About this project
London's first board game café.
Board game cafés are opening all over the world to cater to hungry gamers. Yet London is still bereft. We want to change that!
Our dream with Draughts is to create a hub for all things board gaming; playing, teaching and designing. It will be a haven for current board game players, as well as an active part of the community to spread the joy of board gaming to everyone.
We will have a team of experienced, knowledgeable and friendly staff to help customers select from a huge library of games that covers the walls. We will serve high quality food and snacks, and a range of local craft beers, ales, ciders and wines for all those late night sessions. We'll also host tournaments, themed evenings (like zombie games on Halloween) and design workshops (with professional board game designers there to teach).
There will be something for everyone at Draughts, so help us put board gaming on the map and make our dream a reality.
A board game café isn't quite like any regular café or bar. While it will serve coffee, food and beer, its main focus will be on the board games. And not just a couple of dusty games with pieces missing like you might find in your local pub, Draughts will have shelves upon shelves of well preserved classics and brand new creations for you to play for as long as you want for just £5 per person (no time limits, no game limits). Members will only pay £3.50.
The cover charge will also get you access to our amazing team of board game gurus who will use their intricate knowledge of our board game collection to advise you on what games to play and teach you how to play them.
Draughts will be open from around midday until late at night, serving food, coffee and alcohol. We will have a large rotating selection of beers, both bottled and (of course) draught. Whatever your mood, there will be a game and a drink to match it.
Loads of stuff! We want to have special one-off events throughout the year (Zombie games on Halloween, or a Love Letter tournament on Valentine's day). Here's a list of things we will be doing:
- Tournaments (with prizes),
- Free evenings (no cover charge),
- Game designer nights (test your latest prototype),
- Open evenings to help people find new groups to play with (or play a giant 20-man game of Werewolf),
- Board game design workshops (scroll down for more info!),
- Game launches,
- And even... speed dating evenings!
And of course every day we will be open for you, with experienced staff on hand to advise, teach and serve you as you explore our games library.
Draughts will also stock the latest and greatest board games for sale. So if our gurus have helped you discover a new favorite, you can take it straight home with you.
Draughts has been a long time in the making. Our premises have been found and inspected by building contractors, licenses have been applied for and received, suppliers have been found and orders made. We have already put a huge amount of work into the café, and we are determined to open in the Autumn of 2014.
That said we want to hit the ground running and that's where you, our supporters, come in. This Kickstarter campaign will help us make sure our shelves are stocked with that last unheard of title, let us add the final touches to the fitout of our premises, and of course allow our fans to show their support and create an initial membership base.
Draughts will be located in Haggerston, Hackney, E8. We have an amazing space underneath the railway arches on Acton Mews, 2 minutes' walk from Haggerston Overground station, and just a stone's throw from Regent's Canal.
The café will be designed to take advantage of the exposed brickwork of the walls and curved ceiling while providing the perfect environment and lighting for board gaming. Tables will be able to be moved around and combined to suit all sizes of groups.
As a board gaming hub, Draughts will pay special attention to the skills of game design.
Game design requires logical thinking, a good eye for graphic design, maths skills, good storytelling, and a knowledge of marketing and business. These are all key skills required in our modern world, but why learn them from textbooks? Draught Workshops will teach them in a fun, interactive way to adults and children.
We will be offering all physical rewards as add-ons, so if you want to get multiple rewards for family and friends, or you want to customize your order, you just have to over-pledge the amount for the items you want.
For example, if you wanted the Party Invite and a Board Game Tube Map, just pledge for the Party Invite (£50) and add the value for the Board Game Tube Map add-on (£20) for a total of £70.A huge thank you to everyone who pledges and shows their support for our project. We look forward to seeing you at Draughts soon!
Thanks for visiting our project, please take the time to spread the word!
