Hi Everyone. I'm Kelly Lynn Daniels.
I play in the mud, clay to be exact. That's right, I'm a ceramic artist.
On March 6th I will fly to North Carolina to spend eight weeks working in the clay studios at Penland School of Crafts. I am extremely excited about this project! While at Penland I will spend my time intensely exploring new surface decoration techniques and firing methods. The processes I learn here will serve as a basis to inform a new body of work that I will create. Since graduating with my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics last may I haven't had my own studio to work in. In order for my skills to continue to grow I need to keep working at my craft. Penland will allow for focused time to develop a new body of work and and interact with fellow artists.
I need your help to get to the clay studios and to create my ceramic work. You can be the angels on whose wings I will fly to North Carolina. (I know it sounds kind of schmaltzy, but it’s true!) Your pledges of support will go directly towards my travel, clay, glazes, and kiln firing costs.
What Happens if I raise more than my funding goal?
Additionall funding will allow me to research the clay history and visit ceramic centers and studios in areas such as Seagrove, Raleigh, and Asheville. North Carolina has a rich ceramic heritage. It began with the abundant and diverse natural clay deposits first discovered by the Native Americans. When Immigrant potters arrived in the 1700's they also made excellent use of this resource. Also, extra pledges will help me to pay to ship my work back home. That is, after I donate some of it to Penland's awesome scholarship fund auction!

“So what’s the big deal?” you may be wondering. What is so special about this place that I am going to? For one, Penland is a truly unique place to work. This is an artist haven situated in a beautiful setting in the Appalachian mountains. The campus is isolated, with little to distract an artist’s focus. That is a very good thing! It is comprised of many different studios in a variety of media which will allow me to collaborate and network with other creative folk. This means that I will have a great opportunity to grow as an artist in a relatively short time. Second, I graduated last May and was awarded my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Great! But a little sad too. Like I mentioned above, since graduating I haven’t had a regular studio to work in. I’ve been a nomad relying on the generosity of fellow artists to borrow studio and kiln space and fire a few pieces here and there. This has been a bit limiting on my creative expression. Having a fully equipped studio at my disposal will make this project a reality.
$75 Reward Category-Red Vase
I feel very blessed to be able to go out to Penland. I have already been awarded an assistantship which means that I will be working from 24-40 hours a week in the clay studios. I will be doing things like making glazes, firing kilns, and helping the other artists. In exchange for this work I get to use the facilities and my studio fees, room and board are completely covered for the entire eight weeks. So, now I just need to get out there, buy my clay and get working! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping “Fly Me to Penland.”
