The Story

The Other Son tells the story of Billy, a young man estranged from his family. Billy heads home one day after years away, hoping to make amends. But when he gets there, he discovers that he is too late: his family is dead. They’ve been murdered. He doesn’t know by whom, and he doesn’t know why, but he does know that he’s the only one left now to see things put right. It’s up to him to give his family the memorial they deserve.

The Project

This single-issue story was completed early last year. What we are raising funds for now is a large print run, so we can get this comic in the real, physical hands of people like you.

We did a small, proof-of-concept run of this project already, and it was beautiful. You should've seen it. You CAN see it! All you have to do is back us at the Barkeep level or higher, and we will put a physical copy of this beautiful, black and white story into your waiting hands.

The Creators

The Other Son was written by Anna Leue, co-founder of Constellation Comics and author of the sci-fi webcomic Half-Man, which has been running since 2014, and is in its fifth issue. The Other Son's stunning black-and-white art is drawn by Ron Joseph, known for IDW's adaptation of Nicholas Meyer’s Sherlock Holmes story The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, and for Rom: Revolution.

The Mini-Poster

The reward tiers are mostly pretty self explanatory. One neat thing that we're able to offer anyone supporting us at the gunslinger-level or above is a CHOICE between getting their mini-poster in color or B&W. Inks are by The Other Son's own Ron Joseph, and color is by the talented Angel Aviles A2. Aren't they both nice? I know some people hate choices, so for those of you who don't want to make up your own mind, I recommend the color. But for those of you who want to decide for yourself, here are the two options:

The End

Risks and challenges

Because we already did a small run, we've worked out a lot of the problems with printing already. Seriously, there were lots of problems, it was a mess. But we FIXED it, and now everything is awesome.

The only thing I can think of which could go wrong with the printing would be if something cropped up in the transition between digital and offset. We used a digital printer for the test run, since we only did a hundred, and we're planing on switching to offset for the bigger run, since it is both cheaper per copy and higher quality. The change could discover new problems that we aren't aware of yet. I don't really think it will...but it could.

Or we could get hit by a meteor? That would set us back for sure.

Seriously, guys, I'm scraping the barrel here trying to come up with risks. This is a super low-risk project. We have the finished book, we've already printed it once, all we need now is the money to do a bigger printing.

    Rancher

Just like a rancher, backers at this level...have a lot of cows? Cows are like...digital comics....because you can...herd them?

    Nope, I've got nothing.

At the Rancher level, you'll receive your very own digital copy of the comic, in handy PDF form. Which is great for reading on your tablet while out on the range, I guess.

    Barkeep

Ah, the barkeep, the backbone of the West. Has there ever been a western with a plot that would still function without the local barkeep?

Like the barkeep, this reward is the backbone of our Kickstarter. Back us at the Barkeep level, and you will receive a shiny new physical copy of the comic, hot of the presses. Well, okay, they will probably have cooled by the time they get to you. But they will still be hot, in the "damn, this comic is hot!" sort of way.

    Gunslinger

We made a mini-poster! I'm so excited. It's a 8.5 X 11 ORIGINAL image, not included in the book. And here's the really neat part: you get to choose if you want it in color or B&W. Both are pretty compelling in their own way. The B&W is more evocative of the flavor of the comic itself, but the color came out pretty amazing too. You can see both in the rewards section of the project description, to help you make up your mind. And of course, Gunslingers will also receive a print copy of the comic.

Oh, I forgot to compare this reward to its title. Um...gunslingers shoot guns, which use bullets, which are small, like mini-posters? Ugh, that's awful. Okay, gunslingers, like freelance artists, tend to work lots of short jobs with different people and get shot a lot...no, wait...

    Deputy

You get to be our deputy. And just like in a real western, all that means is that you get a pretty star badge and have to do extra work.

No, wait. What that *really* means here is that you get a special star badge on your copy of the comic (let's be real, it's a sticker), and a copy of the mini-poster, *plus* you get a bonus set of three print issues of Anna's webcomic, Half-Man. Bonus! That's way better then being a real deputy. And you probably won't even die first! (not a guarantee)

    Sheriff

A Sheriff makes it possible for a frontier town to exist. Without them everything would collapse into anarchy. We rely on our generous Executive Producer level backers to make it possible for our comics to exist, and not fall into chaos.

(Sheriff = Executive Producer. I got one to make sense!)

Sheriff-level backers will get Executive Producer credit on the book. That means your name on the credit page, next to the creators! (Obviously, only for this second printing, and all future printings. I can't go back in time and add you to the first tiny test run. Although, if you have a time machine I can borrow, I'm willing to give it a shot.)

Backers at this level will also receive a print copy of the comic and the mini-poster in their choice of color or B&W.
