We've hit our goal! And now our stretch goal! Huge thanks to all of our backers!
Hi. This is Ben Kane, Grammy Award-winning mixer/engineer/producer, and lover of music and creating cool things. Drew Vogelman, who owned the original Garden Studio and Dessau Studios, and I are building a new studio, Electric Garden. We are building it from the ground up in an old building that used to house a bean sprout factory near the Williamsburg Bridge in Brooklyn.
A studio can be more than a place with cool equipment where noise is made. It can be a spiritual ground where musicians can connect to the deepest places within and beyond themselves. A place where they can be free to experiment and express themselves: an act that can access something transcendent, and ultimately create a thing of permanence (a recording) that in itself can spread that beautiful transcendence to those who listen to it.
With Electric Garden we are striving to build more than just a studio, but a community that will revitalize a creative movement dear to our hearts. With the current technological ease of home recording, many NYC studios have been closing. But it is essential that we still build and nurture these hallowed spaces that are designed specifically to facilitate the sacred creative process. Electric Garden will be a space that can serve this very important function. We need you to help us complete our vision.
This Kickstarter will allow you to buy HALF-PRICED STUDIO DAYS, signed D'Angelo vinyl pressings, tickets to private concerts, and so many other cool things to thank you for your contribution!
T-shirts, Hoodies, Art Prints and Mugs!!
We have some beautiful clothing for you guys. The T-shirts we are most excited about are our hand tie-dyed Electric Garden shirts.
High-quality American Apparel shirts in Men's and Women's styling with white lettering Tie dyed by our friend Viveca Hawkins at Tuff Puff on Haight Street in San Francisco. For the less adventurous, we also have the same shirts without the tie-dye as well as some great light weight Electric Garden sweatshirts. Choose wisely.
And everyone needs their own Electric Garden Mugs for your daily dose of caffeine!
Live Private Concerts at Electric Garden!
We are offering 4 amazing shows featuring artists we have worked with who will be performing in Electric Garden's live room. The vibe will be like catching your favorite artist in your buddy’s living room while you enjoy drinks and mingle with friends...but with way better sound and way cooler scenery. There is no stage or risers. These artists are going to be right in front of you playing their hearts out and partying right along with you.
- Due to artists’ touring schedules we cannot promise an exact performance date. The shows will be within a year of the studio’s opening. The goal is ASAP after we open!
- We will notify you at least one month in advance of these special shows, as the scheduling will depend on the artists’ schedules.

D’angelo and The Vanguard SIGNED Vinyl Test Pressing of Black Messiah
We are auctioning off a Black Messiah test pressing double vinyl set that has been signed by D’angelo. A test pressing is a completely impossible to buy rarity that is sent out to an album's engineers to verify that the vinyl master is perfect. The quality and EQ of these test pressings differs slightly as they were printed as one-offs for the engineer’s approval. D’angelo has signed this record making it a true collectors item!
- You can purchase this incentive outright (consider it a “buy it now” option) OR you can bid on it by emailing your name and bidding amount to firstname.lastname@example.org. We will repost this incentive with the highest winning bid in the final week before our Kickstarter ends for you to purchase via Kickstarter.
- See our continuous updates of the highest bid.
- This set of black messiah test pressings includes two 12” vinyls (Side A/B and Side C/D) with only one signed sleeve.
- There is no additional artwork or liner notes with these items, only the vinyl and sleeves that they were originally shipped in.
A personal audio gift from Ben Kane!
One of our incentives is an email from Ben Kane that is likely (knowing him) to contain a link to some of his mixes in audiophile-quality. (These are unmastered mixes that are 24 bit audio files—or 320kbs mp3s if that's how you roll).
Ben's a generous fellow and will most likely drop a ton of the funk on your ear buds with goodies that may not have been released from artists Ben's worked with. Cool projects that Ben has mixed relatively recently that he might drop upon your earbuds theoretically if he was trying to put together a cool gift for supporters could include: D’Angelo Live at Spotify Mixes, Emily King's The Switch, cool instrumental or live versions of things... Who knows!
