WIFE is raising funds to create and premiere a new work
Enter the Cave
WIFE is embarking on the creation of a new evening length live performance. Loosely based on Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, Enter the Cave is a story of transformation and transcendence told through illusion. Utilizing dance, projection body-mapping, original costumes, sets, lighting design and musical score, Enter the Cave rearranges our notions of reality, space, and time. As three embodiments of one creature’s psychophysical state, WIFE manifests as a questioning of truth, a beckoning into darkness, and an offer to surrender to modern myth in its most irrational form.
WIFE harnesses her mystical powers to tell her story, using unnerving darkness and slowly seeping light, uncomfortable stillness and mechanized movements, alarming synchronicity and repetition that removes humanity, creating an otherworldly and impenetrable unity. WIFE conjures the first sounds ever uttered on earth, removing the mask of perception in a dizzying void. Flashes of optical illusions and iconographic images are created using lights, smoke, and animated projections mapped onto an elaborate set and the exquisitely costumed bodies of WIFE herself.

WIFE, A Trinity of Illusory Performance Makers, is an all sensory theatrical experience born of three Los Angeles based artists, Jasmine Albuquerque, Kristen Leahy, and Nina McNeely, who have been dancing together in art galleries, dingy nightclubs, and underground art happenings since 2005. WIFE began creating together in 2010 with Three Dots at Human Resources Gallery, their first experiment in coupling video projections and moving bodies.
WIFE is the amalgamation of choreographer and dancer Jasmine Albuquerque; choreographer, dancer, dance therapist, and teacher Kristen Leahy; and dancer, choreographer, animator, editor, projection mapper and illustrator Nina McNeely, converging in a single identity. WIFE is rooted in themes of mythology, iconography, and the dark side of the feminine, using confinement as a way to reinvent a choreographic language.
WIFE's work has been seen at live events all over America and Europe, from Istanbul Light Festival to Art Basel Miami and Frequency Festival UK. They have an ongoing collaboration with the band The Acid, and have been featured in their live performances as well as music videos. WIFE's "The Grey Ones" premiered at TEDx SoCal in 2011 and is included in Amon Tobin's box set DVD.
Risks and challenges
In order to create a immersive and visceral performance experience, WIFE utilizes video projections mapped onto bodies and set pieces without the use of mapping software or body tracking technology. This poses a challenge, as setting up for performances is time-consuming and dependent on many technical elements coming together with perfect precision. To tackle this challenge efficiently, WIFE has a skilled technical director who works with us from the pre-production phase throughout the rehearsal process and the run of the show to ensure that all technical aspects run smoothly.
Finding a non-traditional performance space where WIFE can create an immersive experience with large set pieces, lighting, and projections, as well as set up and rehearse with ample time to prepare the show also poses a challenge. WIFE is fortunate and honored to be presenting this new work in two very unique and hospitable environments.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
