks great on the wall... but is also a 14 page comic. Once folded and cut the poster becomes into a mini-book, and the story is transformed revealing a modified narrative!
An original and novel idea that brings the formal elements of comics center stage!
Hi, I'm Jim. I'm an artist, I make comics, and I also run a project called the Mobile Comics Factory (MCF). I love comics and zines, so I'm regularly trying to come up with new ways to engage young people in zine and comics culture.
I even gave a TEDx talk about the MCF project, and about why I think it is important for young people to draw:
In my work with children and teens over the past year I have developed a series of comic strips entitled Panel Discussion. These are short meta-textual pieces designed to teach the formal elements of comics through the narrative of the comic itself. I also really enjoy showing people how a simple sheet of paper can be turned into a book with just a few folds and cuts. Did you know that was possible? no glue or staples required! I love how this transforms how we relate to and understand the paper. We don't add or remove anything, it is simply reconstituted. See the video below for a demonstration of how this works (no that isn't the poster)
A poster that reads as a giant A3 comic strip. But there is a secret to this poster... By following the included instructions you can fold and cut your poster to turn it into a book! This will not only change the form of the comic but it will also change the story! Panels will be moved around, some may be hidden, new panels will now be visible that were on the back of the poster before. Now, as you read the book the story will still make sense! It will have changed, but it will still be coherent.
The finished product will be sent to you, but will also become a new resource for the mobile comics factory and allow me to improve the work I do with young people on the streets and in schools.
The Journey To Completion / How will my pledge be spent?
The time and restrictions of the MCF project do not give me the means to make this idea the best it can be within its framework. But you can help, with your pledge you give this idea not only funds to print it but a vote of confidence. We can make this happen. If I know there is an audience for this idea outside of the MCF then I'll know it's worth doing.
I have already created a non-narrative prototype that is functional and exists as a proof of concept. However creating a narrative work is much more complex and will take time and head-scratching. By funding this project through kickstarter I can establish a link with an audience for the project. Share my progress with you and we can enjoy the challenge together!
I will not be using any of the funds to pay myself or outside parties. 100% of funding will be put toward the materials, printing and distribution costs of the project and putting this poster in your hands! If the project takes off and we make much, much more money than expected, I will use those funds to invest in equipment to improve the project and higher quality printing. I'd also love to create some bonus rewards for you lovely ones.
New stretch goals
We've hit our goal so here's some stretch goals, help us reach them, by sharing the project on social media. These goals are in addition to what has already been offered and will not slow down the delivery of the rewards you've already pledged for.
If we hit £200 I will send you a new backer exclusive colour variant of my first poster comic "The Long Road" as a digital download. It will be interesting to see how much hasn't changed between then and now. All backers will also get access to a spotify playlist of tracks that reflect the themes of the comic/ I listened to while making it.
If we hit £250 I will produce an accompanying behind the scenes video about the making of the comic.
If something crazy happens overnights and we make £500 or more... then all backers receiving physical rewards will also get an exclusive newly designed vinyl sticker in their package as an additional thank you
And for every extra £50 raised above £500 I'll be sure to think of an extra perk to add, some physical some digital.
Risks and challenges
There is one challenge in this project that looms large, - maybe no one wants this comic! and this is the reason for coming to kickstarter. Creating this meta-comic in a way that looks aesthetically pleasing as a poster - but also still makes complete sense when turned into a book is going to take a lot of planning to get right. I feel I am most of the way there, but I cannot justifiably put the energy required to making it just right unless I know the outcome is going to be seen and enjoyed.
This is a passion project and so if funded, aside the risk of not completing by planned time (end of 2017) there is very little risk. The only delays that could happen would be about ensuring quality to the consumer and I will work very hard to make sure every backer is satisfied and feels they've contributed to something that could not have happened without them.