Awesome Electric Garden Art Prints!
We are fortunate to have this custom Ebru artwork from the world renowned Danny Rodriguez (aka Danny Ebru) from Portland, Oregon. This art features the Electric Garden logo and is made using paint on top of water. Read more about it on Danny’s website here.
- These are limited edition prints of Danny’s custom Electric Garden piece.
- Each piece is a gallery quality 18” x 13.5” giclee print.
Mixing Workshop with Ben Kane
This is a one day intensive workshop with Ben Kane, where you’ll be able to learn the techniques that go into making great mixes.
- Will be limited to 10 people.
- These classes will be appropriate for students of all levels and will allow plenty of time to ask questions.
About Electric Garden:
We are turning this old bean sprout factory into something these little sprouts never saw coming.
It is going to be an extremely versatile recording space, more than capable of hosting a 12-piece band, and still intimate enough for recording a single vocalist.
The main studio will have a great live room, three isolation booths of varying size, and a very spacious control room.
We will also have a smaller B room with an iso-booth that can be used for video post-production or for music production and overdubs. Of course, the space also has a comfortable lounge, two bathrooms and two kitchenettes.
Electric Garden is building on the expansive gear collection of The Garden Studios. Detailed List here.
We have an SSL AWS Delta console with 24 motorized faders and expansion for up to 56 analog returns and onboard DAW control, as well as a loaded Protools rig with Burl clocking. We like to use this setup with our 2", 1/2”, and 1/4” Studer tape machines for that full-analog flavor!
On top of that we have a truly exhaustive selection of outboard preamps, EQs, compression and FX for every sonic color you can imagine (or haven't imagined yet).
We also have a very well rounded collection of familiar and esoteric microphones, and a serious stable of drums, keyboards, amplifiers, pedals and other fun toys and instruments.
Electric Garden is being designed with the same warmth, passion, and boundless creativity with which we approach music-making.
In order to encourage the creative flow of all the artists who pass through the space, we have sought to design a space that feels like no other, bringing in elements that have never been implemented in a recording studio setting before.
It's designed to be an otherworldly experience that will immediately take your mind away from the cacophony of New York.
I'll highlight some of the wonderful people and ideas that are guiding the design of Electric Garden:
Missy Ablin, an avant-garde design artist and architect, has been instrumental in designing this space. Here are some renderings she made during the creative process.
***Inspiration images for our process as seen in these photos and in photos in the video thanks to inspiration and images from: Yayoi Kusama (gobo), Michael Anderson (CNC), Uab Bonitum (CNC)
Ben Eiben of The Living Surface has teamed up with us to design and implement a beautiful living wall that will live and grow in the back of the control room. I always wanted more plants in the studio, and now there will be no shortage!
These living walls are like giant breathing paintings that evolve with time. They also make for great diffusers and absorbers for the acoustical heads out there. We're very excited about this feature!
Our friend Viveca Hawkins who runs Tuff Puff in San Francisco and is creating our T-shirt incentives is going to be hand dyeing the fabrics that adorn some of the studio walls. This will range from the more tame for our control room walls which will have a textured handmade effect from the custom dyeing to the more psychedelic designs.
Additionally, Danny Ebru who created the Electric Garden poster incentive will also be involved with fabric marbling and dyeing throughout the space.
Our friends Rukamathu. Smith, who run an architecture and design firm, are fabricating and designing giant carved wood art for our studio. These pieces will hang in the front of the control room and on a large wall in the live room.

Risks and challenges
This entire undertaking is a great challenge. From hiring the right contractor to finding the best way to affordably install super-quiet air conditioning, every turn of this project has been a challenge. But challenges are great things and there is always a risk of failure to every worthwhile effort!
We have the best team possible on our side (that includes you), all of the actual gear and nuts and bolts that will make up a world-class studio, and a bold vision that will lead us forward. With all of these elements behind us we are bound to conquer any challenges that come our way and succeed at reaching our goal of making Electric Garden everything that it can be!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
