The Spencer Collection is our way to pay tribute to Brooklyn's dynamic and colorful past and present.
Brooklyn's rich industrial heritage is represented by simple and purpose oriented design while the beauty and elegance of its historical residential neighborhoods guided the selection of materials.
AS FEATURED ON
The collection is about creating a line of everyday carry accessories for men that is affordable without sacrificing the level of quality or sophistication. We also wanted to ensure that every piece and material is American made.
Our walnut lumber is supplied by a 200 year old company that was founded in 1812, in New York City. Our brass parts are sourced and machined by a family run company located just across the river in local New Jersey. And finally, our leathers are supplied by a Chicago based company that has represented the finest in quality since 1905.
The result is collection of items that are lasting and age beautifully, making for timeless objects that their owners will keep for the rest of their lives. Backing this project will not only bring it to life, but will help keep American supplying & manufacturing alive and well.
ALL PIECES ARE ALSO AVAILABLE IN BLACK
Our campaign is ending right before Father's Day, and any piece of the Spencer Collection would make for a great gift. While we cannot speed up production in time, we can provide a placeholder for the gift to come. To that end, we have decided to add a gift card option stating that your loved one will be one of the first to receive a piece of the Spencer Collection.
To Receive Our Father's Day Card:
- Add $2 to your existing pledge
- Send us your mailing address immediately
Unfortunately, due to time restrictions this option is available for domestic backers only. We will be sending these immediately per request, until the end of our campaign.
PROCESS & MATERIALS
The inspiration for Spencer Collection came from our surroundings. We have lived in Brooklyn for a decade now and always found this place very inspiring. Walnut and brass architectural details such as hand railing, street lights, doors and window shutters are such a huge part of Brooklyn's neighborhoods like Fort Greene or Boerum Hill. These historical elements affected our selection of materials.
At the same time we wanted each piece of the collection to have fresh character of the new and transforming Brooklyn. We chose to juxtapose classic materials with minimal, asymmetrical modern lines.
Traditional machining was for the most part replaced by modern fabrication methods. Quarter inch thick solid brass and premium quality walnut were first laser cut by local fabricators and then hand finished and assembled in our studio in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Brass pieces are hand brushed, one at a time, to guarantee unique and beautiful texture while walnut parts are stained and polished for rich depth of color. Every piece of Spencer Collection comes with a strap cut out of 4 ounce thick top-grain leather, finished with a brass rivet.
Each of the materials making up Spencer Collection carries an inherent variation in color and texture making every piece unique. Over time they will develop rich, burnished patina giving them even more character.
ABOUT DESIGN UNSANCTIONED
Design Unsanctioned launched almost one year ago with a goal of producing well designed, locally crafted high quality products. It was started by industrial designer Konrad Giersz, Polish transplant who moved to United States ten years ago and Brittany Dolence, art director, Ohio native and a Brooklynite for the past eleven years. Together they set to explore collisions between traditional materials, craftsmanship, functionality and progressive, modern technology.
Konrad is the guy who brings product design and production experience to the table. Having worked with companies such as Fisher-Price, K'Nex, Snapple, Dr.Pepper, Pepsi and many more he possesses knowledge necessary for developing and producing goods either abroad or locally.
Brittany's understated sense of aesthetic is what makes Design Unsanctioned so appealing. She is the person running everything from behind the scenes, from photography to packaging. Through working with brands such as Brooks Brothers, Free People, Anthropology, Bloomingdales and Nordstrom she has developed an impeccable sense for branding and art direction.

Risks and challenges
As with production of any type of goods there is always a chance of different kinds of problems. Fortunately producing goods in collaboration with local fabricators makes things much easier. By dealing with local people communication is much better and any problems can be addressed quicker.
We have done everything we could to cover all our bases and prepare for producing Spencer Collection. The designs were tested, production samples look great and all the materials are sourced. Still, as with anything else, if there is an opportunity for a problem, than there is a good chance that something will come around. The key is to anticipate and be prepared.
The main problems that we are anticipating are delays. Possible delays include:
-delays in delivery of raw materials
-delays in delivery of fabricated parts
Another problem that we could experience (and are actually hoping for) is that you guys fall in love with Spencer Collection the demand for it is overwhelming. We are a small company and are finishing all parts by hand in our studio. We do so to guarantee a high level of final product but in case that happens we will do everything in our power to meet our delivery dates.
IF ANY DELAYS DO HAPPEN WE WILL INFORM ALL OUR BACKERS AND ADDRESS ALL CONCERNS INDIVIDUALLY.
We want you to be updated on progress of Spencer Collection from the beginning of this campaign all the way to the delivery of each piece to your doorstep. If you ever have any concerns or questions please contact us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
